Might be a good opportunity for Song of the south (1946) on 4K

This is absolutely a testing of the market. This could be a floodgate event and Wall-E is just a small face of it. Disney knows their market for consumer physical media purchases (taking marvel out of this) is either the kid's market and the collector's market. 90% of the kid's market went to streaming, so what's left is the collector's market. I own plenty from Disney movie club and I don't think they really know how to do it the best in today's current market. Naturally make a partnership with a group like Criterion that will do it right it today. Wall-E is a really good generic title that fits both the billing of a film of merit within art and history as well as a test title that a normal consumer would jump on, or the third subgroup, the Disneylandia fanbase. I think from here easy guess would be like Fantasia but really my guess is also they' might do some archival Disney stuff. Like for example Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color or the Disney company's efforts of training videos made for WW2. They might dabble with a few animated classics here or there, but really I think Wall-E is really just a test and an act of good faith so Criterion could get more of the Disney's deep dive stuff.

Omg I forgot about their cursed WW2 training vids! If those ever see the light of day in a modern physical release, Criterion should surely be the ones handling those! I completely agree with your thoughts, this’s a very elaborate marketing test.

Such a great video bill!! Much more entertaining and informative than my knee-jerk reaction video lol Ratatouille would be my number #1 next pixar film in line to get the criterion treatment. But the other two I’d love to see is a toy story box set and Up. But I swear, a Morbius criterion is inevitable. idc the price. Write any number on this check and I will pay it.

The fact that they only have 3 animated films is pretty disheartening. I only hope that this’s a resurgence of artful animated films

i personally think Wall-E was a really good choice for Criterion to choose, especially since there's such a deeper meaning to the movie. you can also see wall-e as being an art form with the thought that Wall-E is a Pixar film with the longest sustained stretch without dialogue. idk, i suppose i *am* slightly biased, since it *is* one of my favorite pixar movies...

In terms of Disney, I'd elect Fantasia and The Imagineering Story to be released next, as it seems this release is more a long-overdue ode to Pixar animation. These other two could function similarly. Overall animation, I'd elect Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Persepolisis, It's Such a Beautiful Day, Kiki's Delivery Service, The Prince of Egypt, Rango, Son of the White Mare, Allegro non-Tropo, Millennium Actress, Wonder Egg Priority, Over the Garden Wall, Bee and Puppycat, So much good animation out there Criterion could be making serious bank on a booming animation fanbase and appeasing critics and snobs at the same time. History truly has the greatest crossovers.

I think a Toy Story boxset would make the most sense, but I could totally see a world in which Soul, Ratatouille, or Coco comes to the Collection. Those seem like the most obvious ones, especially since it's the first Pixar film to come to the Collection. Could totally see them doing 3 more individual releases and a big Toy Story boxset to finish off the deal.

Toy Story makes sense since it was the first feature length 3D animated film. I would also like to see Up, Monsters Inc, Ratatouille, and Finding Nemo join but they should stop after that. maybe consider a few Disney classics as well. I don't think that this will change how the criterion collection picks their films though.

Disney won’t make a new Fantasia for theaters, but maybe there’s a slight possibility of one getting made for Disney+ with a Criterion physical release at the same time.

I was suprised to see email with WALL-E, but it makes sense. It's amazing movie with great message, it was a flick above other flicks. But I browsed the Pixar filmography and I am not sure. Maybe UP, because of the intro that is amazing. But apart from that maybe "Turning Red", cause it is saying something other movies didn't say and that's important. From Disney, I think Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 is a no-brainer kinda. Also I am thinking maybe the very oldest ones? Like "Snow White" or "Alice in Wonderland"? I also think, not exacty from Disney Studios, but owned by them is "Roger Rabbit" and "Nightmare Before Christmas" which would fit in the collection nicely. Also from the movies that are way better than most humans remember - The Goofy Movie.

If I had to pick other Pixar films to join the Criterion Collection, I'd argue the original Toy Story, Ratatouille, and Inside Out. For actual Disney animated canon only two come to mind: Snow White and Fantasia given what both films represent. I don't think Disney getting in is like, the "death of cinema" or anything, in fact I welcome Wall-E joining! I just feel like it still needs an air of exclusivity should more join.

I'm under the impression that criterion releases films that don't have a physical release (or atleast a bluray) so I'm surprised that wall-e was released by criterion in that regard. Wall-e already has a 4K by disney also. So as much as I would love for criterion to release stuff like ghibli or Satoshi kon or other animated movies, I just don't think it's likely cause those are own by major studios that do their own physical release. Shout/Gkids are doing ghibli, and most animated movies I've noticed are already owned by big studios like Disney and DreamWorks.

@@donsimpsonshead8809 i hear you. I don’t know if its an exception that criterion has a channel. So they have digital versions of their films out there to watch. I don't think this is a good thing. Even if the movie contains a good message. Once Disney is involved, certain things will turn to shit. Every criterion has this written on the back of the cases "The Criterion Collection, a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films, presents" Not sure this is a good move by Criterion.
