Walking and training with your dog is a great opportunity for bonding and teaching manners. David the Dog Trainer and the Danes work hard on work around strangers, dogs, and more!
I finally adopted a Dane :D! Unfortunately she is deaf, so her training has been a bit difficult. But, she is still doing really well, and I'm so proud of her.
We have a female Blue Merle named Willow, and we are in love with her. She’ll be 9 months old on January 13th and a year old on April 13th (we got her at 2-3 months old). She’s a bit difficult to train (super stubborn lol), but she’s a good girl overall.
I live in a rural area. I want my dogs to listen to me, but I don't want them to be robots. Let them run, have them cone when you ask. I'm so happy I need to put them on a leash so occasionally.
I have to say, your Danes are GORGEOUS!!! I love your Fawnequin! We used to have a Brindlequin. ;-) Both of your babies are gorgeous, and I love your training techniques. So nice to see someone train positively!
That was loads of help thanks David, I havent had a Dane for many yrs and just got a new one! Great reminders for me. 7 weeks and we are in amongst it!
when I was a kid 50 years ago, I recall these neighbor's down the road who had Great Danes. they would attach the leashes to the front bumper of the truck and drive slowly around the block ( large blocks)
Thank you. Should have watched this a long time ago. Have been walking my 2 danes together for the last 8 years and one is always faster than the other.
But they don't need this head shit!!!! A untrained chihuahua off leash is much more dangerous than a trained great Dane!! I'm owning dogs since I was a kid (BIG and little) so I know what I'm talking
Lots of different reasons WHY people would use clickers. Mostly = speed up training process in a lot of applications. Also, food-based training = faster training, especially for general obedience. IMO, the "dogs just want to please their humans" stance usually = more reliance on outdated methods, including dominance/hierarchy models and correction/compulsion styles. Anyhow, this is not really a forum for a lengthy debate. But, it's nice to get people talking, so thanks for participating.
Love your fawnequin ... don't see them very often (because they can't be show for conformation ... but they are gorgeous pets!). I've learned a lot from you. We have a 10 month old Black and he is well behaved but needs some fine tuning ... I do believe the clicker may be the answer because it is an IMMEDIATE response to the dogs behaviour while getting a treat takes a second or two. I had someone tell me you "load the clicker" so they associate the sound with a treat (repeating click/treat numerous times) then not as many treats are needed in the training process. Great video!
Mr. Hogan, you are a wonderful leader representative for these wonderful, and beautiful Danes! I am so glad that you posted a video of your techniques because the are identical to the techniques I have used on my past Rotties and now Wolf hybrid. It is extremely effective, positive training. Great job and I look forward to more of your videos. Please give Rocky and Augie a hug for me. I want to wrap my arms around both of them and squeeze!
Great job David!! It is so refreshing to find new and different techniques/words to use for training. Always appreciate seeing a fellow dog lover who takes the time invest in good training. I have a 15 yr old Shep/Boxer and it's so nice to hear nice comments on how well behaved she is....makes all those hours of training and bonding/play time well worth the effort.
Excellent video, David! I love your work with your Danes - they both seem like such nice, happy boys! I'm going to start working with my Dane using these ideas. He's pretty good on a leash but I'd like him to be better.
Your videos have been a godsend to me....I'm taking classes to get by dog trainer cert...I can only hope to be as good as you in my training...thx for the great info! You rock
This was an excellent video for what information I was seeking. Well, you could call it reassurance lol! I happen to be barely 5ft tall, and although I have experience leash/walk-training large dogs, Great Danes and other Mastiffs are a bit larger. I'm glad to see that handling of such big, beautiful dogs is the same as with any other sized dog.
I love, love, love your Great Danes, my husband and I will be getting our first Dane puppy this weekend and I am super happy!!!! He will be a harlequin. :D I have always had good luck training puppies with the face harness like you have. (not sure exactly what they are called) I am happy to see you use the same thing!! This video was so helpful.
I was given a harlequin Dane that had "lived on a chain since it was a puppy, the owner had no idea how to train it. It was out of control & had NO MANNERS. I had it for a half hour and it came, sat, healed, and went down on command. He was smart, he just needed someone as smart as he was. Dogs are like cloths. You don't ware a dress or suit when you go mountain climbing, and you don't get a any dog when you don't know what type of dog will fit in your lifestyle and expertise.
... "And I don't have a sled" Hahaha! We are getting a Great Dane in a few months and I'm doing all the research on training I can. Don't want to be suddenly pulled down and dragged on the sidewalk on my face!
Clicker training is great except when you have deaf/visually impaired Danes. We use sign and touch therapy and our non-Dane rescues (hearing and seeing) also know sign. It works for us but takes patience.
I am a part of the Human Deaf Community. The Deaf use lights or vibrations where Hearing prople would use sound. I recommend it in training your dog. Use a flashlight and snacks instead of a clicker.
I just watched a video of a guy using a shock collar on a Dane, I figured the Dane's movement were slow and hesitated for that reason, but I wanted to see how Dane's move generally(not knowing the breed too well). I'm happy this was the next video I watched.
Thank you thank you for showing me the danes. I have a dane and I need to train him. I used clicker training on my smaller dogs and it was extremely effective. Now I know that I can use the same approach with my Great Dane. What kind of treats are you using for them in this video?
