Came across Montmartre by chance wandering around Paris appx 40 years ago, never knew it was there until then. Immediately loved Montmartre. I live in Bristol UK. Thank you for reading this.

When I was little (child) and I didn't like a food during the meal, my mother often said to me: Well if you don't like that, just go to Chez Plumeau. My mother, my brother and I were all 3 born in Paris. It was a fairly common expression in the 70s in Paris and its suburbs.

MERCI .

Thank you for the walk-around. The city has relied heavily on the tourism trade for ages and interacts with the visitors mainly in the center city arrondissements along both sides directly on the Seine and then the ones featured here at the base and at the summit of Montmartre. The majority of the population lives outside those touristed areas and walk, drive, bus, or Metro to work daily. With the opening of Disney 4 decades ago, the city has expanded east and south outside the ring. It seems to me the people who immigrated from France's worldwide provinces in the 20th century have settled to the north and east sides of the city. Great areas for restaurants and cheaper shopping.

Anyone saying Paris is overrated should have a look at the hellhole where I live. Not every potential traveler asks for a fary tale, some of us will be content with not having raw sewage running down the streets. Parisian streets could use some more frequent sweeping, though...

That I can't tell, I'm afraid. I've never been to Europe. But even in the country where I live some cities I visited recently look washed compared to my memories, the main problem being there's a lot more people.

Spot on, Daniel. Paris is great. Yes there's a bit of litter here and there, but it's a big city where millions of people live and work. I think these people think everywhere should be like Disneyland or some other sanitized theme park that's been manicured to within an inch of its life.

Many things contributed to the decline of "well-dressed Parisians": 1) the replacement of the French franc by the Euro in the Eurozone in Y2K. French people had to give 7 French franc for 1 Euro. Many pensioners fell overning into poverty. So, less to buy made in France dress. 2) The dismantling of French dressmaking and spinning companies begun in the 1970s until complete annihilation to follow the specifications of the EU. In doing so, the equipment were shipped to cheaper workers countries like India, Thailand, Romania... China using less quality fabric, then finished products are returned to France. 3) The American/anglo-saxon casual dress code influence, tee-shirt, jeans, trainers, jogging, grunge, rap style, that is to permeate the whole world to distinguish two distinct classes, the affluent and the masses. 4) (Forced) Multiculturalism that is denting French culture. 5) The decline of standards, vertu and self-respect (who talks about vertu in these days of liberalism and feminism) 6) The demise of femininity in our era of equality with the men. I noticed more women wearing trousers on a daily basis. Moral of the above: you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Sooner or later, we must see the fruits of 40/30 years of relentless pounding on the culture. There were many beautiful boutiques selling very good quality clothes in every Paris districts, sometimes affordable, sometimes less affordable but we could all dress nicely. As for the Champs-Elysees back then, nothing to do with what I see now walking up and down this boulevard. There was no anglo-saxon chains, no Zara, H&M, no fast and cheap food, only quaint boutiques selling exclusivities. Speaking with salespeople on the Champs-Elysees and around that area, they only deplore its loss of authenticity stamp. When we would say, let's go to the Champs-Elysees, we took particular attention to our dress. As for French men, they used to be slick but because of the above mentioned points, they too have fallen by the wayside. Looking at how the younger generation dresses and see things, I cannot see how they can pick up the slack.
