Walmart is not going to hire more staff to make up for the removal of self checkout. Customers will just have to wait in the lines longer as usual. The Walmart near me has 20 checkout lanes, but there is never more than 3 open at a time even during the busiest times.
@WebDesignSocal... Whatever it is, it's a good idea Now the government needs to begin arresting and prosecuting people by giving criminals real jail time. I would never shop at any store that is only self checkout.
When they put self check out kiosks, they said it was just a convenient "option" and that you were still free to go to the cashier lane. Then when the kiosks weren't being used enough, they started getting rid of cashiers, leaving one or two cashiers and a loooong line in them to force you to go to the self check out area. Now that they see they have theft problems with people abusing the system, they now remove it to go back to cashiers. It was NEVER about convenience for the customer and was ALWAYS about increasing profits by replacing cashiers.
How else do you expect companies to gain more money by hiring human cashers. Like seriously, in the long run the stores that do that will have to be closed down due to lack of income.
It is not the tax payers job to protect the goods at Walmart. Stores got lazy stopped having cashiers, guards replaced with greeters that could not stop a thief if they wanted to.
@@zed4229Unfortunately you must be too young to remember a time when stores in this part of the world did not require armed guards and it was just the natural order of things that anyone who worked would earn a living wage? ....And there was affordable housing and a homeless person was a rare sight.... Believe it or not Walmart has a corporate policy of greeters to NOT be intimidating and for the store staff to never get in any altercation with criminals and other shoplifters!...
@@stevebell4906 Yeah, when beggars where something you heard about in poor countries or in the past, not something routinely encountered at freeway exits and grocery stores.
Depending on the store it is as little as a 4 self-checkout machines to 1 paid checkout assistant to as much as a 10 machine to 1 paid employee ratio, so it is still worth it in the store's eyes in some cases to have 1 paid assistant to oversee multiple self-checkout machines.
This was the Walton's poor attempt to try to automate the cashier jobs. As if The Waltons are not making enough profit already, this move motivated by greed is a total flop
Which is cheaper having cashiers or self checkouts that is losing money to stolen goods.. Is the money lost from thieves is less then paying cashiers..? Then let it be..
If you think Walmart's issues are bad between self check-out & actual cashier lines. Take a look at the debacle going on with the Amazon brick & mortar stores. There's a little bit of everything in Amazon's story. It's quite interesting, but funny, yet very deceitful & a complete lie to their so-called technology in AI. They claimed that their AI system were running the stores all by themselves. There are NO check-out lines at all in Amazon stores for customers to check out anything they want or need to purchase. You just put the things you wanna buy in the shopping cart & their AI customer service does the rest. All you do is walk straight out the door. But do they... 🤔 I'll leave the rest for you to get a good laugh. 😂😜🤣 +Peace, Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😎🤘
Used to live in Newburgh Heights. I worked afternoons and would stop after work and see people lined up with overflowing grocery carts. I was like, are you in line? And they were like, nah, just waiting for our EBT cards to be refilled at 12:01 AM. I saw it, you see it, but they lie about it.
The walmart that's closest to me is a ghetto walmart. I say ghetto because there are a lot of items they have locked up because the thieves will steal them. I can drive about another 8 miles to a much better walmart where the same items are not locked away. Location, location, location.
Same here! The one closest to me has had a murder and a rape in the parking lot over the past few years and everything is locked up. I drive 10 minutes to Amish country and it’s a completely different world. People are polite, nonviolent, and nothing is locked away. Damn these ghetto people!
There have been some supermarkets and drug stores that eliminated cashiers after a certain time at night. Every time I filled my cart with merchandise only to find that self-checkout was the only way to pay for my items, I left my cart and walked out of the store empty-handed.
I hope this is a trend. I hate seeing 3 or 4 employees hanging around self checkout when there are registers closed, then get treated like a criminal when leaving the store.
Never should started self checkout. The prices are skyrocketing and there's no customer service anywhere. I don't shop at Wal-Mart so it doesn't matter to me but they should have known better.
I hated self check out when it started and I hate it now. My only problem is, Walmart better hire enough cashiers so one doesn't have to wait in line for 1/2 an hour.
A few Walmarts in the Minneapolis area close because of theft. We have a HY VEE store in a challenge area. They removed the Self Checkout, due to Theft. An Aldi store that was not that old, was closed in another Challenge area Due to Theft also.
Walmart is asking you to bag your own groceries (use to have baggers) and then has an employee look over your shoulder to see if your not stealing something....no thanks
I worked at CVS, we were forced. They kept track. I was told my register would be taken away if I didn't force more people to use self check out. That pissed me off and I didn't care, I took care of my customers.