I was here to gain insight to why people use clickers & treats. As I said David this question was not to mess with you, I really wanted to know. I still stand by dogs wanting to please you, but as with people some are just slower then other to understand what you want. Giving them heart felt praise gets results because they do just want to please you. I have had everything from mutts to double paperd dogs, house, game hunting, & flock & military guard dogs, All have had the same results.
i love your videos they have been such a huge help in training my dane how to behave properly! i do have one question though. when it's just me and him, he does beautifully, no barking or anything. when i take my other three dogs, they go balistic and get him excited as well, so its not enjoyable to take all my dogs for walks... what should i do? thank you again, i really do love your videos!
This is great. I am having trouble with my Dane. When we go to off leash parks, with people walking other dogs around he is great. No issues, follows us everywhere. But at home walking in the area, he get reactive to other dogs, pulls growls, and barks. We had issues with other people, and kids, but we mastered that part. He still has issues with other dogs....Any tips. Redirection doesn't help, or even treats, once he sees a dog from far, he goes for it.
Hey, I'd like to have some advice about adopting a Great Dane! I'm 16 and I live in a pretty big appartment (so no garden, unfortunatly) and both of my parents would love to adopt one too. The thing is that they're both working all day except on wednesday, friday afternoon, saturday and sunday. We had a conversation about adoption and they were afraid that the dog'd be lonely... I come home everyday for lunch (I've got a bit more than an hour break) so I told them I could take the dog out, and spend time with him/her during that time. Also I don't come home very late, because my school schedule is quite good. So do you think the dog'd be sad? Because that's really what matters to us... We want to adopt a dog if we're a 100% sure that he/she 's gonna be happy with us! thanks a lot!
Are you sure those does aren't slowing down from all of the food you gave them? :) Just kidding.. my friend has two and they're out of control at times. Thanks For The Video!
My husband and I are looking at adopting our first Great Dane female 11 month old this next week. However, from what I have learned from the family that is fostering her is that she seriously lacks in socialization!! I have a 15 month old blind shih tzu. How would we go about introducing one to the other without there being any altercation? She will be meeting with a trainer on a regular basis until we know that there won't be any issues between the two dogs. But what can we do to allow them to co-habitate without having to banish one or the other to their kennel?
Now that my boy Sisco-Ray is 6 months old I’ll be using some of these heel techniques that I’ve not implemented yet at this stage. My boy has the audible and hand sign commands down flat but he’s not making eye contact as much as I feel he should by 6 months of age but he has been increasing his eye contact for sure. I want eye contact upon his name call, even though he’s taking commands once I say his name, just no eye contact, that nose stays down or he stares at the passerby(while still taking commands, is this strange?)…
How do you do that? My daughter adopted a Great Dane/Lab mix from a rescue and he does listen but when we are outside and other kids or small dogs are around he wants to go play.
+Philippa Murphy I walk my Dane with a halter as well. The only way I can control her, as we are basically the same size. There is no discomfort or pulling with normal walking. It only pulls if she has a sudden burst forward, it just pulls the nose down and then she stops.
My Dane would bring me her leash and hold it in her mouth when we walked. She never bolted after other dogs or humans and stayed with me. I never had to holler at her for running off. She minded me better than my wife, who refused to hold the leash in her mouth.
LOL. Something else you may try, you've probably already heard of this little test but JIC here goes. Too see who is the most loyal, your wife or your dog, put both in the trunk of your car then shut the trunk. After about 15 minutes open the trunk and see which one is glad to see you. Caveat, use great caution while opening the trunk.
To them walking is like going on a hunt. Their energy is all naturally charged up. For dogs it's sex or exercise that calms them. Run or take them out more. Once each dog knows what is expected, try adding one at a time. You may have to go out with them more then once a day, but that's what you take on when you have this big of dog & that many dogs. If you have a place to let them run before going on a walk (backyard) it would be beneficial for all. Stop them, maintain control from the start.
What about other dogs approaching them? My dog is perfectly trained, and I am responsible, but it's not the case for a lot of dog owners, once we were almost attacked by one medium size dog and a small dog who pulled so hard on their owner that made him fall down and almost got loose, we ran, but what to do in these cases? I don't take my Great Dane out that much because I am afraid he is going to get in trouble due to irresponsible owners.
I was wondering when is the right time to train a Great Dane? I have a nine month old Great Dane and she is scared to go out the front door. What should I do so she wont be scared. I am also worried about her seeing other dogs on the street because she is very curious.
Anna Rose - And later still. Not an accepted color. Black, Mantle, Harlequin, Fawn, Blue and Brindle are the only accepted colors. Anything else is a genetic defect and not something you’ll find from a responsible breeder.
David Hogan...ON WHAT NICE CITY YOU ARE...????... EN QUE CIUDAD ESTAS TU....???? ..IT IS VERY BEAUTIFUL THE PLACE .....!!!...ES MUY HERMOSOEL LUGAR....!!!
Hi I have a 2 year old Great Dane and he barks at other dogs when we are driving (he is on the back of a ute). He was chased and attacked by a blue cattle dog when driving in town and I think it stems from that. What processes can I go through to get him out of this. He is really kind natured but his bark scares almost everyone and their dogs.
Have a male Fawn and a female Fawnequin, totally different. Male a gem, but does do this weird "bouncing" thing when he sees other dogs or people he wants to say hi to. Female could care less about anything....love that. But I could never walk the 2 like this......ever! (lay off the diff color thing) :-(
my wife and i just got a baby great day and we are walking her and she is pulling on the leash a ton!!! When i try to correct her she doesnt take a reward for being good because she is so distracted. Any advice??? i dont want to be drug around our neighborhood by our dog!
ok but you have the dog clipped/fastened to your most vulnerable point. Your center of gravity which would magnify any action by the dog. Am I incorrect?
