It’s an amazing place to live, you can get everything you need, especially if you love crystals, colourful beautiful clothes, organic food, essential oils and hand-made arty things! Sooo much nicer than bland high streets that are the same from town to town across the country. I love it because you can wear cloaks and flower garlands, or fairy wings and Elven circlets, depending on your mood and no-one looks twice! It’s a welcoming and friendly community, full of hundreds of thousands of spiritual pilgrims each year and there’s loads to take part in every week if you’re spiritually inclined.

Superb - I go to Glastonbury every other year, we stay at the Isle of Avalon campsite but unable to visit this year due to COVID. Sadly two of its iconic shops - Gothic Image Books and Cat and Cauldron are no longer. Despite being pretty far removed from a new age/alternative mindset I've always appreciated the uniqueness of the town - one highlight was a punter performing an exorcism on himself in the George and Pilgrim.

I went into a local pub once during my first time in that town, i was much younger and remember in the pub there were men with horn hats and people dressed up as fairies, just having a few pints, it was so mystical and strange to me

Exactly, Peter! The supposed hippy generation are largely supporters of very low paid work in China and India. Much of their supposed mystical, 'free thinking', lifestyle is pseudo-middle class blinkers built on other countries' toil. Buy British.

Fascinating to compare the cornucopia of tat in Glastonbury to the solemn magnificence of Wells.

At the age of eight I purchased, for ten cents from my local library, a book called 'The Hidden Treasure of Glaston' by Eleanore Jewett. It was a lovely introduction to the history of Glastonbury and the stories of King Arthur. I've been fascinated by Glastonbury since then and hope someday to make a trip to the U.K. to see the Abbey, Weary-All Hill, Chalice Well, the Tor, and steep myself in that rich brew of history and mythology. Thanks for the video and please keep them coming!

What a curious and fascinating journey! What's great about Richard's video style is that he respectfully shares this directly to us, the "audience". Julia adds a wonderful, "impish" adventurous style, full of mythology to anywhere you both go.

There is a large hollow basement space under the Market Cross, we held an underground rave there in the 90,s you can access it via a door in Heaphy,s wine bar ( which was hilariously and briefly originally called Plonkers!) Till they twigged it was a naff name!

Suddenly, for 4 days, I couldn't get to you by scrolling back to here. YT kept failing after a couple of years. I was about to write and complain when I noticed that you had an option to start scrolling at the earliest. Scrolling back, I eventually found Tisbury Yew and thence to here. Incidentally, I had to scroll forward about 6 months from the top before I found you. Have you been killed off by YT or are you taking time off? See you tomorrow to see what follows Glastonbury High St. If I can find you.

I think I was last in Glastonbury in the summer of 1999 and apart from the names of some of the cafes, nothing seems to have changed much! A strange place, trying to cater for and make a living out out of a very select group of mysticism followers, who are not known for their big spending anyway. I think American tourists probably keep the place going ... Thank you both for this well considered introduction. I can't wait the the other videos, especially the Abbey and the Well.

Glastonbury appears to be the Hay-on-Wye of ‘touristy pagan ‘stuff’’. It strikes me that there is little for the local residents there. Great overview of the high street and some splendid architecture! I would like to have a stern talking to whoever approved that horrible building in the 1960s behind Julia’s head at 3:06 which is so out of keeping with the rest of the high street!

Ive never been to Glastonbury bvut it looks a charming high street that appears to cater for a festival that is held on just a couple of days a year, four years out of five, I do wonder how most of those shops survive, it cant be due to the local population can it, and hippies havent really been a big thing since the 70's have they? Im confused, is it all just for the tourists? Looking forward to your tour of the Abbey and the Tor.
@RichardVobes
@RichardVobes 6 лет назад
Thanks Sid - the Tor is tomorrow's video and Abbey after that. :)
@MrGreatplum
@MrGreatplum 6 лет назад
Sid Bonkers - I think it is all for the tourists - the festival on the farm is quite a way from the town so I don’t know how much impact that has on the town.

as a resident i don't know either, no locals ever go in them. but there is a large spike in tourism around the time of glastonbury festival

Loved the old stone building like the George & Pioneer & the church. It all kinda reminded me of Salem, Mass. How there are still all these old historical early 1700's buildings there, but it has become a bit of a theme park w/ the witchcraft, new age, palm readers, psychics, etc due to its history of the Salem Witch Trials.

Ah mystical Glastonbury, it was always considered a bit weird by us locals, because it had become very hippyish. That was back in the 70s & early 80s. To give you an example, there was a man who on a fairly regular basis would wander naked up the High Street . My sister, who lives just a couple of miles up the road tells me he doesn't do that any more, probably a bit old for that sort of thing now. She tells me there is a man who drags a large cross up the High Street, she says it's usually only at Easter, because that would be a bit weird otherwise ;-)

You didn't mention the strong smell of Cannabis amongst the layabouts near the church !. The place is full of nutters and drug takers, leading on the gullible day trippers. However Glastonbury is an interesting town to visit. A climb up the Tor is mandatory, and exploration of the levels is rewarding. Burrow Mump offers good views toward Glastonbury. The view from the top of the Mendips is even better, as it resembles an nice firm tit. Wells is a much nicer place, with some interesting walks, especially around the Bishops Palace.

On the whole, this is a pretty enjoyable video tour. However, and I know you knew there was one coming, your commentary is supposed to be cute and funny, however, it only comes across as mocking. If you don't have an appreciation for another's way of worship, don't mock it, try to learn about it instead of sounding like a smarmy smartass..... knick knack paddy whack..... what a stupid statement. I had no problem watching until then, at that point off went the audio.
