Brrrr. The weather has certainly turned as we explore the little town of White Sulphur Spring, MT in a virtual walking tour. The snow was falling and it was wet and sloppy but at least the wind wasn't so bad. We're expecting much colder temperatures this week. This treadmill scenery walk covers nearly all of White Sulphur which is located between Livingston and Great Falls and not far from Showdown Ski Area and the Smith River. We love going up to this town to soak in the hot springs or hit Newland Reservoir. It has a lot of great charm and personality to make up for its smaller size. I hope you enjoy this snowy virtual walking tour of White Sulphur Springs.

Would go there to visit two sets of great grandparents for holidays when I was a kid. Christmas in white sulphur springs was hard to beat. Some of the best memories of my life.

I grew up here many years ago. Enjoyed seeing my old hometown. The Castle Museum is interesting. At one time, it was apartments and I took piano lessons in one of the apartments Thanks for the memories.

Enjoyable walk again Henry. Really love small towns in US. Am always struck by the width of the roads and the amount of yard and parking space even quite modest properties have! Here in UK everything is so compact and limited in comparison. Just too many people on too small a land mass now I guess. Anyway regarding your question about including some shorter walk of the smaller towns, I think that would be ok, but still 30 mins on this walk seemed just about perfect to me.

The mine there will be underground with very little surface interactions. It can be done well. Mining companies are changing now because of the pressure we put on them to look after the environment!

Thank you very much for these! I love the Dakotas and Montana territory, since I have family there. I know this might be intrusive, but is it possible to do a walking tour of the Native reservations in those areas?

Glad you like them! I've been trying to think of a way to do that in a respectful way but, while people are mostly welcome to visit (in normal times), I don't think it is my place to do a walking tour there. Maybe at some point I could hire a guide to film with but I wouldn't feel like I was being sensitive to their situation and culture doing it on my own.

As much a cultural insight into rural America as it is a walk in a small town. Disappointing about the mine. At some point I imagine the copper will be tapped out, the Smith will eventually reclaim nature, and depression will eventually reclaim the workers forgotten by the mining company when the profits dry up. Thank you for the walk.

Yes, unfortunately, it will take generations for nature to reclaim the scars. Responsible mining is possible but rarely done. -H

Thank you for the tour, I can get a bit of the flavor of the place. Mining pro considering the place for employment. The proposed mine is planed to be underground with minimal surface disturbance. There is a technical report that discusses environmental and engineering concerns and how they intend to meet the standards for excellence in stewardship. Profit and sustainable protection of the environment do not have to be exclusive. That is my .02 bucks.

You could probably produce more videos by doing some shorter walks, maybe not spending as much time in the residential spaces. Be careful with that bc even in small towns people can be very suspicious about strangers walking through with cameras. I'm sure you're probably being tracked by the neighbors and residents when you do that. Most people probably won't mind though as long as you keep going😉 Never been to Montana but have enjoyed the videos, seeing a part of America that's not usually showcased in the media. The landscapes are beautiful. There's more to life than picture postcard tourist sites.

@@CityWalks No,but I think that’s on my bucket list. I didn’t really know that the guy built the town until I did some digging online. I also didn’t know that his house is still in the town and that after Dr. Parberry and my 2nd great aunt Matilda passed away became the residence of the son of one of the Ringling Brothers.
