WALKS IN DORSET at DEWLISH

This is another video in my series “Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I am at the pretty village of Dewlish which is located in the centre of the county. My 4 mile “figure of eight” route starts & finishes in the village.
The “bottom loop” of the walk starts at the lovely Church of All Saints and takes me South across a field that has earthworks relating to a long abandoned Medieval village towards the magnificent Dewlish House. After passing through the Dewlish House estate, the route goes uphill along the side of Park Hill on an atmospheric woodland path.
After passing back through the village, I start out on the “top loop” of the walk by heading North towards the old Mill and then on to some stunning chalk downland. The steady climb up to the top of the ridge is worth the effort with some amazing 360 degree views over the beautiful Dorset countryside. After a brief stop to take in the scenery, there is one final downhill leg back to the village.
This was our first “video walk” of 2021 on an early Spring morning with glorious sunshine & a freshness to the temperature.
A detailed map of the route is show at the end of the video.
Map courtesy of Google Maps.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

I'm having an afternoon of watching Dave Ford videos and loving it. Logan seems to understand every word of your story. What a beautiful dog he is. I think I need a glass of red Burgundy now. Strictly for research you understand before dinner! Bon appétit as we say here in France.

Another beautiful walk with lots of interest. I now know how to spot King Alfred's Cakes fungi. Favourite view - the little stream beside the old mill, favourite moment - Logan 'listening' to your story 😄

Thanks Jackie. I think that Logan was struggling to keep his concentration with the story! Thanks for watching.

These deserted villages are fascinating Dave. There is an atmospheric lost settlement near Plush called Lyscombe which still has substantialrelics of the chapel and barn. Maybe one for a future walk!

Thank you Dave and Logan, enjoyed the walk. The field you could see with the stripes had been rolled, to push any stones back into the soil, so as not to damage the mowers when cut for silage. The field you were stood in was growing maize, you can see the stalks left after harvest, it did have a green tinge, so it may be sown with another crop or just grass / weed regrowing.

Thanks Christine. Despite working as a farming bank Manager (covering Dorset) for 5 years, I always did struggle to identify crops in their early weeks - much to the amusement of my customers - (even though, in this case, there were plenty of old corncobs on the ground)! I had forgotten, of course, about the "rolling process" on chalkland pasture . Thanks for watching.

Glorious walk Dave. I don’t know that place at all, although we travel from Blandford to Dorchester often, so must have been close to the village. But as you say, it’s been bypassed. Very impressed with that Manor house and the church. Your new microphone was working well. Very clear dialogue. The information you keep in your head is amazing. I realize you probably read up on the area, but you still have to recall it when needed. Logan has a knack of looking bored, but I’m sure be enjoys his walks once you’re on the move.

Thanks for the feedback on the microphone. The best / clearest sound that I get is when using the Rode shotgun microphone which sits on the camera. With the ""dead cat" wind muff, it eliminates all wind noise (even in really windy conditions). The Rode wireless microphone does give me the flexibility to be up to 70 yards away from the camera but the actual sound isn't quite as good - it does have a "muffled" feel to it. Going forward, I will use the shotgun mic most of the time with the wireless for the odd scene. For example, I recently did a scene inside an iron age hill fort with the camera set up on the rampart - so it was great for that.

@@DaveFord Thanks for getting back to me. I must look into wireless mics. I’ve uploaded my first videos to RU-vid in the past few days, but I’ve got a lot to learn. A great deal of my knowledge comes from watching you.

Really nice walk Dave, the sound was perfect with your new gear. I have just ordered a Mod for my Gopro but I don't think it will be as good as your wireless mic. I enjoyed the views of Dorset and the stories thank you.
@DaveFord

Thanks Peter. I still think that the "shotgun" microphone (that sits on top of the camera) produces the best quality sound (it is excellent in cutting out wind noise) but the wireless microphone does give me flexibility in filming some scenes up to 70 yards away from the camera! I think you will notice a big difference with your MOD & indeed if you can add a lavalier microphone to it as well then even better. Although the internal microphone on most cameras are OK, they are never seem as good as an external microphone and audio is so important on videos - poor audio (ie wind noise) can ruin a good video (even if the images are excellent).

Hello Dave, another beautifully captured walk, rammed full of history and facts. There are so many Royal Oak pubs around Wiltshre, Somerset and Dorest..in fact I'm going to Google popular pubs names UK now! The tail of the elephant and the mouse was interesting 🐘🐭 Have a great weekend , Ceri and Kat ❤☕🤗

Great to see you’ve topped a thousand subscribers Dave and Logan! Another lovely walk too, thank you. A question if I may - where do you source the various old maps you reference in your programmes? As a bit of a map enthusiast myself, I’d be interested to know.

Thanks Ian. The maps are from the National Library of Scotland website - their "side by Side" maps (free access). There are all sorts of maps from different years. You can play about with the screen and it can show you side by side or sweep (comparing the map with the present aerial pictures). Here is the website: maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/swipe/#zoom=15&lat=50.8268&lon=-1.3937&layers=1&right=BingHyb
