In this latest walk and talk I take the Garmin inReach messenger on a 32 mile walk in Northumberland taking in Rothbury - Thropton - Alnham - Ingram - Fawdon - Little Ryle - Lorbottle - Cartington - Rothbury
This two-way satellite communicator from Garmin is a great piece of kit, but let’s see how it performs in the hills.

Thank you, think I will upgrade to this from my Spot 3, really like the two way messaging on this and the battery life just leaves the Zoleo in the dust!

That's a big walk John, not counting the video walk shots! Thanks for the showcase. I think this confirms the mini 2 is the one for me. Are they facilitating the messenger app with the mini 2 yet? Greetings from Holywell, Northumberland .

Yes, the messenger app is now able to also be used next to the Garmin inReach mini 2, as of last week.

Very impressed by your review of this device. I am considering getting one purely from the safety factor - I enjoy walking solo but I am now getting to my late 70’s and my wife needs the reassurance that I can remain in contact when out of cellphone signal (say on the fell tops) if the need for assistance should arise. Would you recommend this device? I used to work overseas when younger and always carried a satellite phone, so I know how useful they can be…

I am wondering about the interaction with Fenix 7; is the inReach shortcut activated on Fenix, so then I can send a message directly from the watch (in case of emergency)?

You can sent your preset messages and activate the SOS from a Fenix watch, you also can read your messages on the watch also. I hope this helps.

This device would work in movement? For Say that im traveling in a car, and with no Mobile service i try to send a message it would work? Or the device needs to be static?

If you already have a GPS for navigation i.e. you are only using it for two way satellite communication, I personally would go for the Zoleo - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cKZ7BMYBWNo.html

How does the recipient receive the message? Does it come through as an SMS, an email, or do they have to also download the messenger app?

The recipient can receive the message as a SMS or email, but with the Garmin Messenger you can not reply to the text, the recipient has to download the messenger app and reply in that way. I hope this helps.

@@ukgpstraining Thank you. I guess I wanted to make things as foolproof for the (elderly) recipient as much as possible. Perhaps I should go for the inReach Mini 2 in that case.

@@busload_uk If you are wanting fool proof I would encourage you to look at the Zoleo, as this does come from a 'fixed mobile number' that the person can just text back to. I hope this helps.

I know you can’t navigate with it, but can you see your location on a map with only satellite coverage?

No you can't see your location from this device on a map, you can on the Explore App (on your phone) but it uses your phone GPS to get your position fix.

I have a Hint for your next Screenrecording on the Phone: You can enable "Show Touches" For Iphone: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-K9S6DUYmwmM.html For Android: For this you need to activate "Developer Options". 1. Go to Settings "About Phone" / "System" 2. Click 7-10 Times on "Build-Number" There Apears a Message "Your are now a developer" 3. Go to "System" and "Developer Options" 4. Here you can activate "Show Touches" Your Welcome ;)
