Jeff visits the world-famous Wall Drug Store in the tiny hamlet of Wall, South Dakota which is a fascinating place outside of the Badlands.
Jeff will also visit the nearby graves of Ted and Dorothy Hustead who founded the tourist attraction during the dark days of the Great Depression.

We spent a month in Box Elder, in 2014. Wall Drug was a definite stop on one of our many day drives. There was a working phone booth in front, and I filmed, with permission, two guys in their early 20s inspecting the booth, as they'd never seen one in person before

Thank you, Jeff! That was very interesting. My wife and I drove past the exit for Wall Drug back in 2006 on our way to Wyoming and Yellowstone National Park. We were in a rush so we didn't stop. As I look back upon that trip, I wish we would have stopped there. Wall Drug is a great American historic attraction. Just think, back in the 30's travelers didn't have bottled water, so an offer of free ice water was a big draw for Wall Drug. Thanks Jeff and Sarah! 🇺🇲🚜👍

Thanks for the video. It brings back many memories. My family was from there. My grandmother remembered when the Husteads came to town. She worked there as well as my mother, aunt and numerous of my cousins. I went back there a few years as a teenager and worked for Ted, Dorothy, Bill and Rick as well. The reason many things were closed when you were there was that college was back in session. The Husteads hire a bunch of college kids from all over the US so the have summer jobs to help get them through college. They have dorms for them to live in all over town. The pay wasn’t amazing but wasn’t bad either. At winter break you usually got a really nice bonus, just in time to help with Spring semester of college. To answer your question Bill was a Pharmacist as well as Ted. The cowboy engraved on his stone is because it he was one. He belonged to a cowboy group called the Buckaroos with a couple of my uncles. In the boot store at the Wall Drug there used to be all of Bill’s old worn out boots.

Zoltar sounds Russian! Thanks Jeff for showing us this drug store. It reminds me of Dooleys Hardware Mart on Long Beach Blvd. in Long Beach, CA during the 1960s and 1970s. I noticed that you had visited there one month ago and then inside that one shop there was a Christmas tree displayed. I guess in the midwest they also do the same thing they do out here in California; start Christmas early. I noticed with that tank in World War II it was a knocked out Tiger tank and someone put a Wall Drug sign on it.

I was haunted by the grave of the young Hustead boy so I had to look to see what happened to him. Here is text from the Huron (SD) Daily Plainsman newspaper: "Wall Man Dies. (Wall) A Jon Patrick Hustead 21, Wall, was killed early Saturday in a one vehicle rollover 13 miles southeast of Wall. The accident occurred when a pickup truck went out of control on a gravel road and rolled about 2 45 am. Saturday." So sad he died so young and missed out on the rest of his life. He was born just a year before I was. I visited in the late 60s before I-90 was finished. I believe the highway that traveled through South Dakota in this place was US Highway 16. I never really cared for Wall Drug. I didn't like that the cowboys were made to look so stupid. Some of it was kind of nice and I, like you, was reminded of Knotts Berry Farm.
@jbenziggy
@jbenziggy 2 года назад
Wow, thanks for the details. I tried to look up his cause of death but couldn't find anything. I figured that he was killed in a car crash because of his age. I had a dear cousin who I looked up to and he was killed in a similar crash in 1972 or 1973. He was a teenager and going way too fast for the rain slick road. Sad that youth can often be victims of their own lack of common sense and feelings of invincibility.

I’m from Greybull and found it odd there was a sign so far away. Last I was at Wall Drug was 2021 and I’m glad we stopped in. However, I felt it was a very oversold tourist attraction. I will stop again if passing by but probably wouldn’t go there specifically.

That was a great video, I have never been there, but my Wife has many times as a child on family vacation. Plan to visit there when the gas prices go down or I inherit an oil well. We always have a preconceived notion that places we visit as a child or young adult will always remain the same, but only in our memories. Jeff and Sarah you do a wonderful job restoring precious memories for your viewers and new ones for those of us that will probably not be able to visit these historical sites. Thank You Ron and Cindra

Hi Ron and Cindra, yes sometimes we have romanticized memories of things from our childhood. For example, Knott's Berry Farm and Disneyland hold some fantastic memories for me but going now seems a lot less fun, mostly because of cost and crowds. When I've tried to reproduce the joy of visiting a place the second time sometimes it falls a bit flat. I guess that's what happens when you reach your 60's. LOL Thanks and blessings to you both! And happy travels if you ever get that oil well. FYI the gas prices in SD are a lot nicer than California!

