How to apply lining paper. Barry shows you the easy way to apply lining paper for the best finish.
Lining your walls with lining paper before you hang wallpaper is key to getting a smooth finish for your walls or ceiling, to prepare them for either painting or wallpapering over.
Lining paper can help to:
- disguise small imperfections in the surface of walls
- add another layer of insulation to your room
- prevent wallpaper shrinking when it’s hung on the wall, avoiding
gaps between the lengths of paper

Barry, thank you so much for these videos! It has helped me out so much, I've never done anything like this and I'm doing up my bedroom with lining paper, I've had to adapt with a low budget as I've not had the money for the right tools I.e not having a sharp stanley blade or caulking board but I think I've done a pretty good job so far!

Hi Barry- huge fan of your work here!! And although I am “late to the party,” I am hoping that you will sense my desperation and be willing to save the day by answering the questions of a nervous- wreck of a mum who is on a budget, but still desperately wants to make THE dream bedroom for her only daughter (who just recently became a 13-going-on-30 year old know-it-all-teenager)! I literally have watched all of your videos concerting wallpapering- more than once I might add- and I have found them to be not only informative, but a lifeline along my decorating disaster- I mean adventure! While I have no formal training in the area of home design (I was formerly a college and high school English professor), but being medically retired due to a chronic illness has provided me with plenty of time to develop an obsession with redecorating and renovating my entire house! After putting a lot of work into other areas of my home, my teenage daughter has decided that her bedroom is now my prime focus. She decided that she wanted a Gothic/Victorian/ fancy/unique bedroom; thinking this would be a piece of cake, I agreed to this madness; and now, I find myself desperately needing your help! Like I said I watch all of your videos and I am finally preparing to line my knockdown texture that he has walls with lining paper so that I can hang this beautiful Victorian, black Damask wallpaper my daughter had to have. After a lot of research, I finally purchased three rolls of heavy duty lining paper that is pre-pasted and according to the directions, simply needs to be soaked in water for 15 seconds and then hung directly on the wall. My question is this: 1. Can I just soak it in water and apply it directly to the wall? I do have wallpaper adhesive that I ordered and I did sand the knockdown textured walls, and then primed it with an acrylic sealer/ primer, And then attempted to size it with a mixture of the wallpaper adhesive mixed with water- however I think mine was way too thin and so I ended up improvising and using a roller to apply the adhesive with a little water to dilute it. I think that helped. Anyways now when I go to hang the liner, according to your videos I am supposed to paste the back of the liner before I hang it; Do I need to do this or should I simply just follow the manufacture directions and soak it in water? 2. I am doing three walls with the wallpaper (Actually I am only doing 3/4 of the walls as the bottom quarter of the wall is already painted a red color and I am going to put a border just separate the wallpaper from the painted bottom half of the wall and also I think this will help secure the wallpaper and make it look very fancy). My question is should I measure and hang the lining paper to Go all the way around the room in one strip so essentially it would have to go around the corner to the adjacent wall (right angles), Or should I simply just do one wall at a time and cut the liner and just butt it up next to each other in the corners? I hope that makes sense. 3. What is the best way to get the liner to go around windows, as one wall has one huge window and another wall has the closet doors on it. Should I just cut the lining paper and try to get it fit into the corners of the window and the closet doors is closest possible and then maybe just paint with black paint which is the color of the wallpaper so that it blends in the corners? 4. Once I hang the lining paper, and before I hang the wallpaper, how long do I need to wait and how long do I let the line paper set before I can hang wallpaper? 5. After I hang the lining paper, I read something in the Manufacturers directions about needing to apply some kind of primer or adhesive before I put wallpaper over it. What would you recommend that I put or use over the Lining paper, underneath the wallpaper, Before I hang the wallpaper over the lining paper. Or do I even need to do this at all? The wallpaper that I’m using is supposed to be self adhesive and already come pre-glued and I am supposed to just dip it in water. Should I just do that, or Would you recommend adding adhesive to the back of the wallpaper anyways to help secure it to the lighting paper? Or should I simply roll some water down or diluted adhesive over the lining paper Before hanging the wallpaper? I know these are a lot of questions and I really hope you can help me because I would really like to start and I am very eager but I need these questions answered before I do and I’m not sure us to go as your videos are super informative and you seem to have all the answers!!! Thanks in advance!!!

Great video! I've got a 4 bedroom house to lining paper and paint, I've maybe took on too much (never hung wall paper before) do I lining paper horizontally then vertically? The walls are very poor, full of bump/holes/old paint flaking which I've fine fillered the edges to try and soften them out, it really needs to be replastered but budget constraints etc. And then after lining paper caulk the skirting boards and architrave? Thanks Tom

We 3r1 Get a scaffold board and a hop up or step ladder.
@we4r119

My walls are upward of 7ft tall. So I've had to climb to the top 3 rungs of my ladder as it is. I've papered it all vertically now. Looks fine without papering horizontally as the lining paper is wider than the wallpaper. I don't know where to get a scaffold board from either and I presume the steps on a second ladder would have to match the height of the steps in my step ladder. Also, that method wouldn't work for me papering into alcoves. My alcoves aren't as conveniently wide as your alcoves. But thanks for trying to offer some advice.

You won't always need 5! Start with 1 or 2. They make narrower ones you can flip the other way. Just watch your step!

I thought it did but it says on the packet instructions you can hang it vertically if you're not putting other wallpaper on it. Wish I knew that before starting horizontally 😂

is it a good idea to put adhesive on wall first and then paste the paper to it ?
@onemanfran

Read the instructions on the wallpaper. Most lining papers are paste the paper - you can't just paste the wall because the paper requires the soaking in paste to allow for the fibre expansion. If you don't do this it will try to expand on the wall and it will bubble and peel, not a great idea! However there are a few paste the wall linings available, for example Albany have a paste the wall lining paper that's suitable for their paste the wall wallpapers. I personally prefer paste the paper because I feel I get a more reliable result but to each their own.

Read the manufacturer's instructions on the label. They're all different, so know your product before you get anything wet!

I always struggle with joints. That would have made this video so much more useful if you had dealt with joints. I always seem to be able to see the joints after papering and painting.

Tint your primer as close to the background color of your paper and the seams become invisible most times, or, have a colored pencil or marker to also hide the gaps. Practice first!!!

So creases don’t overlap/standout with wallpaper since wallpaper is usually hung vertically
