The first panic attack I ever had was uncontrolled crying (also couldn'tcatch my breath). It scared my boss. We had worked together for 4 years and been friends just as long. She had never seen me upset (I'm very emotionally controlled). She was able to spot what was happening because it was something she'd personally dealt with a lot. She was able to talk me through it and get me back to a calm state. We no longer work together but we are still friends.

OH, COME ON....you take your dogs WITHOUT VESTS to clarify that they were SERVICE dogs so as you didn't have to misfortune about if the dogs were actual service dogs. You are actually part of the problem. I actually think that while the ADA says you can't be questioned about your dog....HOWEVER I do think the stores can ask you about your dogs vaccinations, etc. The sick sad thing is that no one would have had "PANIC ATTACK" had you actually had the vest on the d*mn dogs to start with. Sorry, but you caused this yourself....AND by the time all you supposed Service Dog owners get done with all your stupid "PROOF"....the government is going to step in and make the rules VERY difficult for the ACTUAL people such as yourselves that TRULY need SERVICE DOGS.... Here's a suggestion : JUST because you CAN go into a STORE without a vest on your dog doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do. People like you that have service dogs APPARENTLY like the EXTRA NEGATIVE ATTENTION that you get by not VESTING YOUR dog, otherwise you'd take the 2-3 minutes it takes to put the vest on your dog, so you can get through a store without being hassled, putting a vest on your dog BEFORE YOU ENTER the store doesn't take that LONG for you to say "Well, the dog DOESN'T need a vest." Maybe so, but it would be so much less heartache for you if you just put the vest on. Last question....so you're out in public and pass out or faint or whatever you want to call it. How is it that you are able to continue to drive if you are passing out in the store? US States have rules for drivers that pass out/faint have seizures and they don't give SPECIAL privileges to people that pass out and continue to let them drive....it isn't done and if you are passing out on camera and getting into your car and driving yourself home you are BREAKING the law and you know it. When you pass out and get into your car and drive and have ANOTHER episode...and get into a serious accident and seriously HURT someone or KILL someone....then what? The chances that you'll be prosecuted and sent to prison are highly likely.

@@holiday-td6hx you are quite ignorant aren't you? I have a diabetic alert dog. He is a German Shepherd/Lab mix with a double coat. They're is no way he can handle a vest when temps are above 60° as he overheats easily. I have NEVER had someone give me a hard time for him not wearing a vest. It is actually people who go on Amazon to get their pet dog a service dog vest when they are not actual service dogs. In addition, how do you know she was driving? @@DexterTheGermanHusky this is really weird. I am in Walmart in my home town, and they may not know much, but they know the ADA laws! And they check every dog that enters their store. Unfortunately, the fakers are getting smarter. I was behind a fake team two weeks ago, in Walmart of all places. The Greeter saw the team come in, walked up and said hello, then apologized and told the owner she had to ask if his dog was a service dog. The owner said, yes it was. She asked the owner what the dog was trained to do. He said 'medical alert'. I know for a fact that is a plausible answer, because one of my friends has a medical alert dog for his diabetes, and another had an alert dog for his epilepsy. But as I was watching this, something about the dog put me off. It was fairly well behaved, It wasn't lunging, or moving around too much, and it seemed to heel fairly well...I noticed the owner used hand signals to command it. And it sat when a hand signal was given. But the dog didn't stay focused on the owner, it was looking around all over the place, and it leaned forward to sniff the air every time some one passed it. His tail was wagging the whole time, which that itself, is no indication... but the wagging would speed up every time someone walked by. Little things that struck me as off. I saw the team once more during my trip at the Walmart. A woman had brought a puppy in with her (yes, I know that's wrong, it clearly was not a service animal, but in it's defense, it was in the seat area of the cart, and it was fast asleep, and the woman wasn't trying to pass it off as a service animal); apparently, she had JUST purchased the puppy from a breeder, had driven a long way for this particular dog (Scottish border collie), and had stopped off on the way home to pick up items for it. It was 4 days before Christmas, and it was COLD. 'Service dog team' turned the corner, and dog saw puppy in the cart. Immediately adult dogs hackles go up, and it starts growling loudly, staring intently at this puppy. The owner, didn't seem to pay attention, at first, as he was putting groceries in his cart. He then tried to move along, but the dog wouldn't budge. He literally had to drag the dog away, to get it to break contact. And the dog kept looking back at the puppy. Dog owner finally breaks contact between the two, hands it off to another person, then comes back to berate the woman with the puppy! The reason I mentioned this, is because the Dog owner knew exactly what to say to pass his dog off as a service dog. Maybe the dog was having a bad day... but then there are also some pets out there that are trained well enough to pass a public access test, maybe not with flying colors... but enough. And fakers are getting better at faking.

