We're getting started on a 3,000SF farmhouse duplex, on a lot that is going to make the building process much more difficult. With overhead powerlines, a foundation that sits a whopping 12" away from a block wall, we've got our work cut out for us.

Interesting to see the building code regarding dividing walls must be a bit more relaxed there than here in Australia. Am pretty sure dividing walls between dwellings here must meet a certain fire rating (fire resistance level) from slab right to roof, no material breaking through that could carry a fire. Typically concrete building block are used for walls and then fire-resistant boards in roof cavities, etc.

Hey Matt, I have always made my framing jig out of wood. Never knew they made one out of steel (or aluminum). I was taught to pull 15 1\4", make a mark, then drive an ice pick at the mark, then pull 16, 32, 48 etc.

Don’t know what kind of relationship you have with the engineer but I think seeing/interviewing them would be a good video idea. What kind of training/experience they have that got them that career. How they work with the homeowner to try and deliver what they want. What THAT relationship is like. How a perspective homeowner could get into contact with someone like that etc.

Matt would a wall jack help in places you can't get your telehandler in. I have seen a ladder built where partition wall instead of a channel; that way they can place insulation in the area where the partition would go. Keep up the great work. If you have time watch "The Crazy Framer" on You Tube he frames a house by himself.

A question about your exterior Channel you made is it code that both sides has to be 2×6??. I always frame my exterior Channels with 1 2 X4 side to allow for insulation to be shoved in there. Because if you frame it with 2 2×6 sides and don't put insulation in it before you sheet and stand the wall it will have cold spot in it.. If it's code that you have to I completely understand but out here in western Washington I always do 1 2×4 side to allow for insulation.. Great content very happy I found your Channel!

Hey Matt, bought the Bigfoot plate marker, thanks for that. What's the best way in your opinion for clearing exterior wall plumbing? Do you notch your sill plate, or butt 2 sill plates up to the pipe and just titen bolt them within 12" of the butt on each side.

You’re correct. 16” from center to center of stud material. It allows drywall and plywood to be ran and break center on a stud.
@KrkIDTrPD
@KrkIDTrPD 3 года назад
You should do a two stud corner at channeling with one stud in channel on exterior walls so insulation can be placed in every cavity preventing a cold shut and you will still achieve backing for your drywall on both sides of wall I put my stud on the same side I pull layout. Elite shit

I'm no engineer but my gut tells me that the sheer strength of hangars nailed to lumber can't match the compressive strength of jacks. although I suppose that snow load is not really an issue in your part of the world.
