I discovered Richard & Linda Thompson in 1980, saw their last ever gig together in a London Theatre and have been seeing him just about every year at least once ever since. One of the best and most distinctive and innovative guitarists of all time on electric and acoustic and a great songwriter and performer. Also, Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, Runrig, the Oyster Band, Bert Jansch, Lindisfarne and much more.
I found this sort of by accident. I heard this song on World Cafe but it was REM`s version. I did some digging and found this wonderful group. He and his group, are they all family?
Another question if You don`t mind, as I am just learning about this wonderful band. Are all of those young people on stage their kids? What a wonderful scene.
@@johnweiss3748 - I'm here to put you out of your misery: At the front you have Richard Thompson singing and playing the red Stratocaster, his daughter and second child with Linda Thompson, Kami Thompson, is standing next to him singing harmony, his grandson Zac Hobbs (mum is Richard and Linda's first child Maimuna) playing a Telecaster stands just behind them, and behind Zac, on bass with the long hair is Jack (RT's son by his second wife Nancy Covey). Next to him (also on Telecaster) is Kami's husband (so RT's son-in-law) James Wallbourne - guitarist with the Pretenders and the Pogues and now in a band with Kami called The Rails. I think the drummer is James Wallbourne's brother. Last but not least is Teddy Thompson on acoustic guitar (RT and LT's third child). Hope that helps satisfy your curiosity.
@@johnweiss3748 - you're welcome. I just saw RT and band at Portsmouth Guildhall - his grandson Zac Hobbs was on rhythm guitar and mandolin: RT let him take a few solos too - he was really good!! On drums was Fairport drummer Dave Mattacks who was incredible and new wife Zara Phillips singing. RT sounded as amazing as ever and he played Guns are the Tongues from the Sweet Warrior album which was fantastic.
sounds great and a tremendously great song. I like seeing Richard so happy at the end of the song. He took his chances, survived and not only that loved it!
What a weird treasure this is I couldn’t believe my ears when I have it I heard whatwas out or I couldn’t really couldn’t believe it when I saw the image of the full family thing around playing what incredible where are you doing what are RU-vid rules do you get gems like this this is such a wonderful treasure I never thought I would hear Richard and Linda duetting again how unbelievable along with Teddy one unbelievablefor the ages
Dave Swarbrick was a great musician who was known and loved by millions. Richard Thompson has been recognised as one of the best guitarists in the world for nearly fifty years as well as being a great songwriter. Just because you're ignorant, doesn't make them nobodies. Who are you again? Oh, nobody.
I would love to see this group perform! I've seen Richard perform a couple of times before, but never even knew he performed with his kids. Great version of the tune!
I didn’t think I’d ever hear for my own self Richard and Linda Thompson duetting together again in modern times and I never seen well just sing And teddy too he just keeps getting bettered
I really got to learn to stop leaving comments late at night I make so many typos that I don’t catch it in time sorry for the really badly spelled comments they were heartfelt Because I’m so thrilled with his videos I just live And the photo showing all of them on stage together playing together it’s just amazing to Angelina Richard and Linda Johnson fan for many years now actually I thought I’d ever seen in my lifetime and I don’t wanna go with you when you were divorced and ever put our enemies are together again I never know if Cherrywood and we were chatting with some day labor I will Richard that lovely Linda is back in the picture as you can see again for long time she had a condition that paralyzed with fear and Good night see see Cuts I should just say saying that was not supposed to say what a weird treasure just what an amazing treasure
An electric rhythm guitar (played on the original version by Simon Nicol) provides depth and resonance to "WOD" sometimes missing on trio or acoustic takes.
Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time You can waste your time on the other rides This is the nearest to being alive Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death You can go with the crazy people in the Crooked House You can fly away on the Rocket or spin in the Mouse The Tunnel Of Love might amuse you Noah's Ark might confuse you But let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death On the Wall Of Death all the world is far from me On the Wall Of Death it's the nearest to being free Well you're going nowhere When you ride on the carousel And maybe you're strong But what's the good of ringing a bell The switchback will make you crazy. Beware of the bearded lady Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death Let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time Oh let me ride on the Wall Of Death one more time You can waste your time on the other rides This is the nearest to being alive Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death Let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death Oh let me take my chances on the Wall Of Death
@@peterloscalzo8302 She does a great job. I know Linda and Richard will never be a couple again but for me their duets were peerless. Even better than Lindsey and Stevie
Linda managed to overcome her 'hysterical dysphonia' enough to record again, but live performances are still very difficult. She recorded her cover of Tom Waits' DAY AFTER TOMORROW live on purpose to access the nerves and terror.
All of them by marriage! Kami is married to James Walbourne on guitar, whose brother Rob is on drums. Rob is married to Brooke Gengras and she is there too!
Richard's daughter looks exactly like her mom, Linda Thompson! and her voice sounds the same...you could easily mistake her for her mother! Wow! Canny resemblance, indeed!
A good drummer would better the band by a lot. I'm guessing the guy on the right with the acoustic guitar has the right feel for the song-can't hear him. Oh, this was 6 years ago.
@@Possumsarepeopletoo - Lol!! Fair enough mate. I'm a musician and perhaps 12 shots of whisky with beer chasers would help me be amenable . . . maybe. Lol!! Cheers.