@@sdmcdaniel2255 How did you know that the dog owner had went "a long way" to get the dog? You mean to tell me the owner couldn't TAKE the dog home BEFORE he went to Wal-Mart to purchase items he needed for the dog...OR purchase the items EVEN before he picked the dog up? @sdmcdaniel2255
@sdmcdaniel2255 5 лет назад
@@holiday-td6hx actually, I 'know' because I ASKED the owner of the puppy. She had driven up to VA to purchase the dog from a breeder, and was on her way to SC. She wasn't going home, She was on her way to her mother's because the puppy was a gift. She was stopping off at a hotel for the night, but had to stop in somewhere to pick up a dog kennel and a couple of other items to meet the hotel's requirement for allowing the dog to stay there. She was also by herself, so she couldn't leave the car on for the puppy. I also know that she had special permission from the Store Manage to bring the puppy into the store. I wasn't trying to 'make excuses'. I did CLEARLY say, yes, I know it's wrong. The store manager shouldn't have given her permission, it's against store policy. I was, however, trying to point out that the puppy had done nothing to provoke the 'service dog' other than the act of being there. A trained service dog would have ignored the puppy completely, and there wouldn't have been an incident. A good service handler might have SPOKEN to the puppy owner, and informed her that the puppy wasn't allowed in the store, and would have learned that she was given permission under extenuating circumstances. IF the older dog was a real service dog, he wasn't well trained for public access. Most likely he was a fake, but the owner was smart enough to know how some service teams react... and he acted the part.

So true. I also think you should go back with the laws, regulations and knowledge that they NEED and are responsible to know, as well as explaining to them how the dog responds to the handler when they have an episode. So that they KNOW how NOT to make it worse. Approach them respectfully and ask that they hear you out and ask questions, so they understand what they did and what they should do. They need to be held accountable. That’s totally unacceptable in this day and age. At the very least take a knowledgeable person with you back to that store and ask to talk to the management- tho they should know better- you may need to teach them-(I know- shouldn’t be your job) but someone’s got to do it. Eric BI so in other words I could take my cat into WM on a leash, set him in the cart and say "He's a service animal" and WM is going to allow this? Sorry, but I've seen dogs that clearly are just "pets" piss /shit on the floor in stores and walk away, clearly, these animals aren't service dogs. People who actually have service dogs/animals are making this issue worse by constantly getting upset about someone "asking" about their SD. This law needs to be changed and the SD and his/her handler needs an appropriate card etc. to prove that the dog/animal is indeed a Service Animal. Most of these SD are doing a great job, but it's wrong to take a trained SD into a store without proper gear stating what they are doing. People are causing their own issues by not wanting to be questioned. I certainly wouldn't mind if I had a SD and was asked about it or had to prove my animal was a service animal.

She knows when a person with a disability, has a disability or not, she is almost as smart as a lawyer, cause she knows the laws, and she's almost as smart as a doctor, cause she knows if a person fainted or not. Wow, I bet that Walmart employee will probably be promoted. Don't you wish you could be that smart? Good grief, where do they find these employees?