@@traybern Before you think yourself clever and me dumb, re-read to first comment. There is no correlation with what you just said. It's about "who" pushed people to self -checkout. Workers and employees never did, it was the corporate owners.
If they would address the high prices of food (price- gouging) charged by these corporations that would change but the horse is out of the stable now 😒 I blame the Price Gouging Corporations for their Sinkage and I no longer shop their along with Target and other stores 😮
I made the out-of-towner mistake of going there when I was working in Cleveland. I had never seen anything like it- it looked like a hurricane had swept through- stuff just pulled off the shelves and left. The local guys said I was lucky I wasn’t shot/carjacked.
Half of the self check outs in my area are closed. I spoke with an associate and asked if they would ever open them again, they have been closed for about 4 weeks now, and she blamed it on staffing issues. Knowing Wal-Mart speak that means it's because of shoplifters
"Walmart in Steelyard Commons removing all self-checkouts," or in other words, "Walmart in Steelyard Commons restoring responsibility to its employees."
Actually there is no responsibility on the employee, if you catch someone steeling something you are not to approach or question the person, you are just to report it and move along.
Taking it you have never been or known someone who worked self checkout at Walmart because most dread having to work self checkout. 1 employee to like 8 registers. Answer questions, solve issues, help with items with age requirement, and monitor every register to see if someone is using one of the many scams to steal. Those cell phones customers try to accuse employees of texting on are actually work phones and your being monitored. You have no clue.
If you live in the area, one can probably come to the conclusion that it's mostly due to theft, if these problems persist in some areas, stores will just start or continue to leave. Most of the people that are stealing are not doing it out of necessity either.
@@kristenmarie9248 I'm surprised they're been dressing rooms available for customers for year's now, much less having one at all today, really. Granted petty theft in stores is worse today than it was years ago but it's really nothing new. There was a lot of shady shlt going on even back in the 70's/80's when I was in HS. Young punk kid's were hustling Levi's, leather jackets, albums, etc... all the time in school. So much so, I'd say they're partially responsible that places like Merry-Go-Round & J P Snodgrass went out of business as quick as they did back in the day. I wasn't down with stealing stuff, not even a penny. But I'm not gonna lie, I did buy a few pairs of those brand new Levi 501's & bell-bottoms for a couple bucks from those kids. Sorry, but I couldn't pass up a deal like that. I'm just saying... 🤔 Kid's would go into J P Snodgrass wearing a pair of their dad's jeans & walk into the dressing room with 7 or 8 pairs of Levi's in their hands. Then put on 3 or 4 pairs of brand new Levi's underneath the clothes they came in with & walk out the door. And most of the girls who worked @Merry-Go-Round were always dressed to the nine's. Those girls stole so many clothes from that store there's still probably a bunch of shlt in their closets they never even worn yet one time. Just saying & keeping it a buck! +Peace, Funk & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ 🤘😜🤘
I prefer self checkout. It's faster and I don't need to talk to the cashier. Bagging my items makes sure that nothing gets broken or smashed. People complaining about self checkout are pathetic. America needs more kiosks and self checkouts.
When consequences for thieving are too lenient, it only results in more thieving. Also, when you have a Country controlled by Itiot politicians who create high inflation, it magnifies the problem.
@@mlong9475 when Sam Walton started his marketing ploy was no more than Three in a line & another checkout will open. That was before my time, just read about it. Now living in a Major tourist destination & they never have enough cashiers. They realize you will wait in line & we do/ have. So glad for grocery pick up! Been doing it for over four years. Shopping this way has created jobs & sustains them.
I prefer self checkout, for one I don't have a stranger feeling up on my food, and 2, there's no lines, nobody waiting 3 inches from your back, breathing down your kneck.. and 3 it's literally 15 times faster to check out and bag all of your own stuff than it is to wait in line and have some worker do it. Thief's always gotta ruin it for the rest of us. Smdh.
The only place I've ever encountered where one HAD to use them was back when our Kroger's were still open 24/7 and that is all they had open on the 3rd shift (which was fine with me). Walmart was exactly the opposite when they were 24/7; cashier checkout only during the 3rd shift.
The more cashiers they hire then the fewer hours they’ll get because labor will have to be divided among the cashiers. A lot of times only 2-3 regular checkouts are open. And who wants to wait in line for 1 or 2 items when you have an alternate, the self checkout.
They should keep a couple self-checkouts so those with a few items can get through quickly. They are meant for people with a small number of items, not for full carts.
That's what most of the stores around my area do (southern Ca), it's weird hearing others don't do the same. As much as it irritates me that I can't use the self-checkouts if I have too many items, I'm glad there's that rule. We've all been behind that person who seems like it's their first rodeo (first time using the self-checkout) and they managed to pick up every single item imaginable that didn't have a barcode to scan. A mixture of both self and manned checkouts would be ideal, but sadly, this world is far from perfect.
