Walmart’s departure from Portland shines light on rampant property crime 

Don't blame Walmart, blame the city leadership.

It's hard to feel sorry for these communities when they voted for these policies.

Make a law that stealing over $10 is a felony and let the stores stop them from leaving with items by force.

Being soft on small crimes and small amounts of drugs, is the beginning of all evils. Thanks to Portland and San Francisco for enlightening us on this. Your sacrifice has meant so much.

All the cops in the world cant help if nobody is prosecuted for the crimes they are committing. A slap on the wrist and a sorry we arrested you aint gonna stop anyone. Freakin Genius.

This has happened before. Look at places like Detroit, Baltimore and Chicago. There are very few shops in certain areas because the crime is so terrible.

You know a city is messed up when it takes Walmart's being looted several times to shine light on property crimes.

What blows my mind is how shocked the locals are, really? Who could’ve expected that when you put soft judges and lawmakers in charge and let them give criminals more rights than the law abiding citizens that the whole state including businesses whether big or small would pull out!? You get exactly what you voted for people!

I just resigned my teaching position. The kids are out of control and many of them do these same types of behavior with zero consequences. That's exactly why this is happening. Bad kids turn into bad adults. But keep excusing it away as you enable this behavior.

Those who steal drive the stores away. Those who wink at those who steal also drive stores away. Worst of all are policies of failing to prosecute theft under $1,000.

Why do people elect such ridiculous councilmen? It's their own fault... as life becomes more difficult and expensive for Portlanders.

This is the city whose mayor STOOD with Antifa and shouted he was going to defund the police. And color me surprised this is happening. The only thing I’m surprised about is they didn’t leave earlier.

Nothing new, saw this in Las Vegas years ago The theft literally closed one of the biggest super centers in that part of town. I had witnessed stealing personally many times. It is still a boarded up building today.

the issue is that criminal behaviour is not just condoned it is actively promoted the only way that this "community" can go forward is for them to shame criminal behaviour outright, colleges also need to be purged, structuralists should be held accountable for all of this

Regardless of who you are , State, Countys, etc there is a saying, Bad Apples ,Ruin It For Everyone". The people that it hurts the most are the public that act responsible, do their part to support the Business and Communities. Its not hard to see who what where the bad apples make their presence know. There may come a day with any business to shop you have to be and meet standards to get foot in the door

I'm an immigrant and I find it crazy that shoplifters here, even caught red-handed, are not stopped by store employees. Cuz in my old country, if you get caught you'll be beaten up first before you're handed to the police. This kind of lawlessness is unique to the US because of the culture of suing for everything under the sun, soft judges, criminals given more rights. If judges start using common sense and not giving frivolous lawsuits air, sending these criminals to jail, these would all stop & businesses will not be afraid anymore to stop the thieves!

Portland was a nice place 50 years ago. I moved out in 1987.

The polity of Portland should be replaced with a government of Portland. Any government, since at least 5,000 years ago is supposed to provide safety for its citizens and businesses. A side note: any government since the first industrial revolution supposed to provide roads.

It's amazing now how real estate still stays constant my grandmother's house on 85th and Burnside right above 82nd she lived there for 65 years and someone came in redid the house recently it went through a lot of owners since she died in 1985 and they added 1200 square feet to the house ...it sold for 750,000 this was August 2023.. I live there in the 1970s and it was starting to turn then. . That was even before the 205 freeway was put in

The only people I feel bad for are the elderly that lived there their whole life. It's not like the thieves and sidewalk poopers are going to help them.

Having more police doesn't do anything as long as the DA keeps letting them go. This is utterly ridiculous, and all of it could have been avoided.

My daughter lives 10 minutes from Portland. It’s much worse than is being told.

*This is why all grocery stores need a kiosk to order groceries or items and have nothing in the store where people are able to steal it.* neighborhoods where 90% of the people don't care about their communities growth they want to destroy their communities so businesses move to more prospective neighborhoods where they can grow with the community.

