Hi Chantell, lol isn't that funny, I tend to prefer cooler colors (pinks purples), vs, hot colors like Oranges, Golden Yellows, and Reds. Although, I'm coming around on the lighter yellows, and even some red! Thanks for watching, and have a great weekend!

Try pulmonaria instead of hosta for shade. The fuzzy leaves discourage deer and I like the longer period of interest.

Unfortunately, every location near me has never had this type of selection, both quality and quantity. I feel like all our stores here in Maryland are not giving great selections of bareroot plants as they have in years past. Idk what’s going on 🤷‍♀️ On a separate note I agree with you on salmon/apricot colors 😍 I find myself being drawn to these colors more than anything else this season.

Hi Melissa, I found our Lowes, while still pretty stocked, had a bit smaller display then they usually have. I asked someone about it, and they mentioned that they ordered less this year based on sales on these items from last couple of years being lower. So that could be it. Salmon/coral is gorgeous in the garden!

Thanks for the Walmart inventory tour. I got some ideas as I was watching. You have a very lovely garden, and I know you deal with heavy deer pressure, as do I. Those flowers you were describing at Walmart make it more affordable to have a pretty garden. I hate the thought of planting an expensive plant, only to have a deer eat it. I bought a Marc Chagall rose at Home Depot last year, and the deer mangled it. 😡I'm going to spray deer spray tonight to start protecting my coastal NC zone 8a garden. Thanks for sharing all those pretty flowers!
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Jennifer, Oh those darn deer!! I left my tulips in ground last year along my front walk way. They gave me a gorgeous show, and I knew the mix was probably not going to come back as nice as last year, but I thought I'd give them a chance before ripping them out. Well last night we caught them on the door bell camera chomping the foliage like crunchy lettuce!! I sprayed today in hopes that maybe they just got leaves, but not any potential blooms. Sorry to hear about your rose. They do take some bites out of my knockouts in front if I forget to spray during the growing season.

@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi there, perennials from bare root may take a season or 2 to produce flowers, and multiple stems. By year 3, it's a decent size plant. Remember the saying in gardening, "the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap". Hope this helps.

A suggestion!: Maybe in the future you might want to share with your viewers some information about looking for dahlia diseases? These stores usually import their dahlia clumps and they have a higher risk of carrying diseases like gall. I think that a lot of customers will get their first dahlias from their local stores not knowing they might be taking home a disease that could spread to other plants in their garden. It would be really great if you could use your platform to share this info! I didn't know about this and now I have a whole bunch of tubers I'm going to have to quarantine this summer. 😟
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Leah, Thank you for you comment. As I'm doing these videos, my commentary is very organic. I speak from what comes to mind at the moment based on the plant i'm looking at, and mostly from my own experience, or from experiences shared with me. I have mentioned when plants are invasive, or are being sold in my zone but really shouldn't be etc. discussed how consumers should stay away from planting cleveland/bradford pear trees and so forth. While I haven't had an experience with gall yet, I will keep this in mind while I'm reviewing the dahlias. I usually mention what to look for in the packs, I'll try to recall to include this info as well.

Thanks for the great video. So inspiring. 🌺🌸 I noticed none of the bulbs or perennials have the growing zone? I’m in zone 2B-3 and find our area may sell items for zone 4 and up which would be considered an annual for us…so frustrating. Just wondering if your local Walmart wouldn’t carry anything that’s outside of its growing zone?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
This happens often gigi. I notice plants being sold in my zone that shouldn't be. Most times the individuals doing the ordering aren't gardeners, or aren't privy to this information. Its great that your aware of your gardening zone and can make correct decisions about what to buy and try growing for your zone.

I have a LOT of deer who love Hosta Salad. I got tired of clapping hands and yelling, "the salad bar is closed!" so I gave up on the Hosta and put in Brunnera instead. The deer don't bother them, but for some reason, after 2 years they're still not thriving in their new spots. I have 3 that turned a weird black color...a disease? I tried to research but still have no answers. I may have to throw up the white flag for those as well.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Kristy! Thats a great idea. I'm thinking this is the last of the hosta for me! I'm going to plant it under a tree I have closer to my patio, and from there, I can try Pots on the actual patio, after that there gone. I'm hoping to up my collection of lungwort (pulmonaria), and brunnera this season! I have a little of each already. The pulmonaria even has a few baby seedlings under it! As for your brunnera, here's my observations so far. Mine is a sunnier spot, the shade hasn't quite grown in yet. So they were very scorched last season, in fact of the 3 I believe I lost 1, and I'm down to 2 in that spot. I also believe they like consistently moist soil. The soil where I had them was a bit dry. Add to that the drought and hot summer, it was a brutal season for them. But see if maybe they come in better for you this season, perhaps switch their spot, sometimes a move helps. Thanks for your comment.

Inventory tours are dangerous I want everything, but so much is off my list, tired of feeding deer so hostas are a no go 😢. I would love to grow Lily of the Valley but I have hard time, they drove me crazy on Long Island with their invasiveness, but now that I have a place they can have free reign they won’t grow.
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi Terri, I know it can be right?! The good thing is you can see what might be available, and narrow down your list before you head in. Hopefully it helps a little with impulse control. I know I can struggle with that, and want ALL the plants. Thankfully that has gotten better as I've started to run out of space. Technically there's lots of grass that can come out for more plants, but my better half is not keen on removing sod lol Oh I know, I feel into the trap and bought more deer salad during this trip. Last year I'm giving Hosta a try. After this, I'm done in favor of other things they wont eat (fingers crossed). Isn't that always the way, now that you can let it grow it wont, the lily of the valley.

@@HookedandRooted that's the strange thing I am a zone7. Crazy right. The gladiolus is a huge growth. I split them every year. 🤷‍♀️

@pennysantana7809 Penny, you may have planted them in a protected micro climate, that's a touch warmer than your actual zone. The south side of a house is usually a zone warmer than your actual zone. 😊 I've seen Glads that were planted with rocks as mulch come back annually, in zone 5b. They survived for years. Then, we had a Bomb Cyclone one year, and it killed them.

Question…can u recommend a product to deal with slugs?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi there, While I haven't found anything to be completely effective, I have tried the beer traps. A bit of task since you have to dump them out and refill periodically. I also have used the pellets, the garden safe snug & snail bait. I think it works to some degree. This year I"m planning on trying the bonide slug & bug killer.

Do you dig up the caladium in the fall every year?
@HookedandRooted
@HookedandRooted Год назад
Hi, I've never grown caladiums before. This is my first time trying them. But if they aren't hardy in your climate, you would need to dig them up and store them. They are tropical/warm weather shade loving plants.

It's always listed in the drop down description below the video. Also, variety and inventory varies by location. However in general you get an overview of varieties they may be carrying near you.

Hi Patricia, Thank you for noticing, I appreciate your kind words. I started doing these a year ago as an orginal idea, but I knew it would only be a matter of time. Such is life. Thanks for watching! Take care.

Hi Alice, it might just be early yet. Here in Massachusetts (my gardening zone 6), I wont start seeing the summer blooming bulbs for another couple of weeks. Soon! 🤞

@CW I wish, it's clay soil here. And often brutal summers. Even the Japanese knotweed doesn't spread.
