This is another video in my series “ Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I visit the village of Hawkley (located 2 miles to the West of Liss & the A3 - just inside the South Downs National Park).
My 4 mile circular walk starts & finishes in Hawkley where I park my car at the village hall. Initially I have an explore of the church (with it's three magnificent ancient Yew trees), the pub (which has a ghost!) & the pretty village green before heading out along the Hangers Way towards Oakshott.
At that point I start climbing uphill along the side of Happersnaper Hanger and I come across an unusual sight half way up!
My route then takes me to the Shoulder of Mutton hill where I get to experience the first of two stunning views. The first view is to the South East with the South Downs in the distance and after stopping to relax & take it all in, I make a slight detour downhill to look at the Poets Stone (a memorial to local poet Edward Thomas who lost his life in the First World War).
I climb uphill to return to my original route & then take a second small detour to check out my second view at “Cobbets View” (a truly stunning vista looking North).
My return journey takes me down the appropriately named Down Hanger along sunken tracks and what must surely be some ancient drove roads back to my car and a well earned pint at the Hawkley Inn.
Although it was a very sunny day, parts of my walk were in the shade and as a result my Gopro camera did struggle a bit in the low light situations (including my visit inside the church).

Thank you Dave and Logan!😊 Fab Church! We felt the peace that was within it! What a great walk.... All those beautiful paths and bridleways!. Those views were amazing and the birdsong, soo uplifting! As soon as we heard you were taking the walk in September...We looked at each other and said... Blackberries for Logan and smiled!😊

Thank you Dave - A magnificent and scenic walk. My maternal grandparents Charles Hooper & Amelia Taylor were married at Hawkley in July 1909, and Amelia was born locally at Tubbs Farm in 1884. Fantastic to see inside Sts Peter & Paul church. A great sense of history possibly wandering in Amelia's footsteps. Sadly both were deceased before I was born. They lived in Sidlesham Sussex between 1912 & 1927.

What a lovely family connection you have with the village. You mention Sidlesham - I know it quite well - I lived in a bedsit there for a couple of years after I left home!

Another great walk with stunning views! I like the way you show us the route on OS map and also excerpts from old maps. A real shame about those abandoned cars littering the countryside though. I am a great fan on William Cobbett and his rural rides and used to do a walk that traced one of his journeys from Upwaltham to East Dean in West Sussex. Logan is a great asset posing by all the relevant landmarks!!

Thanks Jean. I find the old maps so interesting and enjoy trying to find out where "long gone" buildings used to be!

We have just completed this walk today. What a super walk with some stunning scenery and yet another quaint, charming Hampshire village. We started off early as although early September, due to be 30+ degrees today. I am glad that this walk had a lot of tree cover and shade as that first ascent up the hanger was quite a long and tiring ascent. Thankfully those 2 cars in your video have been removed. Loved the 2 old tractors. We didnt view the poets stone as it was so hot but will definately revisit. We have been walking quite a few of your walks Dave and you have taken us to villages and countryside that we would never has discovered otherwise. We have been surprised about these lovely hidden Hampshire villages and countryside. Thanks Dave & Logan and looking forward to the next one.

Another great blue sky video, ideal for another foggy ,cold winters day. I liked the two MF 35s ,I have restored tractors which were in a worse state than those two. Someone will take pity on them one day and restore them to as new condition. Thanks for another great video,

Thanks Colin. I hope that someone will "rescue" those tractors - they looked quite sad together!

Thank you both, what a beautiful area, shame about the abandoned vehicles, the Massey Ferguson 35s are quite collectable these days. The first tractor we had on our farm in the early 1970s.

Hello Dave and Logan, longtime no see! Ever so sorry, we have been here there and everywhere, struggling to keep up on YT and all the great videos! Very much in the market for a good Hampshire walk though, so looking forward to this, might help walk off some mincepies and Christmas cake! Already looks like an interesting area, catch you soon, Ceri and Kat ☕ ❤ 🗺 going to watch the rest as I type away this afternoon 😀

Very pretty church. What was on Logan’s mind as he watched you climb over that stile? I wonder if the police were aware of those abandoned cars. I’m surprised those cars weren’t set on fire. Yes Dave. There were. some great views opening out from the top of the hills. You’ve had some really good September weather for your walks this year. If I don’t see you next week. Happy Christmas to you and the family

Sad that the abandoned smashed up cars are still blocking our bridleway after nearly a year😥

Crumbs - that long? I should imagine that it would be very difficult (and dangerous) getting around that "blockage" on a horse. Such a shame as it is a lovely route up there.
