You didn’t need the mask. It made it difficult to understand what you were saying. Also, Jefferson Davis was not “held hostage” but rather was confined as a prisoner at FM after his capture. Hard to believe you missed that. Further, none of the houses “are still used by the military.” The base closed in 2011 and the houses are now leased as private residences. You missed one major point of historical significance. FM is the site where Africans were first brought as slaves to English-speaking North America in 1619. There is a marker across the street not too far from the lighthouse.
Thank you for this update. There is a lot of history at Ft Monroe and Yes, the 1619 African Landing Memorial is at Point Comfort. During the Civil War, the Union had control of the fort and the fort became an outpost of freedom within the Confederacy when Union commanders used it to house refugee slaves. During this visit, all of the building were closed and Masks were required within the fort area. What a wonderful place to learn some history and I need to return when it is fully open for visits and re due a video where everyone can hear me. Have a great day
