It's not transhumanism that necessarily causes people to be weak, simple, baby-like, whatever. But it's just a preference for comfort (over growth) and a lack of openness. There's nothing in transhumanism an sich that makes people weak, unless you have a very essentialist view of what a human is.

There's something about Wall-E as a film that just hits all the right spots. From its impeccable visual storytelling to its influences including 2001: A Space Odyssey, golden-era Hollywood romance films to even Adam & Eve, I genuinely believe it's not just one of the greatest animations, but one of the greatest films ever made. @ellugerdelacruz2555
@ellugerdelacruz2555 2 года назад
Well, think about it this way: He means Trans-humanism in the way that the humans in the movie have "shed their previous humanity" to reach something "better" which they aspired for i.e. a life in space full of luxury. It may not be the ideal term for transhumanism, but it is kind of a step in transhumanism. After all, when we "evolve" past several of our basic needs to the point that we no longer strive for them, is that not a step in transhumanism?

@@ellugerdelacruz2555 That is not a step towards trans-humanism. Rather I would call it hedonism because the change is not related or intented to be a physical or logical improvement. @ellugerdelacruz2555

@@godfreyofbouillon5634 Some transhumanists do. In fact, some would even go so far as to say that would be the entire point of transhumanism- to transcend past that which limits our power and pleasure. There's a reason why some have called transhumanism a "sci-fi nerd's version of an afterlife". But yeah, I get your point. And perhaps we're both right in a way. Because after all, the point of Storytellers' Video was that we should focus on the now instead of aspiring for something that might not even be worth it.
@godfreyofbouillon5634
@godfreyofbouillon5634 2 года назад
@@ellugerdelacruz2555 That first part may be true but in my experience, most transhumanists I have met believe pleasure and emotion to overall be in the way or not of top priority. But there is no doubt some are only focused on the hedonistic uses of technology. In the end, though I would say that focusing on the now is never a good thing. That is how problems like pollution and climate change have arisen. Rather in the present, we should be focused on building a future so that for others there will be a now until forever. Now I know that contradicts his view of Auto in the story but I believe that the only reason Auto was evil in the story was because he and the hedonistic life on the axiom created a technologically and socially stagnant society.

UPDATE: It has come to my attention that the masculine and feminine roles in the movie are a bit confused. Although Wall-E is male and Eve is female, and their physical characteristics line up as well, their actions are a bit muddled. Eve's coming down from above like a spirit is more masculine symbolism, and Wall-E's 'earthliness' and curiosity are actually more symbolically feminine traits. There are some other examples, but the point is that the symbolism is a bit inverted here and there. A movie like Moonrise Kingdom (2011) does get this distinction right. My bad!
@xnyrd692
@xnyrd692 4 года назад
I always kinda though of heavenly things as being somewhat more feminine than earthly. Like Tolkien's Elves and Dwarves. The elves are essentially the heavenly immortal version of humans whereas the dwarves are made of the earth. Though that may be a misappropriation of Tolkien's vision for the elves, he never thought of them being dainty femboys. So I don't know
@Mrsam402
@Mrsam402 4 года назад
I kinda see it like the Yin and yang symbol where both has little of each others traits.
@MrFaberJack
@MrFaberJack 4 года назад
It's not completely inverted, since symbolically there are situations where there is a feminine that is above the masculine or comes before it. For example the Mother of God (the purest and highest femininity) is below the Divine masculine but is above all other masculinities (She is higher than all Saints). Another example is Eve herself, that comes after Adam even tho usually the feminine is what precedes the masculine (feminine is the question, masculine is the answer). A more mundane example is a son with his mother, to whom he is submitted even tho she is feminine. So, even if the absolute masculine and feminine follow that order that you presented, there are a lot of relative masculines and feminines that mix things up (and makes the comsos dynamic rather than static). In this specific situation, Eve has a double role: she is the earthly feminine, and therefore below the earthly masculine that is Wall-E (in fact you can see that she is following his lead during the movie) and the divine feminine at the same time. Anyway, very good job with this video man :)

Just rewatched Stardust yesterday, and a star is knocked out of the sky and lands on Earth and she's a woman. Also, in our culture, it's more acceptable for men to get dirty and do more dirty jobs in the Earth, BUT women are associated as foragers, gatherers, and farmers/gardeners, but in actual employment it might be even or more men are farmers, I don't know the numbers. I liked your video, but I did think that the male/female thing was a bit odd. They're robots so they don't really need genders, but the more you pointed out the more I was like "woah, impregnate? seed?". so i definitely see the comparisons.

