Walking in Beckley, West Virginia - Downtown 

Walked up those church steps many Sundays with my mom and sister. My home town! The downtown was bustling with people shopping, going to the movies, etc back in the 50's and 60's before the mall went in.

Lived there while stationed in the Army in the early '70s. Lived on Earwood St. Although, nothing looked terribly recognizable. Thanks for the video.

Lots of memories from Beckley. I moved for a job but my parents still live near Beckley. It’s comforting to go back.

I remember during I believe 1970 or so standing across from the Babtist church on the corner by the bridge watching the eclipse with my grandfather holding a piece of paper in front of our faces with a pinhole in the paper. Everything turned dark as night and slowly got brighter. It was kinda scary. The sun went behind the moon, and light slowly came out from behind the moon.

2:30- the cathedral looking building across the street is where the JC PENNEY (or Woolworths? I can't recall it has been so long) store used to be. It was remodeled in the eighties. I worked at a pizza place a couple blocks back.

I live in NC but i have a sometimes GF who lives in Beckley off the Eisenhower exit behind that GO-MART gas station on the hill. I see some homes in Beckley CHEAP but crime well above average? I bought a 2019 Hyundai Elantra from the Hyundai dealer there

Another dead town. Over the decades ma and pa shops closed and the shopping centers/walmart took people out of the downtowns. In Athens, Ohio, Walmart moved in and the small downtown of Athens died, as did JC Penny, Kmart, and every other clothes shop. Walmart literally destroyed and shut down the only shpping mall they had.
