This is another video in my series “Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I am at Stourpaine - a pretty village located about 3 miles North of Blandford Forum.
My 3 mile circular walk, which starts & finishes in the village, takes me up to the magnificent Hod Hill where I get to explore the site of what is the largest iron age hill fort in Dorset. Along the way I enjoy beautiful meander along the banks of the enchanting river Stour and of course experience some quite stunning countryside views.
Right at the start of the walk I take a small detour (of about 800 yards to the South) to have a look at some earthworks that relate to an abandoned portion of the village as well as the remains of the Stourpaine & Durweston Halt - that was on the old Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway line.
I was filming in March and the weather was glorious - the temperature was well above 20 degrees although there was a cooling breeze at the top of Hod Hill.

I saw Pipers crisps in Cotehele House on Sunday. Made me think of Logan. I’ve never heard of them.

Just did this walk this morning Dave, on a perfect spring day. Lovely little village, the woods along the stour lined with bluebells and alive with birdsong, and hod hill dramatic and scenic with clear views and a herd of cows grazing up there!

Loved the walk and the sights. I am beginning to wonder where you get your weather forecast from because it sure ain't the BBC lol.

Nice video Dave and what amazing weather for March. It's amazing what is hidden under our landscapes. Great job in exposing them, have a great day

Thanks. A great walk but I wouldn't want to be up on top of Hod Hill during a gale!

I enjoyed that walk Dave, so did my wife who comes from Dorset. The ramparts on Hod Hill fort are really big. Your sound was great I would not have known it was windy up there if you had not said it was. You must have done another mile videoing your walk up the hill then going back for the camera. Nice video.

I’ve been a fan of the old Somerset and Dorset railway, but I wasn’t aware of that little halt. I don’t think I’ve ever through Stourpain, but did look nice.if that was filmed this year, you were lucky with the weather.

Thanks Lionel. Yes, indeed it was filmed this year. We had a fairly good late March / early April with the weather (which helped with the filming). I wish that May had been better though!

Hi Dave, just subscribed and this is my 4th video of the day. I’ve walked this hill many times from different directions. I agree the views, as with Hambledon Hill are quite breathtaking.

Thankyou for the vid. Bit disappointed though, as before we came to live in Canada, we lived in Stourpaine, in the white thatched cottage opposite the school, and you stopped filming just before you got there! Nice to see other parts of the village, though, and up the hill!

Lovely but the roads can be hell when the local steam fair is on, not something to worry about this year though.

Thanks Darren. You certainly have to "plan" your journeys when the Great Dorset Stream Fir is on, that is for sure!

in my youth - 1940's nobody pronounced the W in Durweston - it was was just ''Durreston''.

On my travels, I find that it is surprising how often people that live in the same village often pronounce their village name differently!

Not a wag of air but you must have been skrowed on this one with all that toing and throwing with the camera set up. Can't you get Logan to do this for you? Hey not many atchin-tans today? Where is the nearest gav to you Dave? I see you've got a new katy, very smart. As always enjoyed it tremendously. I know this was filmed 2 years ago though.