Walmart must be applauded for being too polite and stating the reason for closure as merely a financial one… instead of stating the obvious.

the crime in portland is really terrible , i used to live at the mp5 on 82nd and within 2 years my car was stolen twice and the car battery 4 times ,,, my friend owns his own personal business and his equipment was stolen 11 times in a 12 months span ,though he did live elsewhere than i , portland is not what it used to be ,,,

The people need to act and say the heck with the cops and start their own police force. It is a completely legitimate option that we as citizens have It's already being done in our cities. We just need more of the population to get involved... if people want to truly get rid of crime, their need to work in hand with the local law enforcement .Then if local law enforcement doesn't want to work together , then that's when you do your part in enforcing the laws of the land.. This has to be done with much thought and planning with group thinks. It is going to be work , and a lot of it, but what else can we do ? This was brought onto us on purpose and with malice by Joe Biden ! What scares me, is when Biden said two separate times the there would not be an election ! I seen and heard it with my own eyes and ears... Crazy , I know. It freaked me out

The Nike store in Portland just closed too. They said they would only reopen if the police department can assign them officers to be in front of the store during operating hours. Anyone who doesn't think that crime and theft is in a major component of them closing their stores is just refusing to accept reality.

It doesn't matter how many cops you have or how many arrests they make if the DA doesn't prosecute then it's all completely pointless.

When something goes viral; an issue showing up in local, national or international news. You know that that issue is not just in your own little sphere/algorithm.

What is happening at Portland?

I applaud Walmart.

My family and I visited Portland from Phoenix hoping to escape the crime infested, overcrowded freeways, homelessness on every corner…… after 3 days in Portland, Phoenix didn’t seem so bad. What a S hole.

It's happening in Seattle, too. Targets and Wal-Marts are closing daily, driven by the crime and the police refusal to act.

Eventually the chains store will have verify I.D. to enter and a control exit (a hallway that locks you in until buzzed out) shoplifters caught go into the store datebase and prevents them from entering.

Financial reasons= hard to be profitable when your inventory is stolen

Our city leaders here in San Antonio having a vote to release or not arrest people who steals anything less than $700 worth of items. Who would want to open a business in a city that protects criminals who hurts their businesses

Walmart should tell it like it is. Plenty of businesses in Portland that are shutting down due to crime already announced it. REI, a major outdoor gear supplier, said exactly that. It’s no secret.

Why are they stealing from Walmart? Is it low wages? Is it high rent? Is it the characteristic of the people who live there? Is this a symptom of something else?

Walmart closing is truly unfortunate. Now all the lawless drug addicted criminals will have to venture out to steal from smaller stores in the area instead of making a one stop shoplifting spree.

We’ve had similar problems here in Memphis, TN. When large companies like Walmart, Kroger, Target, etc leave a particular section of town, because of “financial”reasons, that’s simply a code word for shoplifting, holdups, or significant area crime that scares away shoppers. Until punishments become so severe, the crime epidemic will only get worse.

What a great reputation for Portland to have cultivated. You know you're at the bottom of the barrel when WalMart pulls out of your commuity. We're headed into Detroit and Camden territory here folks. We need to vote the whole system out and replace it with actual constituent focused policy.

Darrel is a good guy and a straight shooter. I work down the street from him a couple blocks away. I used to live in the neighborhood. When my car was stolen out out of my driveway the cops couldn't care less. When it was "recovered" 10 blocks away it was because it was parked illegally, towed without informing me, and then I had to pay a $400 tow bill like I was the criminal. I've lived in Portland 50 years and it just keeps getting worse. I am heartbroken that this once sleepy bohemian counter-culture kooky city has descended into chaos and anarchy. Portland should be a cautionary tale for other cities about law enforcement. Also I am a republican, believe strongly in personal accountability, and feel like I am trapped behind enemy lines in my home city.

Good for Walmart, no business should have to endure such blatant lawlessness.

The irony of the politicians to hire more police officers, when you don't let them enforce the laws and rarely convict criminals, is a major part of the problem.

When Wal Mart, Dollar General, IHOP, and Waffle House leave your city you may as well just turn off the lights.

I think it's so ironic how, just a few short years ago, people from all over the nation were packing up and moving to Portland. Now they're leaving in droves so fast it's insane.

The real story is not Wal-Mart leaving Portland, it's the fact that there are any stores staying. 🤔

The whole west coast is a mess, from Mexico to Canada.

Stores expect a percentage of loss but with the rampant theft, lack of police support and fear of shopping there it becomes too much. Employees and customers become too afraid of being in the stores with that environment. I'm glad the Liberals are seeing what they created and they certainly deserve it.