I've always wanted to stop, but it's never on my route to/from North Dakota, from either Albuquerque, or California. Looks a lot like Virginia City!---My Dad's nickname was OOP, taken from the comic strip!---Thanx so much for this stop, it's likely I'll never get there myself.

Thanks for the tour! I’m 67 and live in NJ but was there in 1969 as a 13 year old on a trip to visit a friend I had met at camp the year before. We drove across the state, from their home in Sioux Falls to visit Rapid City for a few days and stopped at Wall Drugs. I really had no memory of the place until you walked in and I recognized the hallway with shops on either side! I look forward to June 2024 when my hubby and I will be taking a tour of some of those sights I recall as a 13 year old. It will be interesting to see how my perspective and the scenery has changed in the past 50 plus years.

Jeff, been there in 1967, on our way to California. I also recall the old coin operated mechanical animals but remember Zoltar. We also stopped at Mount Rushmore, Cody National Park & the newly started Crazy Horse tribute. The arm stretched out was what we saw. American Bison abounded. Nice memories & Wall Drug Store was fun. Thanks & blessings.

I was there in 1972 & then again in 2006. After driving mile after mile of nothing but prairie grass & old buffalo wallows, I was sucked in by the billboards advertising Wall Drug practically every mile or so advertising 5¢ coffee, fudge, moccasins, food, cowboy hats, etc. After seeing the billboards for what seemed like hours, I felt like I just had to stop. Was not disappointed & it was a refreshing break from driving on a hot, sticky day. The place hadn't changed much 34 years later either.

I'm Jackie, I've been watching your videos for 4 years, but missed the last few years, Normally, I watch on TV w/ apple device which doesn't let me comment. Today I had to flea bomb the house then watch on my computer while waiting in the garage. I lived in Mariposa from 1987 to 2005 and enjoy your travels to places I remember, but most never been to. Thanks

Thanks for the Video! You do a great job! I'm a lifetime resident of South Dakota. I never though of visiting the Husteads Graves? Wall Drug is a consumate part of a Journey to, or from, the Black Hills.

Glad to see a “Zoltar”. Makes me want to make a wish that I was “Big”! In the late 70”s they offered free breakfast to military members in uniform along with free coffee. There were several missle silos in the area. Ellsworth AFB is just west of Wall Drug..about 50 miles…they have a GREAT Air Museum that’s right outside the main gate. Cheers

Jeff - I just found this story as I was going back thru the youtube's I missed while on vacation,. I rode my Honda 450 thru S. Dakota back in 1972 but missed this spot. Did you get me a couple of the flat pennies ? They must have a machine or two around the grounds. I have one book full but don't travel as much any more.' As old as I am now I don't fall for buying any of the dust catchers but always look for the penny machine.

Thank you for this thoughtful thorough tour. It took me to their website since I've never traveled. I'm in Queens NY 1,667 miles away or 1 day and 1hour away. I wish you mentioned who owns it now. I will research it

Hello Jed glad to see your doing well! Where was Sara? Not use to seeing you without her! I’ve been to walls drugs back in 1983 when I was about 12 years old. I’m 50 yo now it’s been awhile ago since I’ve been there. I have memories of Walls Drug I do remember getting a cold mug of homemade root beer. I recognized a few things in your video but not much. Thanks for another great video. Stay safe stay healthy

The last time I was in South Dakota we drove by Wall Drug but didn't stop as it was so crowded. Our timing was bad as it was too close to the Sturgis Rally. My favorite place to visit in the area is Custer State Park in the Black Hills. The Buffalo Round Up is just a couple of weeks away. I always wanted to see that. Maybe next year. If you make it as far as northwest Iowa there's a wonderful family owned movie theatre in Sibley, Iowa called the Max Theater. It is definitely worth a visit!

I was there years ago as a teenager. A veryb small place but loved it. My husband & I went there in 2014. Was nice but the way I fee its like everything else today tooo much of a tourist trap. But loved your video. I think from watching it we missed few things. But was so crowded the summer we were there in 2014. As always great job done.

Hello Jeff and Sarah. I’m just now getting caught up on your road trip. At 16:16 you had a great pun and didn’t catch it. While standing in the cemetery you said “there was not a soul in here but us.” Lol. I’ve never been to Walls but it’s on my list. Great job as always. Safe travels.
