We started our day by walking to Piazza del Popolo, a large urban square in Rome. The name in modern Italian means "People's Square," but it comes from the poplars from which the church Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, gets its name.
Piazza del Popolo is a beautiful square dominated by an Egyptian obelisk. The Egyptian theme continues in a fountain with Egyptian lions and a dozen sphinxes on the walls around it.
Bernini created the arched entrance to Piazza del Popolo for Pope Alexander VII. Santa Maria del Popolo, the most charming church in the Piazza, has beautiful Renaissance treasures, a dramatic tomb, and two unique paintings by Caravaggio.
The other two churches on the piazza are called "twins" because they look similar at first glance. It's fun to stop and notice the many differences in their architecture.
Then we visited the Spanish Steps, an architectural masterpiece that has inspired countless writers, artists, and musicians over the centuries. With the 135 Steps overlooking a quiet promenade, this has become a popular place for tourists to relax and look at Rome's cobblestone streets. Many people consider the Spanish Steps a highlight of Rome's Baroque period, especially since they were built to link the streets of Italy's capital to the French Church of Santa Trinità dei Monti.
At the top of the stairs is the impressive Church of Trinità dei Monti, which was built in the Gothic style in the sixteenth century. Trinità dei Monti is one of the five Francophone Catholic churches in Rome. Inside are works of art like "The Deposition of the Cross" and "The Assumption of Daniele de Volterra."
At the end of the day, the two of us were hungry and seeking a restaurant when we stumbled onto the Bono Bottega Nostrana on Piazza di Spagna. My friend Yves and I ordered sandwiches and were so pleased with them that we each ate three. I've never had a delicious sandwich, which makes me so happy that I thought I would cry.
