Jacob, I have watched several of your videos and wanted you to know that you're probably the best in making patterns with the end grain, rather than just gluing pieces together. Thanks for taking the time to do this video. I love padauk.
I’ve made a few cutting boards for sale, and just recently made one for a family friend which came out beautiful and now I’m going to make a few more and donate them for a raffle for a club that I started 20 years ago, called old Pueblo, gun fighters, cowboy faster hopefully this will raise funds for the club. Your videos are my inspiration. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge your skills your beautiful work.
I hope to be as good as you one day, at making end grain boards. I'm getting pretty good, but your knowledge of how to make patterns, and all that, is unmatched in the woodworking community.
I appreciate the kind words! It's all about building as much as you can, reading the grain and dialing in your process. Also creating for you and not necessarily what someone else is going to like, of course that's always an added benefit. Happy sawdust making 🦾
Another great video on cutting boards, makes you want to turn the lights on and try more ideas. I like the hand hold idea for a jig, I'm going to make one with the leg buttons and the hand hold. Super instruction.
Pretty board, man. I’d actually have a hard time putting a knife to that. In my home, it probably would be displayed in the kitchen or the living room as a piece of art.
I have made a number of end grain boards, two different patterns, for my family. A total of 9 boards. Mine is the only one that has been touched by a knife. All the others are on display in the various kitchens. I freaked one sister out when I had her board on the counter and asked her for a sharp knife. I wouldn't have actually done it, it's her board. I'm pleased they are so happy with them.
I’ve watched a bunch of cutting board videos recently and yours was one of the better videos. I like your choice of background music, not too much talking, etc. And the board is beautiful!
Thanks for the feedback, I am working on trying to find the balance in my videos and hopefully they will continue to improve. I Appreciate the support!!
Gorgeous cutting board, as others mentioned it is a piece of art. I am about to make a board myself and you helped me out with your videos a lot. Thank you, and keep making beautiful boards to make us happy.
I watch hundreds of vids just to get 1 tip 😁 your 1min 41sec is fantastic. Thnx. Its a lovelyyyyyyy board. Well done. The grain pattern is stunning. Tim from OZstralia .
I absolutely LOVE this board and I’d love to try to replicate it as much as possible. I think I can get the dimensions of one of the boards when you put the tape measure up next to one of the boards. But even with relative dimensioning I can’t get the widths that make up the second board. You don’t know them do you? It would help me out a lot to recreate this whole cutting board. You are truly a craftsman.
For anyone asking for sizes of each board prior to gluing, I believe he is not saying because he probably doesn't want you to make the exact same one. It doesn't really matter anyway, you can make them any size and it will still turn out great, just difefrent. Once you make one, you will see what I mean. Then you can start to plan them so they turn out similar to what you have in your head.
Great idea for a different style cutting board. I might have missed it in your video, but how long are the boards. And did you choose the width of each board at random? Thanks for you help.
Jacob, Beautiful board and a rich and detailed video to help try it ourselves! Thanks for sharing, I’m anxious to see the other patterns as well. Best regards!
Thanks for watching Nilton! I have a lot of original designs still to share, hopefully I will continue to improve the video and explanation side of things.
I like your choice of wood combination. The only problem would be with the Padauk. As it ages, it turns more brown and it loses that "pow" factor when you have it with other woods.
Looks great. I am having a problem in that the padauk is constantly secreting oils to the surface. I can constantly wipe off orange residue. Do you have this issue with padauk and if so how do you handle that?
I think that's the prettiest cutting board I've ever seen! Thank you for sharing! Update: Okay I just saw two other of your cutting boards, the Ombre End Grain Cutting Board video. They're fabulous too. Hard to pick which is better. Their all great! Apparently you crank out these fabulous boards all the time. I'm new to your channel and just subscribed.
Like the board and design. I noticed the length and width of the boards when first glued up were 27x12.5. Can you provide the width's of the walnut and padauk individual pieces? I like the contrast of the walnut and padauk, and might try a board with walnut and maple as well. Thanks.
One of my favorite combos is Paduak and maple together, great contrast! The bleed-over is a problem that I can relate too! My best advice is to sand with a little less pressure where those sections are, and gently hand sand to finish.
I just used Paduk for the first time as well. Lots of bleed over. I definitely agree with using less pressure. Also, I'm thinking of covering maple with painters after I sand it first (I'm experimenting with edge grain "Cleveland Browns" boards so my maple is straight down the middle so I can tape it off easily) then moving into the Paduk last. Not sure if it will help, but hoping so.
It is really great piece of work, even some can say piece of art. It looks great and when you watch this you want to make something similar yourself. I have one small question: When you oiling the board do you reuse excess of the oil for next projects?
I reuse the oil until its all gone, endgrain boards do get thirsty. They act like a sponge and drink a lot of oil but whatever is leftover is used on the next one.
Good morning, first of all I wanted to tell you that I miss your videos, which are exceptional. I also wanted to ask you if it is possible to know the measurements of the padouk and walnut strips that make up the two boards. I hope to see some of his videos soon, which are a source of inspiration. Good bye.
Just found your channel. Wow. Just wow. So admire. Im gonna try to emulate your artistry and skill. May I ask...how much can you sell that work of art for? Honestly, would anyone actually cut on that? Its gorgeous, lol
beautiful work! watching your video, I noticed you use Titebond 2. Titebond 3 is more waterproof. just wondering why you don't use that product instead?
I use titebond 2 "dark" for all of my walnut boards, it hides any remaining glue lines. Tiebond 2 is water resistant (titebond 3 its "More" water resistant hence waterproof) According to Titebond's website food safe and can be used for cutting boards. I've never had one fail.
Youe patterns are awesome. They have really inspired me, cost me a lot of money and given me something to look forward to. Thanks for sharing. Btw, what state are you in? Love your opening scenes.
I usually wait until its about 90% dry, when the board is a little damp it can actually help make sanding the endgrain a little bit easier. I actually did an Instagram giveaway for this board, but it would have sold for around $250
Hey there!! The winters here are somewhat mild but we still get a good bit of snow and cold temps. I don’t really have a good heat source, I use a small propane fire and my hands usually loose feeling at some point, lol. One day I hope to get a wood stove set up. As far as a camera goes, I am using my iPhone in 4K, I am planning on adding a GoPro soon and sort of upgrade as needed.
Salve, bellissima realizzazione, stupendo l accoppiata dei colori dei legni, specialmente il paddock che con il suo rosso riempie tutto. Spettacolare. Sarebbe interessante il link, dove poter acquistare quella essenza di legno. Complimenti. 👍👍👍👍😊
Once you reached end grain, you chose to flatten via router vs using your planer? Any specific reason why? Less margin for error especially entering and exiting planer was my thought? Or blades on planer hitting end grains isn’t as good as router? But I am interested.
Dude...you are doing some excellent work. Would love a video of your shop and the different things you have there. Loved to see you kid, dog, and the area surrounding your shop. Beautiful! One question. Never seen someone use the planer as a jointer the way you do. How "successful" is that technique for getting straight 90 degree sides? Thanks and keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks for the kind words! My enviroment definitely lends itself to the work I produce, nature always keeps me connected and inspired! Ive had good luck using the planer as a jointer, I try and cut my strips a little long to allow for any snipe but otherwise its great way to get a clean edge. You just want to make sure your workpiece is close to 90 beforehand, and don't stick a wonky piece through, hope that helps and thanks for watching!!
First off…. Man I just came across your channel…. And I’m in awe….these videos are awesome for a small maker like myself! Quick question sir, When u made the initial glue ups of both panels…. How king are they… and how king is the overall board after final glue up?
