I was hoping he would show what it does if you get in its way over and over and over on purpose. He got in its way a little bit and it tried to go around him I think? But I'm guessing that if some kids or someone keeps purposely messing with it and getting in its way, it will probably let an alarm go off, or make a loud noise of some kind to tell a Wal-Mart associate, "Hey come get these people off me I'm trying to work!"

@mercilessming8409
@mercilessming8409 6 лет назад
big red's outdoor adventures---Ah, you cracked the code. Lull the customers into THINKING you're servicing them more efficiently, but nothing's going to change. People are still going to put items back in the wrong place, kids are going to switch out items just because they can, etc. Once the robot passes the area, things can get mucked up and it won't get remedied until the NEXT pass-through by the robot, which could be 24 hours or so, depending upon how big the store is.
@mercilessming8409
@mercilessming8409 6 лет назад
MARCO NICA_505--How clean a Walmart is depends upon two factors: 1) how well the manager supervises the employees assigned to keep the bathrooms clean and stocked as well as the floor aisles clear of trash, excess inventory, pallets, and the detritus left behind by shoppers (empty soda cans, food wrappers, diapers--yes, diapers), and other garbage and 2) the clientele who frequent the store. The closer you are to a ghetto/barrio, the filthier the Walmart stores tend to be. The Walmart servicing Redlands, CA, USED to be open 24 hours a day to accommodate the many hospital employees who work in the area and the proximity to two major freeways--until the gang infiltration from San Bernardino, however. It is no longer open 24 hours and the new manager keeps the store clean, the shelves stocked, and the employees on task. That's a far cry from the filthy and dangerous place it used to be (although, honestly, it's still not all that safe after sundown to closing).

This robot would break down after doing a half an aisle at my store with all the plugged items, bad top stock, missing or flipped over labels and general out of place stuff like ice cream in the chemical aisle...
@Nighthawke70
@Nighthawke70 6 лет назад
This system is a collector, that's all. If it finds something out of place, it'll simply send an alert to the cloud where it'll be routed to the proper manager. From there it'll be assigned to a CSR and corrected. Just another ticket completed. Bottom line, they want to cut down on inventorying on quarterly basis. And attempt to get it back to twice a year, or annually.
@johnb6011
@johnb6011 6 лет назад
Nighthawke70 The issue I was pointing out was the fact that this robot would basically be highly ineffective if stores are not zoned right to begin with. I set mods every night and for me to come back the next night and it looked so trashed as to look like it hadn't even been set...the clientele at our location is Soo sloppy, found a corn dog from the bakery deli 2 weeks ago, expired in April where it lay on the shelf from a customer, DM obviously didn't care enough to notice and zoners didn't dispose of it. Walmart can automate all they want, in the end it comes down to human beings actually getting out there, filling the shelves, verifying outs/counts, and zoning. This robot would be pointless unless the entire store were inventory zoned every single day which given lack of labor isn't viable. Reports mean nothing if managers aren't doing anything about it. Just another useless piece of machinery to waste money on, how's those nice cash counting machines in the COs working out? Oh yeah, jamming out. Meanwhile, the company is going so far downhill. They have lost touch with their customer base and detached themselves from what customers truly want and need because they are desperately trying to future proof and compete with Amazon, they are more connected to Amazon then their customers and ultimately it will be their undoing.