I find it quite frightening to think that this imaginary dystopian future has some real relation in our society. Obesity is becoming a poetic pandemic. Many have pushed fat acceptance, and though that may not sound inherently bad--if anything, sympathetic to overweight people--such a philosophy could turn upright humans into immoble blobs as we see in Walle, and more realistically seen in shows like My 600lbs Life. Currently, over thirty percent of the American population is obese--around seven percent is severely obese--this number is only going climbing. It has even been estimated that around 2030 or so, that half of the American population will be obese. So though this is most definitely controversial and will undoubtedly offend some, understand that many live an unhealthy lifestyle along with the lie that there is nothing wrong with it. Walle is a movie that exaggerates what is happening today with many food conglomerates and current obesity issues, for the distant future however, I wouldn't be surprised if it unfolded in a similar way.
@yucol5661
@yucol5661 3 года назад
Well to be fair. We used to be a LOT less accepting of fat people and the obesity still increased quickly after ww2 (at least US). We can only teach children how to eat better, make dangerous food harder to get and allow and teach exercising for everyone but no one is going to do that 🙃. Our cultures just didn’t have to teach that in the last and they never learned (well maybe some countries in Europe and Japan did)

I think you nailed it! I couldn’t find any dissonance. It’s interesting how people who can’t see the patterns and connections dismiss it as “reading too much into it”. It’s as if there is a limitation of meaning in the use of colour, shot composition, etc. Even if it was not meant by the creator, it can’t be dismissed as meaningless. Many times even the creator is not aware of the full extent of their creation. Think of a time when you said/did something trivial but later on someone shares how it had a great impact on them. I want to apologise if this sounds mean. Just making comparisons to religious imagery is not deep. Not to say these don't have anything interesting say, but simply making comparisons to them is, at least for me, not enough for an analysis. You end up explaining metaphors with other metaphors, at the points where you don't you actually end up saying something. If you actually would explain how and why you think there is a connection, instead of assuming the meaning of the biblical references is obvious, this video would be a lot stronger and clearer. One example , though not specificaly religious, is your use of the "masculine" and "feminine" Spirit. There are so many assumptions and in this concept alone, and you just seem assume its a given that masculine represents the builder and feminine a vessel for life(im simplifying). Only that feminine and masculine are symbols for much more abstract ideas, ideas you depict as obvious and not worthy of questioning, and because of that it is unclear why you think this masculine/feminine thing is so important, and seems like a far fetched comparison. One thing I found quite interesting was the comparison of EVE with the white dove. This kinda worked for me, but your explanation was again kind of surface level. Both bring back plants, but what they actually are is symbols for hope and life, hope because we know there is land/plants, and the life part kind of comes out of that hope. These biblical storys work for a reason. Exploring those reasons is far more interesting than drawing surface level comparisons, it also helps with noticing some biases you might have, because we all have those. Don't tell us what is, but why it is. I hope I didn't just talk down to you, I get a little to emotionally invested in things like this, because I think they're important.
@MrH2O1998
@MrH2O1998 2 года назад
Surface-level comparison is so easy and a great tool to manipulate people. Who's to say that Wall-E isn't the snake that tempted Eve to take the fruit to Adam, the Captain of the Axiom, dragging the entirety of humanity down to Earth where they have to work for to survive? It doesn't take much to draw meaningless parallels between the two stories if you're willing to omit details that don't support your argument. In the end, without the help of defective robots, those that went against human orders much like Auto, the Axiom wouldn't have been able to return to Earth. It's mostly rogue AIs against rogue AIs, the humans were just the supporting cast. However, if you ignore those details then yeah sounds Noah's Ark to me. Also Eve was way more masculine than Wall-E the entire movie.

The biblical allegories make it all the appropriate that Auto looks like an inverted pentagram (originally a pagan symbol representing "flesh", the upward-pointed pentagram representing "spirit"). There's a lot of "as above, so below" going on in this movie, but it's depicted from a "we must RESIST that system" perspective. Rightly so, of course. Andrew Stanton talks about it in the commentary, but he phrases it different (and better). Anyway, watch 'WALL-E' back to back with Tron, THX-1138, and Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

That all a very intresting way to read into things... got to say as a pagan not a Christian be any means though I did see some connections to the biblical stuff and in a way the scale of the story- it would have to touch on the godly side of things and how we had came so high while at the same time of falling so low with how people had became since leaving earth. I like the way it's up to the masculine energy and feminine energy working together to bring further the future but the story and is much more then that it's in much more of an inspirational sense of just how WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter Earth-Class) was made only to clean the trash of an abandoned planet, he was meant to have brothers yet they all slowly gave out only our stroy's WALL-E remained for he had the foresight to save parts for when he needed them. It can be seen more as a story of just how the fallen and down troted can raise to inspire and heal much then his intended directive.

