There used to be Wall Drug signs all over the place, even in other states. In fact During WWII there were Wall Drug signs posted by U.S. soldiers in Europe.
Yep there have even been Wall Drug signs posted at the South Pole several different times. If I'm not mistaken there has been at least one Wall Drug Sign posted on every continent.
I lived in South Dakota, specifically the Black Hills, for about 12 years. In Custer County, in a small town called Pringle for a while, and then Rapid City. Absolutely beautiful part of the country.
I lived right by Pringle, in Hot Springs! I went there in 1985 from sw Oklahoma to get my children a Real education! I loved every single minute! But I came back home for now...
@@mindynewton2967 we almost bought a home in Hot Springs. My husband is from Pine Ridge and it wasn't far from there. We ended up moving to Rapid. Crazy.
I am wondering what it's like if you are someone who regularly gets household goods ordered and shipped to kind of remote regions in your state. Does this come out to be a hassle if you don't necessarily get goods at grocery stores either?
Buffalo's are fun. Some are wild. Some in parks. Some owned in ranches and farms. People forget these bulls have horns, and have no problem running you down. And mistake that you're in their territory.
Moved to South Dakota (Chamberlain) in fall of 2009, from Rockford, IL. Love it here, lower taxes, fewer people trying to run your life. Constitutional Carry, etc.
HMMM I don`t know a about SD bing better then ND. How ever i do agree with you wildlife and peoples property that a good way to go to jail or get your self killed really fast.
Hey!! Could you tell me the best cities (friendliest, affordable, safe, attractive places to live...) I am 63 years old and conservative. Where are great places for a quiet, kind person with 2 dogs to live?? Thanks if you can help!! I also hope that your cities do not get overrun, if you know what I mean!! I love gardening, nature, cooking, wild life... But ( yikes!) I am getting old!
I have also lived in South Dakota pretty much my whole life, I’m 16 and I agree everything he said is true especially the capital Pierre on its pronunciation. I live in Aberdeen and it is the third biggest town after rapid city and Sioux Falls. Locals in Aberdeen are the friendliest people ever.
Another fun fact. The author of the wizard of oz lived in Aberdeen SD. And Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of little house on the prairie, called De Smet SD home as well!
My parents moved to Rapid City from Wyoming when I was in my freshman year of college. So, I spent three summers there. Easily the three best summers of my life. I loved living in the Black Hills. So much to see and do. And I also had a fun job at Reptile Gardens, so that was pretty great too.
I laughed so hard when you mentioned the weather forecast. It's so true! You can start the day with your winter coat and end in shorts some days depending on the season. I would say the forecast is more like a loose guideline for what you may encounter.
no that's what Michigan people say!! and a other thing, we dont see sun!!! always clouds in front of the sun!! we count sunny clear days here! when I'm in Sioux Falls to visit my sister I'm always looking at the sky, it's always clear blue every day its amazing!!
There is one wall drug sign per person in South Dakota. Just spitting facts here. I went there is 2020. Deadwood and Keystone are some of the coolest towns I have ever been too.
@Lalate Beautifully said, I tell my folks these words everyday. good to save money but most people don't understand the market moves and tend to be misled in facts like this and always depend on money in the bank.
Thank you Wolters world for showing off my wonderful state of South Dakota! We have a lot to offer for every season. I live a state full of great people thank you for showcasing that
As a kid in Michigan, I was fascinated with the West, So was delighted when my folks decided to take us kids on a vacation road trip to Yellowstone in the summer of 1955! The very first time I saw the authentic 'West' was visiting South Dakota on the way. That was definitely a highlight of my youth, and I remember with pleasure seeing the beauty of the Badlands, the grandeur of Mount Rushmore, the impressive Corn Palace & Wall Drug Store, let alone the gorgeous landscape like I'd never seen before! Since then, I've visited a dozen countries, lived in Europe, been all over the 'Lower 48', lived in 5 states, and have been a California resident (mostly) since the '60's; yet SD remains special in my memories!
