Walksnail Fat shark recon HD Setup first impressions!😬

I’ve been watching the developments on this system since its early days! I got excited when i saw their 1S vtx that had on board recording and it looked very attractive to me. I was further excited seeing they were coming out with a VRX i can use on my sky zones!! But now that the pre orders are delayed i saw this “budget” goggle of the same kind i already had with the HD ZERO system that i actually liked to use so it was easy to get sucked into getting one! Well a few days in here are my thoughts on the Walksnail system :D I do like it but nothing is perfect. I certainly will have this hardware as a part of my fleet, but i still have a big space for HD ZERO. There isn’t one system that rules them all until we can combine the low latency of HD ZERO and the video quality and penetration of DJI. Knowing what i know about the protocols and how its achieved its a lot harder than we may think. But i feel with the development Walksnail has been showing they may eventually come out with a low latency lower quality setting that is suitable for racing.. hmmm… We will have to wait and see.. I’m thinking to get the dominator but ill take my time getting use to it and ill see how well the VRX gets along with my sky zones. Thanks for watching! I will have an update when i gain more experience with this system. But for now these goggles are quite usable and i’d recommend them for people who don’t have any goggles that can work with the VRX. The VRX is also limited to 60fps on pretty much all goggles for now so you’re not loosing much going with these 😎

Just tried mine yesterday and was very impressed by the quality of the link, even if you're flying behind you. Very nice box goggles for half the price of the dominator and, for me, a better visual comfort than goggles (that's why i choosed this box goggles instead of dominator or vrx on goggles ) . Personally i didn't feel the latency and the fps, it feels like i'm flying on analog with way better reception and image quality . 🤩

This is very great to hear 😎 the more i fly it the more i feel comfortable with the latency. And this is true for a lot of people that box goggles provide a better visual comfort and i find the same to be true for me, at least in this case! If i fly the sky zones after using this i can feel my eyes having to cross even tho i have the adjustments maxed out. I also find flying behind to be pretty good :D I’m definitely pleased with my purchase

Thank you for this 😎 you reminded me I need to make a reel of my work. I haven’t done too much as of yet but mostly music videos and one commercial that’s in the works that i can’t show yet unfortunately :( I’m still in the process of figuring it all out

The vrx will be about 10ms slower as the input lag of the hdmi port will add delay. The hdzero goggles support the 100fps mode but they would still be slower than the standard walksnail 100fps goggles.

You are very right and I should have made a note of this. There’s a debate on how much latency the HDMI really adds as I know it can vary with each device, but it’s definitely adding something. I remember the HDZERO fatshark goggles having a lower latency test than with the module and HDMI. I’m very tempted to just get the dominator for that ultimate experience But I’m gonna be testing more first 😎 thanks for watching

Thanks for posting this...Are you just making a conscious effort of staying away from DJI? Or is it just the direction your preference is taking you? I mean, it can't be a cost factor at this point, can it?

Great question! It’s not cost at all. I’m actually a fan of DJI but I have a few reasons why I’ve stayed away. One big one is the lack of 1s vtx and how I’d be locked into one big goggles. Of course a lot has changed now with the newer stuff. With Walksnail I love that we get HDMI out without any extra hardware so if there’s ever a situation that required live streaming/switching with other live cameras it’s possible. I’m always looking to get my drones as small and light as possible while still being usable for other applications other than just ripping around so the 1s vtx is what sold me really. I am however keeping an eye on DJI tho and that O3 air unit 😎 my use case for drones has changed a bit from the days of just ripping for fun. I was also aware that DJI didn’t play well with other systems when i go flying with other pilots on other systems

Are you using 2 18650 cells for power? I was hoping to do that but thought it would be to close to the 7v min. Great video thanks

You’re welcome 😎 Yes I did use 2 18650 and they worked ok but you don’t get the full benefit from them as you’d imagine. I ended up using a 3 cell 18650 that was better run time. But the 2 18650 do work well enough

This one i built with all different parts. The frame is from the Betafpv hx115 lr. A good BNF micro would be the Flywoo nano baby 2S with the Walksnail. But this one would be a 2s

Have you tried the Dominators? I'm trying to figure out if the experience is going to give more of a sitting towards the front of a movie in a theatre instead of sitting in the back like I get with the Recons

I actually have the Dominators now! It’s hard to describe but I know the feeling you speak of. I think it’s due to the fact that you can visually see light bounce outside the screen area in the recons which gives you that back of the theatre feel. but the dominators screen are actually slightly smaller when I compare! However you don’t get that light bounce at all with the dominators and you then experience as if you are at the front of the theatre. Your brain perception does that. The OLED screens are also incredible and get a lot brighter. I do feel the recons are more comfortable on my face but that’s very subjective and should be fixable with other face foam if you experience the same

@@DanielSingerX Does adding the little foam piece around the nose on the Recon goggles help with the light bouncing in the screen area or is the light really just coming from the screen itself?