Ugh right before I have a panic attack I start to breath really fast and sometimes I get shaky, my SD will spin in circles and paw my feet or he will he will do a really quiet high pitched whine just depending on how bad my breathing is. I was once starting to go into a panic attack at the casino up the road from my house (my mother and I’s SD were both with us while getting food, both behaving perfectly but we were in such a rush to make it to the restaurant before they closed we had no time for gear so pinch collars and simple leashes it was.) anyways I was already nervous when we got there cause it is a huge casino and there were a lot of people (many of whom use drugs sadly). We walk to the cage to get some change and then walked towards the restaurant we were walking thru a small hallway when 6 security guards came up and only one was female. She was staring at us and shaking her finger at our dogs and she said “are these service dogs?” We said yes and she said “ well they can’t be in here cause they’re pitbulls” mind you my pup is part pitbull part Australian Shepherd and my mother’s dog is American Staffordshire terrier. I said “you cannot breed discriminate service dogs” and she said “well they could scare people” my mom said “it doesn’t matter because they are task trained service dogs and they are behaving as they should so I don’t see why anyone is afraid of them, they haven’t growled lunged, or barked at anyone.” They lady stood there for a minute just staring at us and the dogs. Trouble (my SD) started alerting by first pawing at my foot a few times, then he started spinning. (I’m starting to freak because I just want to leave and they are blocking all entrances so there’s no way out and when I feel defenseless I just shut down.) Before the lady could spit out anything else my mom said “you know what it doesn’t even matter, we are leaving anyways.” She then tells me she seen her friend and told me to go ask her for a ride so we didn’t have to walk because it had started to rain. My voice was shaking when I told her I didn’t want to but she reassured me and I tried to walk passed the guards shaking with tears staring to roll down my cheeks. The lady stopped me again and said I couldn’t take my SD. So not knowing what to and just wanting to get out I handed his leash to my mom and I ran all the way to her friend sobbing. I could hear troubles high pitched whine from across the casino, he knew I was about to shut down. Her friend said she got dropped off by taxi because she let her friend borrow her car, so I said thank you and ran back to my mom I tried to pull myself together for at least a few minutes so we could at least get outside before I had a complete break down. As soon as I got back my mom said “ we are leaving now please don’t follow us you’ll only make things worse.” Two of the guards followed us out anyways and when we got to a “safe place” I broke down I was so terrified, the lady didn’t even care that trouble was alerting (we told her that that’s what he was doing when he was spinning and doing his whine but I forgot to mention it up there) she completely ignored it basically. I just hope that one day these kind of things won’t happen😞

I am currently training my service dog so I have been learning the laws. Walmart is unbelievable. I have noticed during the past few weeks they have signs on all of their doors describing the difference between a service dog and an ESA. As service dog handlers it's also important to remember the individual states can add to or modify the ADA law as long as they don't change the base laws. In Utah, the recent changes to the laws allow ESA dogs the same rights as service dogs in hotels only. The law also allows businesses to require vests to he worn and in some cases they can even ask for your paperwork. The reason behind the change is because anyone can buy the service animal vests, badges, leashes and other items on Amazon. In fact, when my trainer told me to purchase a vest with "in training" patches she told me to buy it off Amazon. While I agree with your situation we as handlers need to know the state specific laws regarding service dogs.

Obviously it doesn't matter whether they are welcomed or not but it's nice that they want people and their dogs to feel welcomed. Only issue is that people get away with bringing their pets in by putting them in their carts and such. I love when people not inside of our brains tell us how to respond to unwanted illnesses inside of our brain. I have bad anxiety and if I get too stressed out I shut down. I can’t talk or move so I just sit there. I’ve done this multiple times at school, have accommodations for it, and have been diagnosed multiple times by multiple people. When I shut down most of the admin don’t know how to treat it and they see a teen being disrespectful and I understand that. I had a TEACHER come up to me she asked me if I was okay and I didn’t give a response and she waited for one then eventually said “you do know no response is still a response”. The people who are educated with my anxiety make mistakes but overall help a lot. I honestly believe people should be taught that not all disabilities mean autism, Down syndrome, missing limbs, etc. and even with that should be generally educated on how to help. Granted different people react differently but to jump to conclusions that you’re “just crying” or being a “disrespectful teenager”... that can really trigger even more anxiety. It sounds like you handled the situation pretty well and they handled it poorly. I’m sorry you had to go through all of that to the extent of you passing out.

I know this was published in January, but I wanted to give my own experience as a Walmart cashier when it came to service dogs. I had a very sweet woman come through my line with her dog, not vested, and it was clear that her dog was working. The only time her dog got distracted was when I put her groceries into the cart with him/her. I asked her very politely if I could pet her dog, and that I understood if I couldn’t, since he looked like he was working, and she told me I could with a small chuckle. After I was back behind the register, I told her about how I’m looking to get a service dog, and she smiled and said, “if having a service dog will help you, then go for it! It’s your life, and only you know what you need”. I still stand by those words, even now as I’m trying to save money up for my own service dog. I’m so sorry that this happened to you, and I hope that Walmart gets/got educated real quick.