My mom worked at a McDonald’s inside of Walmart 20 years ago and she said that every register at most times of the day and night had all open registers, if they can keep all the registers open then having no self checkouts won’t really be a problem with long lines if it’s some crazy holiday weekend
Who remembers Walmart before they had self-checkout so much stuff was getting stolen and it has parking spots for police officers. A lot of it came from employees but some customers too.
I live in a small town in northern New York State in the Adirondack Mountains near the border of Canada. I have all of my groceries delivered right to my front door from my local Walmart and I never even have to go anywhere. Great idea!
They either make difficult changes like these or they close the store. It sounds to me like that's what it's coming to. I'm surprised that store is still open tbh.
Fewer items in stock than it is supposed to have. That's your shopping pattern. If you don't think that's an issue, try using their app. If the store keeps losing money, it will close. They've completely closed off the garden gate door where I shop. People were loading their carts with big ticket items and exited without paying. I've seen people stuff duffle bags or gym bags that they've stolen from WalMart. If you didn't have an item in a bag that was in your cart, they would ask you to check your receipt. So what did people do? They would grab bags and fill them up, then exit. They installed facial recognition systems and people complained. What's a store supposed to do? I know, close. I like the self-checkout lanes. It's fast. I don't have to listen to someone on their phone etc. I'm in and out. I used to like to shop.
😂 That’s right. They’re to blame for many of society’s ills. Plus a wig a day means crime’s here to stay and the longer the nails means more shoplifting than sales.
@sorcierx2604 if you are scared that an extra 10 mins is going to put you in harms why then you should never had been there in the first place when was the last time you was at a fully staffed checkout store and had long lines .....that lady just talking to talk
I hope all retail companies remove self checkouts. Theft is ramped using self checkouts. We never had them when I was a child and we survived! Get Rid Of Them👍👍👍 Plus removing them creates more jobs for those who have to actually check out customers👍👍
In my honest opinion, Wal-Mart's self-checkouts need to be gotten rid of in ALL of the states of the USA. I miss the good old days back when all Wal-Marts had cashiers who would checkout items FOR YOU.
I shop at Aldi which has self checkout lines and have gone to registers that still have the previous customer items listed and not paid. The customer just walked out after scanning and bagging their groceries. 🤦♀️
Sad. The city should be doing something about that problem. People don't just become like that overnight and that problem doesn't develop overnight. It has to be ignored for a long time.
Wish my local walmart would re-open registers. They have like 500 checkout lanes with nobody running them then a self checkout on each end which stays jammed packed with lines blocking travel through the store while countless employees get paid to stand and stare at you as you wait and wait and wait and wait..... That and re-open to 24 hours since I work night shift, it was the best time to skip all the long lines for self checkout but they seem to want the slowest service possible and to make everyone wait in line longer than it took for them to get their items.
Walmart cannot afford all the law suits for false arrest. On the surface, it seems like a great idea, but it’s not really working. Yes, self-checkout is leading to a lot of theft, but their systems for catching the thieves is deeply flawed.
If that happened here I might actually shop at Walmart again. I live within walking distance but drive several miles to another store that will provide service. lol the woman is "frightened" to go through a checkout line?
Good. Too much theft happening and too many people who make innocent mistakes getting charged when they make a mistake because Walmart is too cheap to hire checkout employees.
So much BS. They are committed to the customer experience. Then they should of had more than 1 or 2 cashiers at peak hours instead of relying on self checkout. Keep self checkout but add more cashiers... win/win. The real problem is, that 2 associates running 14 self checkout stations is not enough to keep an eye on petty theft. So not only do they lose money there, but they also irritate all the other customers who do not want to take an entire grocery cart full of stuff through self checkout. It's so exhausting for them to blow smoke up our butts.
They removed them here in Roseville California then about a week later they got them back. My dad was pissed when they closed down at first, he uses those things everyday of his retired life. He hates having to wait in a line with one checker counter open and also dealing with humans, no thanks.
Shouldn't have had it in the first place !! Arrogant ass. Are you a business owner trying to improve customer experience. Self check out is a great alternative. Use it all the time. Some smug people like you think you are too good for Walmart. No one cares if you shop there. Not the point of the story
Self checkout was a way for stores to cut jobs. With the amount of money Wal Mart makes they can afford to hire more staff and pay them a living wage. Better yet, the workers should unionize.
I love self checkouts. I can scan the items in my cart without taking them out just to put them back in again. I have no issues with associates watching me. I'm in and out within 20 minutes.
I love that feature too. Sadly, there have been a couple of Walmart associates who have accused me of theft when I attempt to scan items without taking them out of the cart. This rude woman once made me take every item out of my cart and scan them one by one. Fortunately, I have not encountered this stain of humanity in a long time.
