Another thing, when adjusting the speed, make sure you are using FRESH batteries. If the batteries are even somewhat weak, the player will play too fast when fresh batteries are installed.

If you are using a CrO2 or metal test-tone tape, you must set the "TAPE" switch at the top to "CrO2/Metal" instead of "NORM." Otherwise, the tone outputted by the Walkman will fool the calibration program and give you a faulty adjustment. Additionally, the "DOLBY NR" switch must be set to "OFF," otherwise, it will also alter the output tone.

@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech Год назад
Hi, I've been watching your video over the last few days (been a busy week). Bench power supply, oscilloscope, you have some nice kit. Sorry, I don't have the dimensions, but I ordered it from fixyouraudio.com and it shipped from Slovakia, they have a good reputation and are reasonably priced, subject to shipping cost. Deck Tech also make good belts. Neither list the dimensions, otherwise people would just buy cheap belts instead.

Thanks for this. I do some repairs on the Sony Walkman and recently go the exact same as you have here. Replaced belt but have an issue with it always kicking back into the reverse mode. Place a tape for a 30 seconds then kicks into backwards talking. Any ideas would be great.
@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech 2 года назад
Interesting problem. To clarify, when it reverses, does it play the other side of the tape, or the same side backwards? If it's playing backwards, then maybe the belt is either the wrong size or incorrectly routed. I'm not an expert, so could be completely wrong. Other things to check are that the pinch rollers and capstans are clean and functioning properly, and the spindles (or whatever they're called) are spinning and taking up the tape in the cassette. Let me know if I misunderstood anything.

I have the same one but one side the headphones jack just throws 1 channel the right side sounds very low how can I fix it
@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech Год назад
Hi. Mine is the same, a little. In low volumes one side is quiet but it's not so bad at higher volumes. I don't know the answer, but I did a little research and it could be many things. First, Make sure you're not using a modern headphone with a mic, as these have a different plug arrangement. If you're using an old fashioned stereo headphones, try cleaning the inside of the headphone jack socket by cutting the end off a q-tip or cotton bud, spraying IPA on the stem of the cottonbud and pushing it in and out the headphone socket. If it still doesn't work properly, it could be that the play heads are out of alignment, or a bad solder joint on the headphone socket, or you might need to replace the capacitors. Thinking about it, it could be that the volume control is oxidized and might need some contact cleaner. Please let me know if you get it fixed.

Question I have a different sony walkman from the 80s but I replaced the belt but it runs a little slow. Know why maybe?
@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech Год назад
Hi. I don't know why, but they usually have a small speed adjustment screw you can use. Often it's accessible through a hole in the circuit board, sometimes through a hole in the case itself.

Hey there. I wanted to see if there was any way to see how to fix the screen in any way. Mine is showing some but not all of the bits of the numbers, making it illegible especially for the clock and radio stations. I hope you read this and if you have any tips, I’d much appreciate it!
@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech Год назад
Hi. I don't really know the answer, but I guess it's one of the following: If the screen is connected to the circuit board with a ribbon cable then detach the cable and reinsert it, maybe cleaning it gently with IPA. If the display is soldered to the motherboard then you might be able to reflow the solder (search RU-vid for 'reflow solder'). Or, just buy a replacement from eBay and keep yours for spares :)
@Undercoversteve96
@Undercoversteve96 Год назад
@@CBitsTech thanks! I didn’t expect to get an answer from an old video. It appears it has a ribbon connection, but I’ll have to figure out a way to get the screen out of the front if the connection issues aren’t inside the back housing where you opened it up in the video. Sorry I didn't get back to you, it was a very busy time for me and I missed a few comments. Unfortunately (or fortunately), I haven't had to replace pinch rollers and I don't have a suggestion for where to get them. I searched RU-vid for 'pinch rollower replacement' and there are a few RU-vidrs who I like that have done this. Look for 'Old School' (who seems to have the most videos), Techie Zeddie, and maybe ANT&TEC. They might recommend a supplier. Good luck!

I have done all of this with the original belt but whenever I play it the Walkman will just play a loud static noise do I need a new belt or is it a problem with something else
@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech 2 года назад
A static noise is unlikely to be the belt. I'm not sure what it could be, other than checking that the batteries have sufficient power. Do the solder joints near the headphone jack look good? Can you post a video showing the problem please, and put a link here?

@CBitsTech
@CBitsTech 3 года назад
Hi. Yes, it is easy, bit fiddly. I edited out a minute or so of me trying to get the belt on. It didn't sound too good at first. It was a little fluttery and not very good on the left channel. Sounds pretty good now it has had a chance to work the old lubrication around. I think the volume wheel isn't right. At very low volumes it's louder in the right ear, but at louder volumes it's ok. Also, playing one side of the tape is quieter on the left track. Maybe it will get better. I haven't used it much since finishing the repair yesterday afternoon.
