Jim Thorpe
Town in Pennsylvania
Jim Thorpe is a town in eastern Pennsylvania. The Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center details the area’s coal mining history, and the life of the town’s namesake, Native American athlete Jim Thorpe. In nearby Lansford, No. 9 Mine and Museum is set in a 19th-century anthracite coal mine. On the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway, century-old coaches powered by diesel engines take passengers into Lehigh Gorge State Park.
The small town of Jim Thorpe was originally called Mauch Chunk, a name given to a nearby mountain by the Lenni Lenape Indians, meaning "Mountain of the Sleeping Bear." The town is nestled in the Lehigh Gorge, so it has beautiful scenery to accent the history, which the town represents. One of the best ways to enjoy Jim Thorpe is to walk along the winding streets that gave it its nickname of the "Switzerland of America." You can also meander along one of the many hiking trails to enjoy the scenic views of the gorge and the Lehigh River.
Soak in the historic Victorian architecture in the Old Mauch Chunk Historic District that has eight sites listed on the National Historic Register. Then, see where the tycoons of the coal and lumber industry lived along Millionaire's Row. Take a tour inside the Asa Packer Mansion Museum to see how the wealthy lived in the region in the 1800s.
This is my first time visiting JIM THORPE and I wanted to visit it with you guys. Many people say Jim Thorpe looks like a small town from Switzerland. I have never been to Switzerland so this is the closest I can get to it in 2020 lol. Jim Thorpe is considered one of Pennsylvania's best towns. It is ranked as #2 on some lists and #3 on others as best towns in PA. It was a fabulous experience!

OMG AWESOME!!!!! I lived here for a few years and LOVED it! During winter it def looks like small towns in Switzerland that I've been to. Especially when it would snow! OMG it's beautiful up there when it snow. Actually it's beautiful all year round. My dream is to move back there and retire but with being disabled it makes it extremely hard to move back especially with my finances because they really don't give you much when you get disability money, It's sad because you work hard all your life I'm 50 and worked since was 14. But even having good jobs and working all those years I get barely anything. Yet the woman next door to me never worked a day in her life and is on disability for being a junkie and she gets more then I do because my husband works. But anyway sorry I got off topic but you know how it is lol. But yes Jim Thorpe is a beautiful place to live or just visit. I think I'm going to try and take my husband up there next year for a winter vaca. He's from Vietnam and has never been skiing or sledding. If covid wasn't here I'd go this weekend.

Just moved to PA 6 months ago from NYC , looking forward to visiting Jim Thorpe now in the Spring . Love Philly and all the murals ,haven’t been there in years. Go Giants ! 😉 Mauch Chunk means Bears Place in the native Munsee-Lenape Native American language. Founded as Mauch Chunk in 1818 , renamed after Olympic winner Jim Thorpe in 1953.

The town changed its name in 1954 from Mauch Chunk to Jim Thorpe, a story that has to rank as one of the most unusual in American history. (Mauch Chunk means Bear Place in the native Munsee-Lenape Native American language.)

I live in a small town in Pa. and it is an old town. Most of the homes were built in the 1800's. Alot of the homes are either huge three story brick homes with awnings over top every window and wooden shutters on the outside and double wooden front doors with the old door knockers or are victorian homes with different architectural styles to the homes, some with the rounded castle tops and others in gothic style and they have the original rod iron fencing around the properties. Most of the homes are historic past down from generation to generation. One of these homes was donated by a well to do family and made into the towns library. The church is very old with all the original stained glass windows. There is also an old mill with a water wheel and a waterfall. There is a fountain in the middle of town It's like talking a walk into the past. It is something out of a story book.

Exciting I see no one complained that the city should remove their church bells. It's properly very beautiful on a snowy covered evening

I live about an hour and some change from Jim Thorpe. It's a gorgeous little town. I haven't been there for a while but its so worth going for the architecture alone. I live in an 1886 Post Civil War Era Folk Victorian house. No where near as fancy as these lol but there IS something to be said about the architecture of that day. Nothing and I mean nothing comes close to it. I can not tell you how much I enjoyed this walking tour. Thank you :o)

I was born and raised in this town and it is was and always will be amazing!! I left about 15 years ago because up my husband's job but I miss it terribly!! It truly is a magical place! Nothing scary at all about it! In the summertime it is so packed with people that you can barely move and many people from the city did move to Jim Thorpe when they retired! You are just on one street which is the main street Broadway. There are many other Steets. There is an upper Jim Thorpe and and over the bridge Jim Thorpe. Most of the shops and eateries are on Broadway the street you are on right now. I lived on Race Street until I left to get married. You should take a walk down Race Street and also a walk down High Street. High Street is so steep that in the winter the kids only the brave kids wood sleigh ride down that Hill! It's actually hard to walk down that Hill! Also do not leave Jim Thorpe without seeing ASA Packer mansion. They have tours throughout the day of this mansion! ASA Packer was a millionaire back in those days that was a big deal and over the bridge Jim Thorpe has many homes that millionaires lived in! Really it's not as small as you think. I so enjoyed this video because it will always be my favorite place on Earth and I thank you very much!

It's pronounced "Ar-tiss-sinul" .... I have been to many PA towns and this one looks like most but maybe a little nicer. Philly and Pitt get most of the attention but the state is made up of mostly small towns like this one. It's about 30 or so min north of Allentown and only has 4700 residents. I remember the film in which Burt Lancaster played Jim Thorpe. He was a native American who was forced to attend a reform school for Indians in Carslile PA. I watched the film as a small kid at school and was blown away and shocked by the discrimination his people experienced. It really hit home for me. He became a pro and Olympic athlete. Still he faced terrible discrimination and turned to alcohol. Although he never visited the town named after him by his widow, he is buried there and honored by the town. Thorpe was actually from an Indian reservation in Oklahoma. I suppose that his widow felt that the town would do a good job forever keeping his name alive. Check out the film if you get a chance, it looked like Oscar material to me.

I know you wanted to get the raw experience of exploring Jim Thorpe, but this would of been the one time you should of researched the town prior to your visit. The historical past of Mauch (Mock) Chunk, now Jim Thorpe is tremendous. Entirely too much information to try and post here in the comment section. Recommended topics: Jim Thorpe, Olympian; The Molly Maguires (The jail and The Handprint); Asa Packer; and of course, Anthracite Coal. Also, best time to visit is in Autumn.

BTW the police across the street? You saw the overflow parking cause you were literally on the steps of the police station before the mansions. And the church? That was the courthouse. It says it on the window 😆

Haha.... a hour and a half isn't really bad. I start getting antsy on 3-4 hour drives. Imagine some people drive from Philadelphia to Florida and from what I hear that's like a 17-18 hour drive!!! I would HATE THAT DRIVE hahahaha. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts. Enjoy your day :)
