In this episode of my series “ Walks in Hampshire” I take a walk in & around the pretty village of Wonston which is located about 9 miles (by car)to the North of Winchester. My 5.5 mile figure of eight route starts with a wander through the village before heading out into the countryside.
Wonston is a delight to explore with the River Dever, the Holy Trinity Church, the award winning Wonston Arms pub as well as many pretty thatched cottages. My route takes me South following the Watercress Trail on farm tracks and well defined footpaths towards South Wonston.
I then take a detour to look at the site of the old Winchester racecourse - now open land but it was once one of the top horse racing tracks in England. I continue South along a disused railway line (the Didcot, Newbury & Southampton line) to check out what remains of Worthy Down Halt.
My homeward journey takes me along the sides of fields full of rape ,bursting with their golden yellow colour.
My final destination is indeed the Wonston Arms pub back at the village.

Thank you Dave and Logan for another beautiful walk! You certainly take the weather with you! We love the music you have with the walk!😊 Actually we love everything about your walks! They really are a tonic for our souls! We loved it at the end when Logan put his head up for his kiss! Beautiful!😊

Thanks Peter. I have done another "Behind the Scenes" clip (updating info on the equipment I use) but I just need decide when to add it on to the end of a normal video as it is only about 8 mins long.

Hi Dave. What a beautiful walk, I didn't burn any calories watching it through 😄 I love streams, churches and railways. Would that be near the Watercress Line steam railway 🤔 I've been on that a couple of times. Bet that pint went down a treat 😉

Thanks Linda. The Watercress Steam Railway certainly is at New Alresford (we did a video walk that started there). Yes, that pint was certainly just what was needed!

Apart from the oil seed rape in full bloom, I thought from the Facebook pictures that this walk was far more recent. It’s a lovely area any time of year, but extra special in the spring. I haven’t found the old railway track as yet, but I’d certainly like to take a look. Wonton is lovely, but South Wonsan is very built up. Perhaps the ‘Giddy Bridge’ originally consisted of a single plank and no handrail. Just a thought! Great walk.

Beautiful river at the start! And all the info about railway so interesting. Your videos are always so well researched! I was guessing the race course was an airfield so I was almost right!! Was Logan getting above his station at one point there??!! - just kidding.....

Lovely video. Thanks Dave - you certainly get to visit some interesting places. Have you done the Witchampton/Moor Crichel loop and Witchampton village is very beautiful with lots of timber framed properties. 😀

There's a Wetherspoons in Southampton called The Giddy Bridge, I wonder if they're related?
