Hello Dave, You are Godsend. I have been searching for years to find a teacher who can hold my hand and walk along this beautiful journey of jazz piano. My search ends with you. You are just the perfect teacher to study something as profound as jazz piano. Your absolutely methodical way of teaching and your ability to break every concept down to its simplest of forms is very rewarding for a student. I am digging every lesson of yours and have also started with your Joy Of Improvisation Part I book. I am going to learn from you for the rest of my life.
OK it's a deal) If you would like a free skype lesson after the holidays perhaps that can be arranged, you can write to me directly at Dfrankjazz@aol.com..have fun)

Honestly, i think that this is one of the best videos that i have ever seen, both on the left hand walking bass line, as well as a general approach for adding right hand improvisation. A heartfelt "Thank You" for putting out this content for free! I plan to start looking through your other videos... I'm hoping that you have one on rootless voicings. Regardless, I'm sure that I will find many other gems in the process.
Hi Corey, thanks for writing) Please enjoy a visit to the master class archive at davefrankjazz.com for 57 in-depth jazz classes, all free for thee) For rootless voicings you may want to check out my Book series Joy of Improv, vol 1 +2, published by Hal Leonard. Blessings and keep swinging!
Thank you for this fantastic leap in my theory lack. Scaley...that's one thing I've been scratching my head about for a long while. Locally we suffer a shortage of bass players and as a lead guitar practicer for decades now that I have a synth this information that you put forth is like gold. Cheers.
Dave, I took great notes from this and developed a walking bassline for the first eight bars of Autumn Leaves adding a leading note at the end to take it back to the top! Thank you for this excellent video! I could not do this without you!

Dave, after so many frustrations trying to compose, to no avail. I finally said to myself let me get some foundation while I have fun. I started with this video today and will continue exploring your library. I will continue with ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-83lGz-rgi1w.html and BTW I couldn't find the video where you teach how to swing with your "slice of pizza pie" phrase video. I will be contacting you for some lessons soon. Thank you!
I used to think that my lines suffered when constricted by having to fill the bass role... but lately I feel like my right hand phrasing is stronger when walking bass... is there a reason?
Maybe you feel good once you nail the WB because you have to feel the groove and your phrases become more honest and musical. As Barry said: Rythm it's like 90% so if rythm is good the rest will come eventually
Mr Jason nihaniel school awesome yr tutorials are very informative brassy to understand some time pls teach us ant song structure intro, verse, hook, melody, base line inshore important parts of the song
Might Lennie Tristano have given the one finger exercise to force the student to play from the mind and not from the fingers? (i.e. to exclude motoric memory)
So glad I found you and your site. I am a bass player of 52 years self taught except for my college level Theory and ear training Tons of experience in pop, rock, country ,blues, and church type music. Your lessons rock, I am a bass player but get a lot more out of your stuff than Scott´s Bass Lessons. Will have to unsubscribe from SBL.
Very cool Dave.. Where's the 'one'?....I'm re-posting for my son and one other player I know who still learns......I guess you gig and teach...are there other assets you sell?

As as a bass player I've noticed a bass case at 0:27 and since then I have been waiting untill somebody takes it and starts playing the walking bassline on the bass. What a shame it didn't happen... Just kidding. Great lesson. It doesn't hold all the secret ingredients to effective walking bassline (more could be seen here on YT), but to my mind this lesson is still the most comprehesive and gives essential components in the right order. Thanks a lot! And best of luck.

I could spend the next year (or more) extracting all the fruit I can out of this one. There’s a key element where I must start writing MY OWN BASS LINES and at the appropriate time add various figurations to free myself of the handcuffs. THANKFUL FOR THE INSPIRATION AND INSIGHT!

thank you so much! I've been watching a lot of your videos and my word, you are brilliant. I wish I was as good (decent) as I am now when I first saw your videos. I would be living my dream by now. But no reason why I can't start right now and work onwards. thank you again got such amazing videos! and for the website. a lot of people don't do what you do and i respect that. goodluck with all your videos.
Thank you very much, Dave! You are truly a fantastic teacher. I've been struggling with walking bass-lines for ages, but your video made it all very clear and suddenly playing bass lines became a whole lot easier.
Dave Frank Oh, I forgot. You know how we mortals are. But in all seriousness though, I would like to thank you again. I have been watching some more of your videos and it really helps put a better perspective on jazz. Ever since I started playing piano I've been obsessing over how to get that ''Jazz'' sound you hear all the time. It really can't be explained, but you know it when you hear it. I'm sure you know what I mean. And what I wanted to say is that your videos have helped me demystify the different aspects that make jazz sound like well ... jazz. I've been watching these videos for a while now and just wanted to let you know that I am thankful for what you do. It's really boosted my piano playing and heavily influenced my style.
@@johnjacquard2182 wow, that's hard to believe haha! Please enjoy as much music as you like free on my YT channel, there's a ton of it) thanks for writing! you might want to check out Bill Evans)
WeretII D is the major 9 of cmaj7 so technically he's playing a cmaj9. Lead sheets usually indicate only the maj7 or dom7 and it's up to the musician which extensions to add for the desired mood.
+WeretII As well to add with what Retxloffs said, depending on the context of the piece and who you are playing with others, the extensions do change depending what key. Such as Cmin7 in the key Ab with its extension would be b9 being Db and not the actual 9th being D. I hear a lot of players do this out of the lack of knowledge, but if it works, great, but if another person would be soloing, it could create some unnecessary tension or/and confusion since the soloist might play Eb to Db over Cmin9 (with that D).
Great lesson, Dave. In this lesson you've artfully outlined, in great detail, the steps necessary to be proficient at playing baselines. There is easily enough material here for 6mo to 1 year of dedicated practice. One of the best lessons I have ever seen.
Are you new to Dave’s channel? He always says that, it’s quite charming. If you were on his email list you might even get an invitation- I did! Unfortunately I was not able to go. He has folks there listening. It’s a live recording.