I don’t know because I don’t have a service dog so Im honestly just asking. Whenever I see someone with a service dog, I want to pet them so bad, but I refrain; understanding that they’re working. The corporate policy is used to remove the employee, manager or owner's from the immediate situation. Their hope is that you will leave and try to contact upper management where most times you'll get no answer.....the real problem is the people saying their dog is a service dog. But being limited to the 2 questions allowed by law opens a big loop hole that fake service dog owners use. This is my opinion! When people get caught saying their dog is a service dog when they are not, they should be insanely fined and made example of. Including community service working with those who really need the use of a service dog.

I'm so sorry this happened to you, dear friend. Was the employee that gave you issues a salaried employee, like a manager? Were you able to contact corporate and get some answers? I see they gave you their store policy on paper. It's difficult dealing with corporate, because they will not call the store directly and correct the salaried employees, but it doesn't hurt to try. I hope this doesn't happen to you again.

In South Australia, we can legally accredit our dogs, however they still have legal access if they are having and can be identified as working dogs. The amount of people who ask for these things is so damn stupid, especially since like I said, we legally do not an ID for our dog to have access, it just ensures us they'll get it.

I feel like if someone starts diagnosising on your panic attacks ask them for their medical ID. Panic attacks comes in many forms just as Lupus. I have panic attacks in Walmart period because people are so rude and think they rule you. But look what use to be a family friendly benefitual store went down the tubes after the original owner passed. I would rather spend a little more at local stores and be treated with respect then that store. You should of contacted the disability service and reported what was being done so they can go and check out things. If these places was taught the correct information our lives would be better too. Thank you for sharing. God bless.

I have a question. I had a lady in my local Wal-Mart with a service dog and the dog pooped in cosmetics. The lady cleaned up the mess thankfully, but is it normal for service dogs to poop in stores? Can age of the dog be a possible factor? I only ask because when some people bring in service dogs or dogs in general and the dog poops, the person and dog get kicked out. Another thing I've had on my mind how do you feel about dogs being in the carts without being in a carrier or on a towel?

Is there anyway you could blow up the smaller sections on the Walmart document at 5:56 and following where you show Walmart’s official policy? People using small smartphones won’t be able to read it myself included. I do find it disturbing that they would constrict Federal Law with their own preference for vested dogs. Obviously with the whisper down the lane effect so many are afflicted with some would see that “preference” as the only thing they see. Die hard Walmart employees see blue everywhere they turn so wouldn’t it be nice if your dog matched the employees. Your dog could be a walking billboard for Walmart when he/she is in the store. I’m really sorry that this happened to you. I think you should call an advocacy group/agency at the very least. I’m not really into litigation for one time incidents but this is really off the chain in my opinion. Remember something. Walmart has cameras everywhere. You should see if an attorney can get them to save the video for that night for you. I’m not sure who you called but I ALWAYS CALL THE CORPORATE SUITE AND TRY TO SPEAK TO THE CEO’s SECRETARY. I have found this person to be the most effective at achieving results in any organization. There should have been some video of what took place that night. If there was merchandise where you all were there were certainly cameras. I’m not sure how long they save it so if I were you I would get a disability lawyer to get on it as soon as possible. I felt so bad for you when you fainted. Please be well.

One way to see it is to screenshot it and then use your two fingers to enlarge the picture on the screenshot, not on the video

Also, dogs are attuned to the emotions of their masters. It doesn’t help when Veterans (with paperwork and vests) show such.

I have worked in a few retail stores and have never been given any training about service dogs and how to deal with them, I think this is totally wrong, every employee should have training on this so we can all avoid things like this happening.

Walmart’s own notice says only manager and greeter can ask if the SD is for a disability. Followed by “Associates are not allowed to request documentation” so that was a lot of associates out of line.

Walmart was sued years ago for kicking a person with a service dog out...they won millions...it was determined by the courts that Walmart greeters were allowed to ask the 2 questions....is it a service dog and what service does it perform...once you pass the door greeter no other employees are allowed to ask or say anything to you...

This is ridiculous. I've gotten panic attacks before from teachers, and just about had them fired. It's bad enough having your very well behaved service dog denied access to a public place but even worse having a panic attack over the whole ordeal. Service dog education should be mandatory for all employees!

I work for target and as far as I know we are not allowed to ask if your dog is a service dog. I know its against the law to ask or refuse the animal entry to the store!

I do think it’s best to protect my husband and his condition to always have our dog vested. It just keeps down the unnecessary engagement with outside individuals including store employees. There are so many service dog imposters they are probably on high alert now.