Walmart thinks, hoping that eliminating these tasks might allow them to cut at least one person per department or close to it. I'm sure next step, their warehouses will start to be automated. It'll seem sweet to the guys back there at first. But, they'll notice, after the process is perfected, how it takes less people to everything back there. At first, it'll just be hey you can go home early. Sweet, an hour off. It'll be quite often, then a random extra day, then days and eventually people will disappear. Some will get lucky & get to move somewhere else. But, everything can be streamlined. They hope and sadly might be able to do it.
@SiisKolkytEuroo
@SiisKolkytEuroo 6 лет назад
They are not a charity, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're adding robots to replace workers. They could be adding robots to become more efficient and generate more income. (In this case, they are quicker to notice something missing from the shelf so they can fill it faster, thus selling more products.)
@CarFreeSegnitz
@CarFreeSegnitz 6 лет назад
Efficiency, efficiency! Now just 2% of the population can grow all the food where 90% used to do it. Telephone switching used to employ hoards of women but now a pizza-box-sized switch will do it all. Self-driving vehicles will supplant 3 million drivers and millions of subsidiary occupations. This would all be wonderfull if it didn't result in ever-greater wealth concentration... a few getting much, much richer while more and more slip into poverty. Walmart & Amazon: employing thousands more people? Or gutting small businesses with good paying jobs and replacing those jobs with fewer minimum wage jobs? It must be the latter or the economics of Walmart & Amazon wouldn't have worked. The consumer is temporarily thrilled that they can buy toilet paper for 10 cents less. Even more thrilled when they can buy toilet paper for 10 cents less again AND have it delivered. Consumer is quickly heartbroken when his/her job disappears in a fog of automation and efficiency. Automation isn't going away. Efficiencies are not going away. What needs to go away is the impoverishment of people when the jobs go away. 95% marginal tax rate on corporate profits and top wage earners. Socialized healthcare. Socialized education. Infrastructure investments to make work and strengthen the whole nation. Efficiencies are great but only if they benefit everyone and not just the top 1%.
@lightdark00
@lightdark00 6 лет назад
That robot is not replacing workers. It should be able to heavily reduce hours due to mistakes mainly. Customers move things around, and store employees block spots on shelves with other items so it appears nothing is out. It's win-win for the store, a win for the customer hopefully finding everything in stock. The best part is it can make those lazy employees accountable to get the items on the shelves. It takes a store a long time if someone disputes a price that rung up, that robot should help fix those errors. No one likes to be behind me in the checkout lane, as I know the price of every item and makes sure it's rung up correctly. I would be ecstatic if it came to my local grocery store that has loads of mismatched prices. It's like they are trying to cheat people that aren't paying attention.

The problem is theft and the computer can think something is in stock (and not reorder it) while the shelf sits empty. That is what the machine is doing - verification.

Do we want a United States of America twenty years from now to be scanning merchandise, cleaning floors, and laboring over other menial tasks? $1,700 for a robot is actually pretty cheap. I guess it's not cheap enough, as Walmart cut the contracts. If this thing had a 5 year usable life (average for electronics), then that's $28/mo for the robot, $134/mo for maintenance, $89/mo for insurance. That's $251/mo per robot. If 1 robot can replace 1 inventory employee that gets paid minimum wage for a month, that makes this robot 20% of the cost of the human employee... (but, you'd still need humans to fix product issues.) I'd guess there are other reasons why Walmart cut ties than cost. Maybe they didn't like the look of robots roaming their stores. Or maybe Walmart is planning to roll their own robots?

As robots take over more and more jobs and leave human workers with no source of income, eventually everyone will realize why we even need income at all. Since robots do all the work, why not let them work to support us? And if they provide for us, why do we even need money at all? First, products and services will be very cheap (because it will not cost as much to run a robot as it would to hire a human). Then as robots become self replicating and self-fixing, it will cost nothing to run them. That is when everything will be free - at least basic needs such as food, clothing, shelter, energy, etc. Anything else that requires human creativity and labor will rightfully cost money. So, for example, if you want a fancy purse designed by a human, you will have to pay. But if you just want a functional bag made by robots, then it is free. Think about it!

Henry TheGreatAmerican You are correct - we humans don't have a good record of using technology to liberate people. So far, every technology tend to increase our working hours while paying us a lot less. But I wanted to wake people up to this great potential so that they no longer buy into the lies that our masters have told us. That is, you need money to live. There's not enough to go around so you must fight for your slice. If we eliminate money then people will be lazy and not do anything. Etc. Without money for basic needs, most crimes will be severely curtailed or eliminated automatically: robery, theft, prostitution, drug trafficking, human trafficking, money laundering, fraud, most murders, etc. And when people's basic needs are met, other social problems will also go away:. Child neglect due to parents having to work night and day to make ends meet, no more homelessness/poverty and crimes associated with poverty, etc etc. That is what robots have the potential to do for us. It will take some time but I think eventually humanity will realize it and just don't care to use money as much anymore. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yeIgtpvFXcU.html