I remember when I visited Wall Drug. It was the greatest thing I had ever seen. It completely changed my life. I basked in the glory of its beautiful 50 cent coffee. Forget Wall Street. Wall Drug is where it’s at.
I’ve lived in South Dakota my entire life. They have wall drug signs literally all over the country- famous for its free ice water. They could be found in the most unlikely places such as Shanghai. There have been signs in India, Africa, Vietnam and even the South Pole. I’d say the most fun part of our state is the black hills, ( rapid city, sturgis, deadwood, wall drug, keystone. ) we have tons of small mining-now turned ghost towns. Of course there’s also Mount Rushmore and crazy bourse monuments as well. Tons of caves to explore. South Dakota is also home to the beautiful fairburn agates (our state gemstone) most people are friendly here, our state had very low crime rates, cost of living is rather reasonable. What’s not to love? And some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever see.
Kolaches! Yes! Also, in Rapid City the Firehouse Brewpub was exceptional! And Custer has a great little museum worth checking out and of course Jewel Cave and Wind Cave were great! (Along with the larger attractions.) Great review as usual!
The Navy has taken me from Box Elder, SD to Pensacola, FL and I have found a great little donut shop with GREAT Kolaches! Spicy jalapeno sausage in the middle!
In World War II, South Dakota service personnel nailed up Wall Drug distance signs in the most unlikely places. ''Wall Drugs, 9,066 miles,'' read an arrow sign in Shanghai. There have been signs in India, Africa, Vietnam and even the South Pole.
You forgot that we have the best pheasant hunting in the world. I live in a sportman's paradise. You can hunt deer, antelope, elk, coyote, prairie dogs, ducks, geese, fishing for walleye, small mouth bass, and also the best burgers and Indian tacos. So much to see, taste, and do. Not to mentioned our South Dakota certified grass feed beef...best in the country if you're a carnivore.
I grew up in SD and you did a great job of telling people how great the state is! Btw, I grew up in the Northeast corner...the Lake region. We have a ton of hunting and fishing.
I currently live in South Dakota, west river. There is some wonderful history and geology out here. Wonderful landscapes, a lot of really great places for hiking and photography. There are also lots of little museums all over the place so be sure to check those out. Including fossil sites! South Dakota has some rich paleontological history including mammoths, T. rex(don't talk about SUE. Just trust me on this), Triceratops, and marine reptiles from the Western Interior Seaway that covered a fair amount of the state back at the end of the Mesozoic. And there is a lot of history in Deadwood especially and they really love their history. I haven't been up to Deadwood much personally but from when I have been, it is a beautiful town with a rich history. They love their historical outlaws. Also, support local businesses including native American businesses. They make some really great stuff and have a lot of really interesting history and culture as well.
I have lived in several states now and now I’m in a more remote part of South Dakota and it has to be one of my favorite states, I love the land, the people, and the history. The only down side is the unpredictable and severe weather we get, currently where I’m at the wind is gusting at 60 mph and it has been like that for a day now and will continue to blow for two more days. We also get a lot of hail and wild blizzards.
Pretty good review on my home state. One thing I might add is "the opener" on the third Saturday in October. Pheasant hunting has been a longtime tradition for residents and many out of state pheasant hunters.
Definitely listen to that last don't. I was driving through Spearfish Canyon, one minute it was sunny the next it was hailing and the area was under a tornado warning.
Fun fact: Spearfish canyon holds a world record for fastest temperature change. In January 1943, the temperature went from -4 degrees F to 45 degrees F in two minutes. It had something to do with a strong wind I think.
@@randyhaight7202 yeah it was the wind shift. I love talking bout that when I'm talking bout south dakota. "Our weather is extremely bipolar here in such in such state". Yeah well did the temperature ever jump 49 degrees in 2 mins. No didn't think so south dakota holds king to that title.
