I bought to replace my regular Blu-ray. I was glad to spend the money, get the extras, packaging, and support Disney letting Boutique studios to their catalog. So many movies, especially in their 20th Century Fox, that they can let other do the work and take the financial risk of physical media releases.

My only criticism is the slip case cover. I wish Criterion would make theirs in heavy cardboard like Arrow and Eureka have been doing. It makes for a more premium looking and feeling package.

Andrew Stanton actually made TWO savory films during his time at CalArts, Somewhere in the Arctic. It was released alongside A Story in Pixar Short Films Collection Vol. 2, but I was honestly really shocked to not see it on this set. Probably because that short contains the song My Girl by The Temptations, and that might’ve been a licensing hurdle.

Really excited for the potential 4k-releases we will see from this deal between Disney and Criterion. I really really really hope we will see a great special edition of Aliens. Think how awesome that would be with a brand new Dolby Atmos track. I would pay BIG BUCKS for a special collectors edition of Aliens 4K with a bust or something similar.

I loved this disk. I loved the Vision encoding- that additional color detail made pretty much every scene pop off my screen (the space flight to the Axiom, the boat explosions are true highlights). And I didn't mind Presto's exclusion as I believe that was because this is a release tailor made to focus on the film and its director.

I hope they do my favorite Disney film the 1967 Jungle Book in full frame. The last few releases have been cropped (Diamond Edition Blu Ray and Platinum Edition DVD which I own.) I believe the last full screen format edition was a limited edition 1999 set as far as my research online. If it hits 4K/Criterion, I hope they can provide both.

This is probably too specific to become a reality, but I hope this opens the door for a Criterion release of the original film version of Toy Story. Minor changes were made over the years to the film, but I really miss the look of the original film master; deeper colors and slight grain structure. We only saw this version on Laserdisc and VHS. The early DVD versions were digital transfers of the original files, which had more crisp edges, but drab colors. Every version post 2010 is a new render of the film.

One of my childhood films right next to Ratatouille here. Once I heard this was getting a Criterion release, I wanted it so badly. I managed to get mine from Amazon, but as you can guess, they did NOT package this good. They put it in one of their crummy plastic bags to ship over rather than a box with bubble wrap. Just shows whoever is packing stuff like this doesn't care how safw it comes in, so my copy unfortunately has a lot of dents on the corners and even a couple edges. Would've gotten my copy from B&N if they had one left to spare and I only found out after they closed on the last day of the sale that another copy was available

Wanted to say that your recommendation to trade in curated titles at Bull Moose was genius! I’m originally from Maine (moved over to NH a decade ago) and used to work next door to the Bull Moose in Lewiston when I was in high school in early 2000s. I’d always preorder new CDs and DVDs there as they were priced even better than Walmart and BestBuy and they could get you just about anything you want. I brought a box of blue rays and a couple 4Ks in to trade yesterday and got way more than I have gotten selling on eBay in the past and was able to pickup a couple Kino Lorber titles (they had almost 20 of them in stock!). I dunno why I never thought to do that but thanks for the suggestion! This is definitely the way to go!

I am a big fan of this movie. I already have the original 4K (and had purchased the BD before that). I just learned about this Criterion version, and I appreciate your video providing details about it. It's unlikely I'll notice any difference in A/V, though I am curious to see if I can, but the new book and special features are appealing to me. I also want to show my support for Disney, Criterion, and Physical Media in general, so this is one where I'm going to Vote with my Wallet, and buy again. Thanks again for another fine, detailed review!

I wouldn’t expect any more Disney/Pixar titles from Criterion unless the directors really push for them. It has been confirmed that WALL-E was not part of any larger deal, it happened because Andrew Stanton pushed for it. Just look at how Disney didn’t renew Shout! Factory’s license for Gravity Falls on Blu-Ray. Now it’s going OOP. That’s not a good sign.

I for one wish Criterion would just pick a packaging format and stick with it. I love when the packaging has that extra that a regular clamshell don't, whether it's steelbook or digibook or some kind of box or slip, but also with numbered releases I can't have them any other way than in numerical order, even if I don't have all the numbers, but I also hate it when most releases are in one type of case and then some releases at random places throughout the line up are different. Once I even wrote a letter to Disney's blu-ray publishing in Sweden (where I live) and complained about the fact that they had flipped the headshot and the "classics" number on the Peter Pan spine compared to every other release, and actually got a reply and an on demand printed insert where the number and headshot were in the "correct" place.

Hi I have been here for just some week, but I love all this content and honest review opinions. Helps a lot. A serious question I would appreciate some honest insight answers for and the following is my question from me; "I have a VERY large DVD collection several houndreds and I'm late at understanding the value of Blue-ray - Now I'm seriously calculating costs and ways to aquire all the most essential movies I really love for Blu-ray and 50+ are reserved for 4K editions. Am I doing right by this or am I crazy?" ALSO, "should I replace and trade in most of the DVD that have been replaced for Blu-ray?" Love to hear responses from serious collectors.
@JeffRauseo
@JeffRauseo Год назад
My advice - upgrade what you love. If they have 4K releases that’s a good option most times. Don’t go crazy though. And yeah I’d trade in DVD but they aren’t worth much unless they’re super rare. Maybe 50 cents at best

You know what's funny, I find myself using the 1080p disc in this set more when I want to watch the movie just because I have an ultrawide monitor on my PC but I don't have a 4K capable drive in it. And because my ultrawide is 2560x1080, I just use the 1080p disc and it looks just fine. And VLC has a feature which allows me to crop the movie into the correct aspect ratio so I get the most out of my monitor when viewing the movie. I'm also really happy that they included a stereo audio track because I use headphones on my PC, and while down mixing a surround sound track does sound fine (I've had no issues with how the 7.1 track on my monsters Inc 3D Blu-ray sounds through my headphones even without all the atmos for headphones turned on), I feel like having a dedicated stereo track will always be better. Also one last thing I want to note is that I honestly love the menu backgrounds on the 1080p disks, I must sucker for location fly arounds of CGI sets and those menu backgrounds don't disappoint. I honestly wish they had an option to hide the menu just so you could watch the backgrounds. Also I love going through all the bonus features because as a kid I never had the movie on Blu-ray, I had it on DVD which I think only had the movie and the Presto short. Nothing else and that's I think because the bonus features on the Blu-ray were all on their own second disc.
@chrisfratz
@chrisfratz Год назад
Also one thing I really want to see criterion do a release of now that Disney movies are on the table is Tron from 1982, because that is a really good movie and is also a piece of film history because of its use of CGI at the time.

And if it’s the same transfer without much difference/barely, then it doesn’t make any sense from that perspective either for me to get this.

Would the PS5 be a good 4K player or would I need to just go for an actual 4K player?

Great review thank you. I'll have to try out HD movie source. I've also posted a review for the Criterion Wall-E if you want to check it out!

WALL-E is NOT the first Disney Criterion. They’ve also done Armageddon, The Rock, Rushmore, and The Royal Tenenbaums.

@@DarrellLeeB That’s not what the video title says. It just says Disney, which is false.

@@ajzeg01 I can't dispute that part you are 100% correct. But he does say the correct thing in the video.

If the Atmos audio’s the same as the first 4K release, then it’s another wasted opportunity. The DTS-HDMA track is more detailed on the original 4K.

What is criterion?

I bought the original less than a week before the criterion one was announced. I am a bit pleased to hear the picture/sound was not significantly dif between the two. I really didn't enjoy the movie, no interest in upgrading. Thank you for the review. I appreciate your content, sincerely.

It’s a 7.1 core track. Some receivers might just show 7.1 because at its core that is what Atmos is.
