Walking with Tish Gervais in the East Village - mid 1980s

At this time in the mid-1980s, Tish Gervais was the transgendered star of the moment in New York - not only because she was transgendered but also because she was sexy and talented too. Along the way, Tish and Nelson encountered Lady Bunny with DJ Dmitry and Tish found serveral magazines featuring her photograph. Video by Nelson Sullivan.

This had to be 1986 as the DOW was near 1854.40 with a high of 1895.95 and the American Express card redesign could be referencing the Amex Optima which finally released in 1987. Also the NY Talk magazine featuring Keith Haring on the cover came out in June 1986!

Just read up on Tish Gervais and they lead a fascinating - albeit troubled - life! Round about the time of this video (1986) she decided to de-transition back to Brian Belovitch. I find Nelson's videos so culturally and historically important and thankful they're out there for anyone to discover 😊

Don't idealize it... there was lots of violence and aggression. I lived in the Lower East Side all through the 80s and for every groovin' video like this, there were a half-dozen cases of people OD'ing, getting mugged, cases of brutality, vicious cops, etc.

The internet has the effect of constantly reminding you that someone could be recording you at your lowest just to get some views on the internet. This feels like the Antithesis of that, it’s merely a friend wanting to record an outing with another friend. Just peaceful and very in the moment lest he forget this beautiful day out.

I was born in the mid 70s so grew up during this time. I miss it so much, families and friends got together to do things and children played together outside together. People greeted each other on the streets and had actual conversations. The diners and stores were original and friendly as customer service meant something. It pains me to think my children never got to experience this. Now I'm sitting typing this and my kids are on their tablets, they have friends over who are also just sitting on their phones. It's just sad.

Mid-70s, like yourself. Harder when you remember the good old days, isn't it. I think humankind has been more cursed than blessed with all this 'tech'. Hardly anybody's living real-time. I notice it more with not having a phone atm, and I realise I was recently one of the morons, nearly getting hit by a car because I was crossing the road whilst texting! Maybe make your kids put their devices away for family time every day. They'll thank you later in life.

This type of comment has been said by generations. There have been recordings since the Roman times of people saying that the youth are doing things stupid and will cause the downfall of civilizations. Sooner or later those kids you speak of will say the same exact thing to their children in the future.

This is all before Chancellor Giuliani and his successor President of NYC Michael Bloomberg made it a playground for the 2 dimensional rich. It's true money can't buy you love and in the case of modern NYC it can't buy you culture. I'm so glad I got to live through some of this (I was in my late teens) and now I only long for the past.

pal joey Except it was conservative politicians who changed NYC into what people dislike, not liberals. Liberals would have kept the city the way it was. All of America’s premier, world class cities are liberal and that’s why they thrive and attract people from all over the world. No one likes what conservatives turn cities into.
@JustinLHopkins
@JustinLHopkins 6 лет назад
pal joey Ok, it’s apparent that you’re the type who blames everything on the side you disagree with because nothing your side has done resulted in negative outcomes. There was a time when I’d engage, but there’s nothing we can say that will change each others minds. I will say that Stockholm is one of my favorite cities and I’m sorry to inform you that Muslims haven’t taken over. You should be smart enough to know that both the right and the left greatly exaggerate things to promote an agenda. Also, Tokyo and Seoul aren’t conservative by any means. Have you actually visited these cities, like me, or have you simply read someone’s biased take on them?
@JustinLHopkins
@JustinLHopkins 6 лет назад
pal joey Liberal states are the economic engine of the U.S.. The higher ones education the more likely they are to identify as liberal, which is why liberal cities contain the majority of intellectuals and highly productive people. Drop outs are more likely to vote republican, whereas people who’ve attained advanced degrees tend to be democrat. Conservative states are the poorest, rank at the bottom in education and have the highest percentages of people on welfare. These states actually cost the country money. Liberal cities also have far lower crime rates than most conservative cities in the Midwest and south. Your opinions simply do not align with reality, which is common amongst conservatives. Studies show conservatives are more susceptible to propaganda. Bottom line. If it weren’t for liberals, we’d still be in the dark ages.
@lightsoff9008
@lightsoff9008 6 лет назад
pal joey NYC is actually being more modernized and cleaned up. This was when NYC was a straight up shithole with every building looking like it’s about to fall any moment even in the downtown area.

Did else notice the NYC relic at 3:40? I mean the Austrian dude's basement apt with a streetside terrace! They were awesome and the cheapest because they were usually one room spaces & people didn't like living at street level back then. Long gone as living spaces, they were all turned into spas or restaurants by the mid 1990s. Simply seeing video of it is awesome - these little reminders are why many people love this channel...