We visited SD in August oh 1998 I do believe and we had on t-shirts and shorts and even swam that evening. We woke up in the middle of the night and it was snowing like crazy. It was awesome.
I’m a South Dakota native. I’ve lived here all my life except for a 6 1/2 year stint in Texas (I’d live there again if I couldn’t live here...love that state!). Having said that, there’s sooo much stuff he missed...we have some pretty cool museums, Ellsworth Air Force Base ( right next to Rapid City) has a great museum, plus an air show every year...which is fabulous! Spearfish is a very pretty town and home to Black Hills State College. They also have Festival in the Park (Spearfish park is gorgeous!! Great play and picnic area, plus it’s right next to Spearfish Creek, which is a beautiful creek...it’s easily accessible for wading and fishing). Custer State Park has many lakes, lodges and campgrounds that are absolutely beautiful (located in the black hills). And great restaurants. Try the Alpine Inn in Hill City...it’s an interesting place to eat! There’s also the now defunct gold mines that’s worth checking out as far as historical interests go. We have ski slopes close to the Deadwood-Lead area. We have rodeos and tons of other stuff to do! Also lots of snowmobiling... I could go on and on...but I won’t! Give it some thought to vacation here. We love tourists and I think you’ll find a lot of unknown hidden treasures in this beautiful state!! If you decide to move here, welcome, put please leave your liberal voting at home! We’re a great free state because we value our freedoms and fiercely protect them !,
Yep, don’t move here & vote for the same stuff that turned your state into a dangerous overtaxed craphole. Neighbors are from Cali & had a Biden lawn sign 😡. If you don’t like our governor you probably won’t like it here. BTW it regularly gets to -20 in the winter
@@sledawgpilot I don't understand why you think it is appropriate to tell people how they should vote. People should vote however they god damn want wherever they live for any reason. Furthermore most people don't move because their state is a dangerous overtaxed craphole. I moved to Rapid City from California because I don't like it there but not because it is a craphole. Noem is trash governor too. I am fully libtarded as you might say and I ain't gonna vote for the people you do.
@@brycemcdermaid7995 what didn’t you like about California that made you move? Beautiful mountains, deserts, seashores? Why not stay if it’s beautiful and you fit in with the political climate?
But I want to take a selfie with a buffalo............ not seen one of those monsters up close was enough for me and I was in a 18 passenger van at the time. I'm glad to say my home state has more guns than it has people in it.
@Radio Hurricane honestly you need to quit stereotyping its disgusting and disrespectful just keep your opinions to yourself because it really makes you look like a racist and an ignorant person.
Love going to South Dakota! Hubby, Dachshund and I were there this past Sept! It was our first time going in the Wall Drug and my first time seeing the Badlands! It was awesome! Will have to check out the Corn Palace next time, never heard of that, and the East and West River divided. Glad I ran into this video.
The very best thing about South Dakota is the view of the sky durring tornado season. Those massive super cells are spectacular especially when your driving toward them. The night sky is amazing but you need to be away from any city lights so there's no obstructions to the view.
Went through the area, Wall Drug, Deadwood, Crazy Horse all that. Had a great time. Just a block from Main St in Deadwood watched a doe tip toe across a church parking lot in mid day.
Thanks for the info. I was from Cherokee, IA. I went to USD from 1979-83. A friend of mine was from a family that loved fast cars and speedboats. He took me to Yankton Lake with their boat. Great time. I later worked at CitiBank in Sioux Falls processing card applications. There were a lot of pretty gals there!
I’m from Oldham England checking the weather out I noticed there’s an Oldham in South Dakota so thought I’d check out South Dakota - it looks brilliant 👍👍
My sister and I just got back from a random impulse weekend trip to SD. We didn't come close to doing everything we wanted to. We totally underestimated how much stuff there was to do. One thing we learned, I-90 has huge expanses where there are no facilities. So take advantage of them when you see them.
