Walker B23i vs. Steep Hillside - Can It Handle It?

Today I got to demo the Walker B23i Northwest Edition mower (again) on by far the most difficult property I maintain. The hillside on this account is so steep that they only way to mow it with the Walker T25i is to go backwards.....but the Rep. for Walker wanted to test it on an even steeper part of the property that I only strictly do push mowing on because none of my zero turns could handle it. Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone who has been leaving comments!......One thing I forgot to mention in the video was the small back side hill that we started on, I only push mow that section because of how steep it is. The Rep wanted to see if the Walker could handle the slope which is why he was on the mower testing it out.

I have a older model B and a newer model S GHS . Model B is at least 30-40% better on hills.

I gotta agree with a stander wright or scag v2 in a 36 or 48 would walk all over that with out the same issues. Id be confident that after you got comfortable with the mower could go up and down that hard section that you push mow. I would have to measure the angle of some of the hills ive done but id say they are a good 40*45 deg right when the front wheels begin picking up off the ground is where i call it to dam steep to mow. Thats still a nice mower just doesnt really show it off where it performs best, and those wheels just makes me smh. At least hes already at a tire shop when he gets the flat.

We have 2 walkers as well, MT23 and a T23. We’ve found that running really low tire pressure in them helps with one hill sides, traction and keeps from the front and back tail wheels jumping around a lot. The wider tires would also help with hills on the B23. If you could run it with lower pressure in the tires I can guarantee it’ll do even better than it did in the video.

Well I read over the comments enough to see most of the guys didn't seem to think it did very good. Having a similar situation myself I would say it did very good. It's hard to tell in a picture just how steep a hill is but I could tell that one is pretty bad because it wanted to pull wheelies in reverse. I use my T25i on one that I always have to back up a small section of but I'm pleased because I can go forward over all but that one little place whereas using the walk behind takes 3 times as long and wears me out just walking up that hill. And those guys suggesting a Ventrac need to stop. Yeah a Ventrac would climb all over that hill but it's too big for that little job not to mention way more expensive than a Walker.

The side hill I always use a push, the front larger section I use my Walker T25i but it has to go backwards up the hill

Hey Jason, I have been a Walker fanboy for years and have even been to their factory. You should try the H Series; it has a wider stance, larger tires, and the benefit of ROPS for those hills. I personally wouldn’t take on those hills without ROPS, but I am quite a safety geek…

Have you ever tried Exmark? My 52 would handle that low slope without much fuss. I push on steeper slopes and it holds very well. Good vid!

You have to get a Ventrac with the 8 wheels to mow that safely. The Mean Green revolt & the 4 drive wheel wright stander may do it also.

Ya it does sadly. In thick green (dry) grass it would leave this grass line in the middle....it looked more like a rear discharge deck mowed it

Changing Seasons Landscape & Water Features there are some zero turns that are great for these hills. Cub cadets steering wheel zero turns own hills like this.

Had a woods zero turn same problem back up no problem I put windshield washer fluid in each tire was not close to same machine would go up any hill no extra weight on machine just on tires

In my opinion walkbehind mowers are the best for hills. We have a 36” hydro walkbehind and it works good on hills and only slides a little when turning.

I'm just a homeowner and I thought that mower did a horrible job, the big side hill was way too much for that mower for more then a 1 time deal. But even the front of the store around the sign I didn't think it did very well. the 6 tires just seems to make it a funky looking mow job and the person almost falling out the entire time. but what do I know I'm just a Home owner.

I would be looking into a different mower. I think it would be wise. because it didn't perform well enough on all of the aspects. And perhaps even wiser to consider reseeding a portion of that lawn before Discount Tire chooses to go with a different landscaper. God bless!

Ambrose, it's a great looking mower "hands down" and very capable.....in most situations! Buying this mower for sloping situations and comparing it to your bagger doesn't warrant buying this machine in my opinion. You can do better...even if it is not a Walker. Do you really feel like this is the superior mower on a slope?

A 48in walk behind would do really well on that property. Way better then having to push mow the side hill. Even a cheap used belt drive (which is all I'm really use to). Just a thought.

I’d personally prefer the regular Walker MB with the AT tires and the new comfort seat, not necessarily the Northwest edition. Simply because it has a lower center of gravity and grips so well.

This one is a mulch deck....the H models are the rear and mulch decks....Top Notch has one.

I would give the Walker a C- on that property. Cut Quality is the only good aspect of the Walker...everything else is lacking in my opinion. Plus they cost too much. I would be curious to see more mowers try to cut that property for a true comparison.

put the atv tyres on and the walker will climb anything as a test once i took the deck off lowered tyre pressurse and it climbed up my brick wall 90 decrees. only problem with mulching is if the grass is a bit wet it clumps

You should demo a Ferris stander mower. I have a z1 (48”) and it does amazing on hills. Mulches very well too.

Hey man I'm Walker man but if you're looking to do a lot of hills and you don't care about clutching the grass just mulching or side discharge go with the right stand up way faster better on fuel in the Walker night and day difference and way faster

I used the Fastrak on it....on the steep part I lost traction and almost went off the sidewalk sliding down the hill. Along the front side of the hill, the Fastrak would do great going up but not great doing down since you would have to go extremely slow and if you went to fast you would loose traction and mess up your lines

always back "up" a hill with a zero turn. take repeated cuts and it should take the same amount of time, you're still taking 50 inch cuts each pass. safety and patience is the key!

A stander would be much worse. I’ve used both machines on steer slopes, and the Walker MB consistently outperforms the stander. For slopes, the Walker MB is the way to go.

Hustler SDX, Trimstar, or both would make for quicker and easier mowing for that property. Seemed like the small drive wheels limited the traction.

We use John Deere Z540r zero turn with a mulch kit on far steeper hills than that and by the looks it would do a far superior job for you .

also you can traverse the hill just start from the top and work your way down and always turn with the deck swinging down the hill....way more traction to execute your turns

I love my walker but if I were doing some hills would look at a stander they seem to do the best. The B series walker will really shine this summer though when you want to mulch.

I would stick to another mower maybe a stander for hillsides, walker just doesn't fit that category well enough to justify a multi thousand dollar purchase. Just my opinion of course!

only thing I like about the mower is the rims, the steering between the legs and the feet on the deck I don't like . the steering will get uncomfortable and your feet will hurt from the vibration

If any mower can't go up a little slope, then walker needs to make the mower more reliable! Plus that is fake grass which is like a sponge. Even a regular mower would have a hard time...turf grass is so fake!

@@42swissmocha Not really to be honest, the things last forever, and their deck width would save you money in no time. Not to mention the ability to use it on multiple jobs, for any situation, which allows you to up charge. I know for a fact 30k isn't much especially when you compare it to a walker, which is about 10-20k.
