This is another video in my series “ Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I take a walk from Finchdean to Chalton - a hamlet & a village on the Hampshire / West Sussex border. Finchdean is located about 5 miles North of Havant.
I park my car at a free car park in the centre of Finchdean and after a quick exploration of this pretty hamlet, I start my 4.5 mile circular route by heading Northwards over a meadow & up a ridge to join the Staunton Way.
After going through a delightful section of woodland, I pass by the Old Idsworth Garden, an ice house & a reconstructed pond before reaching my next destination - St Hubert's church at Idsworth.
The medieval village of Idsworth is long gone but it's enchanting church still survives with it's wonderful 1th century wall paintings.
I continue North along the Shipwrights Way, under the London to Portsmouth railway line (via a tunnel) and climb Chalton Down where I get to enjoy some stunning views of Windmill Hill (in the West) and the Queen Elizabeth Country Park in the North.
Next stop is the lovely village of Chalton with it's church, thatched cottages & one of the oldest pubs in Hampshire - The Red Lion.
After an enjoyable (and long!) lunch by a roaring fire in the pub - a perfect tonic for a bitterly cold January day - I head back South to Finchdean along the Sussex Border Path.
Whilst the weather was perfect for the first two thirds of the walk with bright sunshine & blue skies, the clouds did eventually turn up and it became quite dark for the return journey.
I am sorry for the very bad picture quality for the short video footage taken inside the pub but the light was very low and as a result the camera image stabilization couldn't cope but I wanted to include it as it was such a cosy atmosphere!

Hi Dave, love your videos and this is another fantastic walk selected by you. The histories of the places you visit are very interesting. Incidentally, I visited the Red Lion in Chalton last November (i.e., 2021) and enjoyed a superb pint of HSB in the same room as you did, although not quite by the fire! You can't beat an experience like that - like a little remnant of 'Olde England'. You wouldn't be the first person to find it difficult to leave that place! 😄 Keep well, and I look forward to further walks with you and Logan.

I did a walk there a few years ago. The woods, I think, to the right of the church was covered in wild garlic. It was stunning. Great video. 👍

Well, I'm bingeing on your lovely videos and clicking away at thumbs up. Nice to see that many areas are relatively unchanged since I last visited. (and I don't mean London).

Hello Dave. I found that church in the middle of a field rather odd. Couldn’t see any houses with sight, and yet it appeared to be still used. When Logan emerged from that tunnel under the railway, I could see he was thinking “come on dad, put some effort into it “. I don’t how how you had the heart to drag Logan away from that lovely fire! I’ve heard of those pounds before, although I’ve never seen one.

I think Logan was very content in his "prime position" by the fire!

What a stunning winter's day walk. I have actually walked in that area myself but quite a while ago now. I loved the long winter shadows - expecially Logan's. Fly away Peter, fly away Paul - enter St Hubert! That church is fascinating and the ice house beyond a interesting relic of the country estate. Thanks again for another super video. Always so enjoyable!

Thanks Jean. When the sun does come out (!), you can certainly get some great walks in the Winter.

Hi Dave, I think you have read my mind! As I was watching this video I know that you often stop in a pub at the end of your walk, so I thought to myself, why don't you film inside the pubs too at the end. Our old country pubs are always so warm and cosy and full of history. And lo and behold, you DID! The history of each pub will always be very interesting if you get the chance! Cheers!!! Bob : )

Thanks Bob. Alas the battery had run out on my spotlight and so it was too dark in the pub for the Gopro to cope. I should have switched off the image stabilization as that would have improved the picture (albeit it would have been more "shaky") but hey ho ... hopefully the cozy ambience of the situation still came across on the film! Your idea about finishing the walks inside a pub is certainly a good one! Cheers.

@@DaveFord Aaw that's a shame about the battery Dave. If I am filming anything I carry two spare ones. The ambience inside our pubs always comes across, and what could be better than a nice pint or four sitting next to a roaring fire! Have you ever strolled down the lanes in Peasmarsh, Sussex? Paul McCartney lives there, but it's a helluva place to find, it took me about 2 days to find it! I once spent part of an evening next to his garden in St Johns Wood in London by pure chance. Have you been in the Jamaica Inn in Cornwall? I go in there a couple of times every year when I visit Cornwall. So much history in that place!

The thoughts on St Hubert's church and why it is in the middle of the field are that at one stage all the fields surrounding it would have been woodland and the church was at the centre of the village which as Dave says is long gone. But farming, housing and of course shipbuilding have taken their toll of the wood and it is now on its own in the field. Remember it took over 550 trees to build the Mary Rose so a wood doesn't last long when you have the sort of demands that Henry VIII made on them.