Don't forget to drink water - the dry air gets you and you don't even know it... was my favorite vacation ever!! so much to see and coming from the midatlantic - such a change.
The weather in the Black Hills is very volatile. It can be in the 50s daytime high in July, or hot as hell. Storms are unpredictable, but July and August are usually more stable with drier weather. A few years ago, we encountered 2 inches of pea sized hail that completely covered the roads in areas in the middle of the summer. It looked like smoking snow from the sublimation. Another tip, get that LDW insurance from the car rental place. Whether it's the hail or the deer, chances are good something will get the car.
Stop in the Tyndale bakery for " real German baking"...Off HWY 50...Also nice VA memorial with all Bon Homme County Combat Veterans..( My Dad's name is on it..Korea)
I was born and raised in the very Southeastern part of SD and I like to call the state a old traditional state and that you are better off looking out the window for the weather.
Safety👉You should do a video on the native gangs, the SD mafia, human trafficking, and the drug and alcohol concerns. Not trying to scare folks off, but it’s always good to know the extreme bad’s of the place you’re visiting. I’d want to know first where NOT to go. I’ve experienced one of the worsts SD can offer, while I was traveling. It was so awesome up until that particular moment. So keeping your head on a swivel and knowing the dangers around you so that you can ENJOY the rest, is a must!
@@agentwade why do you have to make it negative wtf your the second person on here stereotyping just keep your opinion to yourself also you do know people can get robbed no matter where you are in South Dakota right?
@@user-zu2bw7ig5v Lmao what am I supposed to be trying? You can be held at gun point and be robbed or killed anywhere that’s my point because it’s true however you claiming “it’s a higher chance on the reservation” is ignorant and disgusting because that’s YOUR opinion not anyone else’s.
South Dakota the week before Memorial Day is Amazing, Business's start Opening, People are excited and Joyful to be back in season, its not crowded, so more options to do stuff
The western part of SD is one of the nicest area's in the U.S. to visit especially if you like the great outdoors. There are five National Park Service Units within an hour of Rapid City. I also recommend the stunning hillside cemetery Mount Moriah which is "above" Deadwood. This is where Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane are buried and has excellent views of Deadwood and the whole area. If you play poker in Deadwood hope that you never get aces and eights😁.
I've visited South Dakota many times, and I must say that spearfish canyon is my favorite place in SD. There is a lot to check out in the western part of the state.
Reminds me of this amazing jeopardy??? clip where a man answers Pierre and the host goes ‘incorrect it’s Pee-Air’ and then they had to correct the host
I actually live in South Dakota. Don't forget to visit Rapid City. They offer a lot like Watiki Indoor Waterpark, ellsworth air and space museum, the journey museum and more
Heh Mark, thanks for these US videos as it is giving me more ideas for roadtrips etc.It looks beautiful there. Any chance you could do some videos on the pacific northwest & the southern east coast, GA & the Carolinas please. I am a former BA crewmember so have seen only the major cities on our short layovers( 24 hours) so would love to get to see all that i have not. Regards to Joycelene and stay safe & healthy.Seán.
The weather, yes it can be quite varied. A couple of the widest swings in temperature records are here in the Black Hills and nearby. When the wife and I were visiting, before we moved here, went to Mt Rushmore on 6 June. Couldn't see the faces for the snow! I've use my lawn mower and snow blower in the same week.
My husband and I just moved here in South Dakota, 35 mins. away from Mt. Rushmore, it is beautiful. Also in Custer National Park you will see a hundreds of Buffalo.
You can go to centerville South Dakota and go to their bakery, their donuts are wonderful, I wish I was close or someone bring a donut from centerville SD.
Don’t forget, when you are west river to go to Hot Springs and the Mammoth dig and museum - really interesting! Also, Sioux Falls is a city (our biggest city!) so don’t call it a town to the locals 😉
Love your videos! We haven't explored much of the states, but seeing those shots of the Badlands makes us want to!! Glad you pointed out more than just Mt. Rushmore! haha
