WALKS IN HAMPSHIRE (& BERKSHIRE) from EAST WOODHAY TO WALBURY HILL & COMBE GIBBET

In this episode of my series “ Walks in Hampshire”, I take a 4.5 mile “circular” walk (with a big detour into Berkshire, bringing the total distance up to at least 8 miles!) from the village of East Woodhay to East End. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at St Martins Church in East Woodhay and after a quick look around the church itself, I head West along a quite road before heading South along a bridleway. The bridleway eventually becomes a footpath that goes up a very steep ridge (!).
The climb to the top of the ridge is worth it though for the views to the North. I join the Wayfarer's Way and head West towards Walbury Hill - the highest point in Berkshire.
The footpath goes through the middle of an Iron Age Hill Fort on top of Walbury Hill and I continue on to Gallows Down and the Combe Gibbet. The gibbet was initially erected in 1676 for the purpose of gibbeting the bodies of murderers George Broomham & Dorothy Newman. The gibbet also marks the start of the Test Way - a 44 miles long distance path that finishes at Eling near Southampton.
I then retrace my steps along Wayfarer's Way, past Pilot Hill (the highest point in Hampshire) until I come across the Brenda Parker Way (long distance path). This is where I head North and downhill to the village of East End.
After a short wander around East End, I follow the quiet country lane back to my car at East Woodhay.

Dave this was such a lovely walk that I had to finish watching this before I could go to sleep. Logan certainly made me smile to see him so happy. Give him a big hug from me and thank you for a wonderful walk and views . Spectacular is my word for it too. Take care Dave and Logan☀️😊

Dave, we did this walk today. Sun was shining and the views are spectacular from the ridge. We could not believe how far you can see from up there. We got up to Combe Gibbet and stopped for a cuppa. But....My god!!! That climb up the hill!! That is the steepest hill I have ever attempted! I am not a spring chicken and was nearly crawling helped by grassy tussocks. That really was a challenge. My partner and the dogs thought it was hilarious. But as I said before the views are worth the effort.

Some steep hills up that way. If you look south from the Gibbet you’ll see a whole woodland in the estate below that I planted with my brother in February. The old trees were lost to Ash dieback disease.

I have been to the gibet when visiting my brother in law and his family in Hungerford - and yes wonderful views. Have you thought of walking to Emsworth ? Great walk thanks Jeff.
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Jeff. I have been thinking about doing a series on a long distance path for a while (ie Serpent trail etc). Indeed I had gone as far as planning a walk on the Western section of the Sussex Border path which includes Emsworth near the start (I have done all the research). It is just finding the time to do it. I have done a number of sections of the Wayfarer's Walk now - I am getting to know it well. As to walking the entire route - well, maybe one day!

A village with no pub Dave? What a sad state of affairs! Not a part of the country I know, perhaps the lack of pub has something to do with that, but lovely scenery nonetheless. I've told you in the past, you need to harness the 4-wheel drive that is Logan when going uphill! Keep 'em coming.
@DaveFord

I certainly missed a trick by not putting Logan on a lead climbing that steep section!

I have been on the other end of the wayfarers way at Emsworth so really interesting to see where it ends up! Glad it was only the views that were breathtaking not the up and downing for camera placement! Loved the end with the mellifluous bells of the church. Did you get a look at the tomb or statues in church beyond organ? Thanks for another great video. The gibbett was the high point!!
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Jean. I didn't get too much time to look inside the church as there was a chap getting things ready for an event. According to an Ordnance Survey map, that steep path that I took to get up on to the ridge is marked as a bridleway .... it was tough enough for a human & a Whippet to get up, never mind a horse!

@@DaveFord Looking on website I think tomb may have been to Goddard family. Seeing as you must have climbed some of that hill twice I think you did a pretty good job - without crampons!!

I'm told that it's possible to see 4 or 5 different counties from the top of that hill, on a clear day. Having to watch using my smart phone as the Internet connection, due to Virgin Media being down AGAIN.