WallE and Ratatouille are the greatest Pixar films in my opinion, Ratatouille for it's expression of love for creativity and self actualization. I also noticed that Toy Story 1 and 2 have interesting existentialist themes, that being the inevitably of children growing up and abandoning their toys (death/ending of relationships), but the toys deciding that it's better to enjoy the time they have and make their owner happy while they can, but I haven't seen anyone really address these.

Kind of feels like you, rightfully so, saw a connection to christian themes and just ran with it. I still had a good time though! Looking forward to the next one.

Wall-E wants Supposed to sort the objects into categories wall-E malfunctions which is the only reason that he is the final one to survive because he categorise spare parts and was able to repair himself the other units didn’t malfunction and simply perform the task of compacting and stacking Until they inevitably break down

The captain is a metaphor for Noah, Eve is the pigeon Noah send to find out if the rain has stopped, AUTO for devil, the passengers are Noah’s family, the plant is the olive plant, the Axiom Noah’s ark, and Wall-E probably God, I guess?

Great video analysis of the best Pixar film! You've put into words many of the things I felt when I watched this. This movie is more than just an environmental message film, it's a very pro-humanist movie that suggests the best ways for humans to move forward is not to remove all hardship and struggle, but rather to embrace and find meaning in it.

I need to point out that the humans aren't fat just because they're in a place where all their needs are met by technology. Though that's certainly part of it, it's explained in the movie itself that their bone density decreases over time the longer they're in space, which is true of real human astronauts which is why they don't stay for too long. Decreased bone density could make physical exercise literally impossible or too dangerous, I believe. In the clips you show we see how their bones got smaller, that's the scene where they explain the bone density issue I believe. I'm sure the large amounts of processed foods they eat play a role as well, we don't know what their diet is exactly, but it looks like it might be a SAD, standard American diet, which is definitely helping to cause obesity in real life, since around 80-90% of weight is about the food you eat not your exercise habits. Genetics also play a big role, and the movie hints at humans starting to evolve differently I think, because of how they live, though evolution usually isn't that extreme that quickly, though in some cases we can observe changes over shorter periods of time so it may be possible. My point is just that, all these factors play a role, and they're all technically true in real life, so I think it's important to mention them, but I get that that's not really what this video was about. Just thought I'd mention it.

I’m not sure this is really transhumanism. Transhumanism has to do with modifying yourself.

I think you don't really understand what TRANSHUMANISM is, you are thinking of CONSUMERISM where consuming is the most important aspect of life and what you have is basically everything and who you are doesn't really matter (not in the your economic situation or beliefs or whatever, but YOU yourself doesn't matter, it does not matter your personality or goals. Just how much you consume)

I never even noticed those dates underneath the pictures of the captains. How damn good must their medical technology be if someone as overweight as Captain O'Brien, the previous captain, can 'serve' as captain for 128 years? It's not even significantly less than the 143 years that the much healthier first captain served.

Y viendo desde otro lado, no les irira mejor siguiendo estando en la nave? parecia que todo iba bien, tenian una vida digna, tal vez obesos pero felizes y nunca se habla de crimen, odio o caos. Al regresar a la tierra terminan por volver a los viejos habitos, donde las voluntades chocaran y habra luchas por quien tendra la razon.

I don't quite think the title fits, as Wall-E isn't really about trans-humanism. That said, it was still an interesting interpretation and analysis of the movie. Gave me quite some food for thought, as many of the things went over my head, but do make sense.

Just because an essay is writen and read in a serious tone doesn’t mean it’s good. How this many people can listen to this spewing of random metaphors and think it was well thought baffles me. Really? Wall-E “empregnates” eve with a plant? Thats what we are choosing to read from this movie? 😑

It's not transhumanism that necessarily causes people to be weak, simple, baby-like, whatever. But it's just a preference for comfort (over growth) and a lack of openness. There's nothing in transhumanism an sich that makes people weak, unless you have a very essentialist view of what a human is.