I can appreciate the first woman’s comment about wanting to get in and out, but frankly, I AM NOT YOUR EMPLOYEE. Hire actual employees and get things done.
Where is freedom in this, when a person doesn't even feel safe doing simple thing like buying grocery. There are better place out there than living in fear like this. Also agree they should hire more cashier, customers are not their employee.
Walmart was famous for having typically 4 or 5 registers open out of maybe 30 even during busy times. Now they have more people standing around all those self checkouts than when they just had cashiers! Sounds like a stupid business move to me. Now they are paying more people to stand around (on their phones) more money to do nothing. Someone needs to be fired for that stupid idea!
Fun fact: Walmart is getting rid of all self checkouts everywhere thanks to your usual suspects. The lines are bad at registers. (This is in California)
Wow you are the second person of Hispanic descent to speak on “the usual suspects” on YT today…. Here’s what I find ironic, didn’t Trump win by a landslide slide some years back making Hispanics specifically Mexicans out to be everything but a child of God? (He had to get votes right, which means a large amount of people shared his views) Last I checked that wasn’t your usual suspects crossing through a whole in a fence in Arizona or crossing the Rio Grande. It’s not “the usually suspects” giving NY the blues and increasing the crime rate currently. Point being there are POS from every background and walk of life, I’d rather judge people on a case by case bases.
@@zoomanx9661 they asked for it, much like the rest of the liberal areas with BidenBaboon felons and illegal aliens running around. hope they get their "fruit" picked
I despise self check out with every fibre in my body. Having cahiers is easy, secure, safe, commercially beneficial and generally a pleasant experience. Where there are self check outs there are fewer customers and fewer goods.
I would like to keep self checkout as an option. But clearly there are a lot of issues with it so I get why they are cutting back. I just find it funny that it was supposed to be the answer to their labor cost issue and now they're having to bring back people. It makes me wonder how all these other projects they're implementing to get rid of having to pay employees will work out for them. They'll be whining in about 5 years that that they can't make any money because people have found ways to working around all their AI to scam them out of money.
@@Liz-wz8dh Meh, big stores don't have labor cost issues, at least not when it comes to retail employees: they get paid chump change. They only pushed this because they wanted to squeeze every penny of profit.
I worked for 30 years in retail security from the 60s to the 90s. I left NY in 1986, now live in DFW area of Texas. When I saw that Walmart and others put in self checkouts I asked a friend who managers a small Walmart about his shrink. He said it went up a little. However self checkouts were fairly new. I said to him retailers must be nuts to do this. I assurd him and others that their shrink will go through the roof. This video proofs my point.
@@debrahelicke7204 But did walmart and the other companies push the labor cost savings they got when they first pushed out self-check outs to you? Did they reduce prices when they dumped millions in overhead. No, they pushed it into profit. But them losses due to scan skipping or mis scanned things those costs they pushed to higher prices. Self-Check Out is a scam.
Back in the '80s, there was a sign at the Walmart checkouts that said "You're always next in line at Walmart." There were a lot of open checkouts open back then.
I don’t do self checkout. I don’t work for the store and I do not get an employee discount. All those who love self checkouts will change their tune if they ever falsely get arrested for stealing. People just need to slow the f down. I was in a Walmart a while back and the line for self checkout was longer than the regular checkout. I had a cashier check me out and I was out the door before most of those in the self checkouts.
Self checkout is something I prefer, that way I pack the bags the way I like. I understand also, it can mean less employees, and theft must be really bad. Really should be two employees at the self checkout, instead of the usual one... four eyes plus loss prevention cameras should be able to catch the thieves.
The Walmart near me has about 50% self checkouts. When they first implemented them, they had left only 3 or so checkouts with cashiers. They now have the socks locked up in a case, so you have to now get an employee to unlock it and bring it up front for you. Must be a commonly shoplifted item in my area. I can't think this is going to be effective for sales and if it is, will need additional staff to deal with retrieving all the secured merchandise.
I love it! We pay for bags. Pay to bag everything and check out our own goods and they save on labor. How many jobs were cut because of those machines? I refuse to use them. But I agree with everyone's right to choose. If you prefer it then you go to them. I just want a bit of service when im spending my money. I now use the app and pick up all my stuff. I have them do my shopping and loading. I never over spend on things that might have caught my eye while wondering through the isles anymore. No more spending on clothing i really didn't need. Or shoes or anything else. I am able to totally stick to my budget every time and i dont step foot in the store.
My local home depot recently converted to 100% self checkout. There are a few employees milling about the approx 15 checkout stations, but it wouldn't be difficult for someone to steal some of the things they're supposedly buying.