The crime will never go away. As long as someone has something others want, there will be some kind of crime (both legal and illegal crime). And since the world has limited resources, there will always be things not everyone can have. How do you determine what gets created? Will the robots make that decision based on their calculations of resources available? And how do you determine who gets these new gadgets since there won't be enough for everyone? Will we use a random lottery as a means to distribute rare stuff? Granted, the basics of life can easily be met such as housing and food, but beyond that it will be interesting.
@douglaswayne8916
@douglaswayne8916 6 лет назад
Henry TheGreatAmerican Like most people today, you are still stuck in the scarcity mentality born from centuries of conditioning by those in power to control you. Think about it, if you don't need money, can your boss make you work? Money is power. Take away money and you take away power. Scarcity may be true centuries ago but not with today's technology. Did you know that U.S. farmers alone can produce enough food to feed the entire world of 7 billion people? The technology that make that possible is called a Combine. So why do we still have hunger and malnutrition right here in the U.S.? It ain't because we are incapable of producing enough food! Also, the idea that resource is finite is a myth - the earth alone has enough resources for everyone, not to mention the moon, Mars, and the asteroid belt that we are already beginning to explore. Example: oil has always been underneath our feet but it was not considered a resource until the 20th Century when we invented machines that need it (Industrial Revolution). Silicon was not considered useable until the advent of the Integrated Circuit and solar cells in today's computer age. Lithium was also useless before until the invention of lithium batteries to run our portable devices and electric cars. All these raw materials were junk to us humans until someone came up with a use for them. Then all of a sudden, they became valuable resources. What am I getting at? The earth has plenty of raw materials that could become resources when our brain come up with a use for them. It's only limited by our imagination and human imagination is limitless! What raw materials are considered junk today but will be a valuable resource when someone comes up with a technology that needs it in the future? Oil will be used up but we will replace that energy source with solar....or some raw substance we consider to be junk today because we haven't figure out how to use it yet. In regards to crime, yes there will always be crime but not nearly as much simply because there will be no need to steal when everything is free. Anything that can be mass-produced can be free. The only few things that cost money are unique things but those are niceties not required for survival such as a Louis Vuitton purse, a Ferrari, Rolex, etc. Sure, there will still be thiefs stealing Ferraris but how many versus hungry and desperate people in the ghetto today who need to feed their babies so they must steal groceries? Again, AI and robotics have the potential to create a better society even if it won't be a Utopia.

Except people will suffer in a shift. And these companies do this for profit. It goes against them to make anything free. You're only thinking about one potential. We're at the precipice of either needing to get rid of capitalism. Or one where a small group of people can get rid of everyone else. Or where the very few maintain power and even states will fail. There was a recent article about right now. How some view tech companies as too big to mess with. About how government's have failed to curtail these businneses from literally breaking the law. The companies start a business and count on being able to handle the government enough that they government eventually has to side step and lose. What you hope for is a 50/50 outcome at best. And truthfully there's Manny more possible outcomes. And regardless, especially in the u.s right now. The transition will hurt a lot of people. This isn't being pushed by the government as a public good. Or by nonprofits. This is to reap the most benefits to companies, by paying people the least(nothing, except for the people designing it for the time being) As well even in this Utopia. It could needlessly make humans obsolete. People that believe in robot overlords or one good machine never stop to think "do we need to make human thought unnecessary" . Tho I guess it's more like humans themselves

What exactly is one supposed to "figure" about California and Walmart in particular when the issue is clearly and obviously global and far beyond those two entities? Is it because you figure it's easier to impose your view of politics to any issue as a petty form of scapegoating?

I like how comments like yours have 3 likes including mine yet the people b!tching have 30+ likes. Just goes to show you what this country is made of.... stupid people. Now for those complaining.... get back to your job at Walmart and enjoy your $12 an hour. Oh yeah, that's the funny part too.... people b!tching about if they are going to make $7 an hour or $15 an hour..... I wouldn't go to work for either. If I'm not making $100 am hour, I ain't getting out of bed. And this comes from a high school drop out straightened out his life so no excuses from anyone else!

liberal cities will never allow robots to replace their illegal immigrant workers. if robots take over they cant defend immigration anymore.

@@EpicDrake LMAO I'm going to put this on one of the forums I hang out on. You are correct, maybe I should go back to making $8 an hour so they don't take as much out of my pay. lmao Now that right there is funny. Or is it sad that someone is that stupid? To the people making $8 an hour or $15 an hour or even $25 an hour...... STOP!!! You've got to start making some real money! Clean houses at $35-$90+ an hour. Do lawn work at $35-$70+ an hour. Be a flipper and your pay is unlimited! And by flipper, I don't mean burger flipper. Or, make excuses why you are still broke and blame the government because they won't take care of you!

I highly doubt a few things about what this robot is meant to do. Items are ordered automatically based on counts and if it's not on the shelf the product's generally scheduled for shipping (unless distribution is out of stock or there's a count issue). Scanning outs is probably going to be inaccurate due to customers moving things around (which they do a lot). A Department Manager might get some use out of this information (perhaps helping with section work), though I don't see this being too effective unless the store is always zoned (which won't be the case).

I guess this waste of time was never used, as years later Ive never seen them, anywhere. You know and I know that after Walmart opens, the shelves never look that organized, it turns into a hot mess. My Walmart always looks like it was hit by a cyclone. Move those boxes just to mess with the robot. 😂 And that robot is very slow. In a super busy store, its going to be hit by carts and people. This is human stupidity in motion.
