Walk and travel with us from Plaça d'Espanya to La Rambla via Montjuïc Castle and gardens, Barcelona, Catalunya, Spain.
Me and my mum started walking from the beautiful square Plaça d'Espanya up to the magnificent Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC).
The museum has a very extensive collection of Romanesque art that is considered to be one of the most comprehensive in the world. Furthermore, the museum houses a Gothic collection as well as works from the Baroque and the Renaissance. There is also a modern art department.
In front of the museum you will find Font Màgica, a magical fountain designed by the Catalan Carles Büigas for the 1929 World Fair.
In the evening the fountain is illuminated with beautiful colors.
The view from the top, in front of the museum is stunning.
After that we continued our walk to the Botanical Gardens of Monjuïc and The Olympic Stadium, which unfortunatly was closed at the time.
The stadium was built in 1929 by architect Pere Domènech i Roura.
A day later we continued our walk in Monjuïc and went to Monjuïc Castle. We got there by Telefèric de Monjuïc. From this cablecar you can see all of Barcelona.
The Castle of Montjuïc is a fortress on Montjuïc hill and played a role as a fortress in the history of the city, but especially as a prison.
They started building the fortress in the 17th century and during the Spanish War of Independence (1808-1814), the French take the fortress on March 12, 1808 and use it as a prison. After this war, Franco would still use it as a prison untill 1975.
The views from the fortress are also stunning and there are still many old cannons around the fort.
After this visit we go back to Plaça d'Catalunya and take a stroll around La Rambla and Barri Gothic Area.
