The mangrove forests are essential to maintaining a balanced ecosystem. They thrive in environments that offer a mix of fresh and salt water. In 2012 a 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. The earth rose and shifted the sand bar at the mouth of the estuary where it meets the ocean so that the water could no longer flow freely in and out. Devastatingly, the mangroves drown from a lack of balanced water. There has been a restoration project in place and slowly the Avellanas mangrove forest is coming back to life!
