WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE at TITCHFIELD

This is another video in my series “Walks in Hampshire” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I take a 5 mile circular route from Titchfield, Hampshire (a lovely village situated to the South of Fareham).
I start off with a mini exploration of Titchfield itself, discovering it's history (it was once a port even though now it is nearly 2 miles inland) and admiring it's pretty buildings & pubs as well as St Peters Church - possibly the oldest church in Hampshire - which has inside, the amazing Wriothesley Monument.
I then head out into the countryside following a path alongside an old disused canal that takes me South to the shore. Along the way I have super views of watermeadows to my left & the canal to my right.
At the shore, I cross the dyke that cuts off the Meon estuary to get to a bird viewing platform that gives me great views of Cormorants and Oystercatchers on the nature reserve.
After some fun on the beach, Logan & I head West along the Solent Way before going North back towards Titchfield through a mixture of woodlands and open fields.
Once again the weather was glorious for this enchanting walk.

Love it when you say we'll soon be back in Titchfield, the pubs will be open by now and Logan licks his chops and then yours, proper little boozer he's turning out to be. Enjoy yourselves while you can. We miss our little Cairn terrier Laura who gave us 15 years of joy and licks.

Interesting, Dave, what you called a bulrush. I've always wondered exactly what they are, so I checked them out on Google. Here in the states we refer to them as "cattails". When we were children, we used to harvest them, dry them out, and then light them to make them smoke and deter mosquitoes. For some reason, we called them "punks" when they were dried and used this way. I have no idea why or where the term originated. They're also used here in dried flower arrangements. Loving all of the information you insert here and there to make your walks so interesting! Thank you!

Hi Dave, as a child in the late 1960s, my school sometimes used the Stubbington Activity Centre, near Titchfield. I distinctly remember being shown a brick (and possibly flint wall) near the centre of Titchfield that had rows of bones incorporated into it! I’ve searched the internet and can find only one vague reference to it in a newspaper article from 2002 which places it in West Street. I don’t know whether you’ve come upon it. Next time I visit my sister in Fareham I’ll search for it and undertake part of your walk too.

Hi Mark. No, I don't recall coming across the wall that you mention. Sounds insteresting!

I know it well, I used to live in West Street, Titchfield. The wall and it’s bones is in West Street at approximately no.42.

Hello Dave. Now that’s somewhere we must go when summer comes and the pubs are open again. Such a pretty walk alongside the old canal and river. I spent much of my childhood in East Meon and that holds fond memories for me. Have you done a walk around the village yet? It’s a charming place.
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 3 года назад
It is a lovely walk at Titchfield....but I guess it gets busy during the peak periods. East Meon is on my list of "walks to do" as well as Meonstoke.

I filmed mid Sept 2020. I recorded the scenes in the streets of Titchfield fairly early (before it got too busy!) but there were a fair few folk walking along the canal as it turned out to be a lovely sunny day. Thanks for watching.
