In June 2017 Rob Ball and Karen Shepherdson were commissioned to make photographic portraits as part of Cliftonville’s Walpole Bay Tidal Pool’s 80th anniversary celebrations. These photographs contribute to both Ball and Shepherdson’s practice based research, considering how diverse coastal communities make use of democratic, free seaside spaces and how the medium of photography can contribute to innovative, positive (re)presention, (re)interpretation and (re)evaluation of previously disregarded coastal sites.
Karen Shepherdson is Reader in Photography at Canterbury Christ Church University, and in this rôle directs the South East Archive of Seaside (SEAS) Photography and co-directs the Centre for Research on Communities and Cultures. Her practice-based research which is centered around photography, curating and writing. Visual catalyst for her work resides in the coastal environment and critical to that practice is working close to home - being part of a diverse and complex coastal community.
Rob Ball is a Senior Lecturer Photography and Deputy Director of SEAS Photography. Rob makes work about coastal communities and as a practice-based researcher Rob’s output is predominantly visual, frequently realised in the form of exhibition and publication. Dreamlands was published by Dewi Lewis in 2015 and his latest book about Coney Island was released in 2017.