@@StickJockeyFPV It makes a very slight difference but most of the light bounce is from the screen! However once your flying you don’t see the bouncing. It only shows up like when you have a black background and some bright text or contrast

@@DanielSingerX Thanks for the info! I got the Dominators and like them a lot. I noticed when I turn the fan switch to the left for higher fan power, I don't hear any change. Is yours like that too or did I get a faulty goggle?

@@StickJockeyFPV amazing! Glad I could help! It’s the very same for me with that fan switch not doing anything. I believe it doesn’t control the fan speed but moves a flap inside that diverts more air to the eyes. In my experience it doesn’t seem to make much difference and others have also noted this. So yours are fine 😎

Can u change the layout of the osd down the bottom either on the goggles or vtx. Looks very bunches up.

Oh the osd you see here isn’t what it looks like in the goggles at all! The actual recording has no OSD in it but you get a separate file that lets the player overlay the OSD and by default it plays back this big. U can have regular osd or if not using a flight controller this info can still be shown and it will be small writing at the very bottom of the screen

@@ronniequalls7217 yes for sure! But it’s the higher frame rate it doesn’t support. Its only 60fps but to be honest 60 is good enough if you don’t care too much for latency

Do you have any OSD at all? Mine all worked right away. You have your RX and TX wired up correctly? And beta flight settings for msp device to uart?

Did you ever had an issue with the sd card because mine has a lot of problem, it often says that there's no sd card, so i have to restart the recon, sometimes it works, sometimes not. Sometimes when i play dvr it fully freezes the recon and i have to disconnect it. I tried with 3 different sd cards and obviously they are properly formatted...

Oh that’s strange behaviour for sure! I haven’t had a single issue with my SD card. Did you try to format the card in the goggles? And did u get the goggles on the latest firmware? I’m on the latest beta and have had no issues what so ever

@@0oo033 that sucks :( maybe the connection to the sd card is intermittent and it’s a manufacturer issue. Are the sd cards you tried different brands? I’ve had similar issues with bad sd cards but I know u tried a few. I actually formatted my card on my Mac as EXFAT because the format from the goggles wouldn’t show up on the Mac. Maybe try formatting on the computer as exfat and see? I always like to try everything before sending anything back. But it does more seem to be a product defect

@@DanielSingerX hi, i just received a new sd (for a fourth try😅) formated in exfat as you recommend (the others where in fat32 and format again in the recon) and it seems to work well now. I still don't know why it worked randomly with the other cards, which are ok with other devices...

I had problems with the SD card slot on the recon hd would show SD id record and mid flight it'd turn to no SD.... Could not record flights via SD in goggles but could do fw updates no problem.....I return them after a week or so and was sent a brand new pair that is still sitting on my shelf almost two months after arrival wrapped in plastic collecting dust while I've been using my VRX....

Oh yes I had problems updating also and took me a while to figure it out! I think the vex is what took me a while to figure out because if its on an older version you'll have to rename the new file for it to update or just update to the next one up and then the new one and it will work, the goggles I just didn't see the file on Fatshark site and I didn't find the mini gnd file for it, here's a link where I got the latest beta drive.google.com/drive/folders/1W7xjqIO_7rqh56bAxy8qKqzrjrwsiw67

@@OVERKILLFPV I actually haven’t had this happen! I did however find this problem on the HDzero version! It can be that the goggles aren’t detecting the right voltage and think you’re using a battery with different cell count

U press the quad first then goggles! I guess it could work the other way if you are fast enough. Remember it’s a very short press of the binding buttons. If you hold it it won’t work. Good luck 😎 and happy flying

Hi do you mean OSD? Can you get into the menu on the recon? If The OSD doesn’t work it’s a problem on the flight controller. If you can’t get into the menu on the goggles u may have a faulty menu button as it should just work with a press

@@pierrecrocquefer5420 haha got ya! Well it’s not the recon but something with the configuration from betaflight. U shouldn’t have to touch any thing in the menu of the goggles. Once the uart is set in betaflight it should just work! Check the version of betaflight your using and the easiest way is to use the preset in betaflight for walksnail OSD and somewhere in there u should have a selection for what uart number u attached it to then select the pick and save. It’s been hit and miss for me too getting it to work. Also make sure the rx and tx is wired correctly.

@@DanielSingerX yeah if you just look up the goggles the all the firmware is right there even the sky firmware. I have to reflash my tiny whoop though because the new firmware doesn’t have you download different versions if you already had 28…. Whatever on it. So now my tiny whoop says it can do 700mw lol 😂. Do you know how to reflash the vtx BTW?

@@BoondockStryker I’m glad fatshark finally put the firmware on their site! I just saw it 🥳 but it’s normal that the 1s vtx will show that it goes to 700 and above on the menu but in reality it caps off at 350mw. Once u go above 200 in the menu the vtx just stops at 350 but doesn’t show it on screen. U should be able to re flash the vtx just as normal but I don’t think you can go to a lower version of the firmware 🤔 but I’d recommend finding the latest beta version as it’s got a much better adjustment for the camera dynamic range especially for indoor flying.