One could say there was more blue collar crime, but you could actually afford to live there; where the corporate hotels now stand once stood small family owned apartments above the proudly owned mom and pop shops. They didn't just have street vendors, they had entire street shops with all the windows and doors busted out where they'd sell handmade art, posters, t-shirts, and vinyl. You could actually sell part of your store on the sidewalk, so when walking by you were forced to stop. All the cars you'd see were made in America up until the 1990's, there were spots to graffiti and paint on the walls. No police up your ass with their stop and frisk and you weren't under surveillance 24/7, you could smoke pot or even snort coke on the sidewalk and no one would care or bother you, and jaywalking was legal. Music and comedy basement clubs were everywhere that seems to have disappeared, and Greenwich Village and Times Square was more then just a family friendly tourist attraction; quite the opposite. Folks still had the distinguished New York and Jersey accents, and people were happy to talk to one another. You could find a good paying job no problem without a college degree, and we actually made everything in America at the NYC factories. They'd have you use tokens on the subway instead of cards which totally makes sense; you lose one token no problem, you lose your entire card and you can't get on. They actually gave you real silverware and ceramic coffee mugs at real coffee shops, instead of the plastic and styrofoam everything given out by corporate Starbucks that have taken over. Loitering was allowed, and hey the magazines weren't glossy and not half filled with ads! When there was a heat wave the fire department would come around and crack open the fire hydrants for all to run through like a sprinkler spilling over into the streets. People also used to take care of the city themselves, instead of waiting for a city official to rake the leaves or so on; it was pride, and you could actually afford a ticket to a Yankees game. Point being, people used to mind their own business, live and let live in a carefree world; too many over sensitive wealthy entitled snobbies overtaking the city today and they're so judgmental. I don't know what it is, people weren't in such a rush and they were happy. Now it's sadly only a place to live if you are the best of the best Harvard material to work on Wall Street, so you can afford to live there. The freaks who built the city were kicked out and it happened in San Francisco too. I think to put it best, NYC was sterilized by Bloomberg and Giuliani that came before, so this period is commonly referred to as the pre Giuliani New York. They were Republican fascists that sold out the city to corporate oligarchs on Wall Street, we need an Ed Koch again; a liberal with sanity. luckily Mayor de Blasio even though he’s not perfect has been a breath of fresh air.

Thank you for taking the time to illustrate your memories so nicely, really appreciate the visuals you gave me - & so well said, it truly is heart wrenching to see us (people) going further & further in the wrong direction. I remember being a kid in the 80s & going into the city with my mother for work. She would always give this one homeless man half her sandwich and she'd always tell me to stay close, as not every area en route was too safe... you'd see more of a variety of people, less fearful of self-expression and yes, sometimes there were more ... "less favorable" types on the street, but the city felt Alive. It was extremely diverse, not that it isn't anymore, but it felt more authentic then- street artists and vendors and graffiti... Being unique was cool, now it seems being a narcissistic selfie taking poser is. & Times Square looks like Disney World:/. I long for the raves & outlaws that use to take place too. The system was looser, no stupid, archaic cabaret law being enforced, for ex. We could Truly let go and be free to party and dance all night, without there being an absurd amount of cops outside and nowadays if anything even does go down, it tends to get shut down. Limelight, Key Skate, The Tunnel, Exit ETC. So many good memories, I got the tail end but I'm so grateful I at least got a taste of the real Apple!

I was a teen in the CT suburbs at this time. The first time I went to Manhattan with just friends and no adults was to see the Ramones at the Ritz in 1989. First time ever in the East Village and 1st time I ever saw a heroin addict in punk clothes half unconscious on the street.

@@kvskvs1347 No. My friend's bf had a car so we drove in and drove back while I was drunk in the backseat. The arcade game back there 8:10 is called "speed racer" and it was released by namco in 1995. That is highly odd... there must be a speed racer arcade game in the 1980's to explain this game being in a video that was shot in the mid 1980's (but I am unable to find anything about that online). If that isn't the case, I might have just spotted the first proof of a time travel gadget put into the past for Nelson to film on his videocam (but I really don't know what a time traveller would gain from putting a 1990's arcade videogame into the background of a mid 1980's video from Nelson). ;)
@Qeisama
@Qeisama 5 лет назад
That is so trippy. But after replaying for dozens of time, I think that is not the 1995 Speed Racer arcade. Look at 8:20, the logo is different. It was not "racer" but it ends with a "g" or a "9". The gameplay is also different. Although the white racing car looks like Mach 5, the presentation is vastly different from the 1995 arcade game. EDIT: *I FOUND IT!!!* It was Speed Buggy developed by Tatsumi in 1985! The logo, the presentation, the machine, everything matched!!!
@Tristan3D
@Tristan3D 5 лет назад
Thanks! :) I saw that with the letters in the logo too, but I wasn't sure which game it actually could be. :)

@@Qeisama It was interesting to see it under the name 'Speed Buggy' as I always knew it as 'Buggy Boy'. There was a really good version for the Commodore Amiga 500 which I think a lot of people will have played. It's interesting to see the arcade version in the wild!
