Walpurgisnacht ("Walpurgis Night" or "the night of Walpurga/Walburga") is a traditional holiday celebrated on the 30th of April in both central and northern Europe.
In Germany the holiday is celebrated by dressing in costumes, playing pranks on people, and creating loud noises meant to keep evil at bay. Many people also hang blessed sprigs of foliage from houses and barns to ward off evil spirits, or they leave pieces of bread spread with butter and honey, called ankenschnitt, as offerings for phantom hounds.
In Sweden typical holiday activities include the singing of traditional spring folk songs and the lighting of bonfires.
In Finland Walpurgis Night and May Day are effectively merged into a single celebration that is usually referred to as Vappu and that is among the country’s most important holidays.
The origins of the holiday date back to pagan celebrations of fertility rites and the coming of spring. After the Norse were Christianised, the pagan celebration became combined with the legend of St. Walpurga, an English-born nun who lived at Heidenheim monastery in Germany and later became the abbess there. Walpurga was believed to have cured the illnesses of many local residents.
Walpurga is traditionally associated with May 1 because of a medieval account of her being canonised upon the translation of her remains from their place of burial to a church circa 870 a.D.
Although it is likely that the date of her canonisation is purely coincidental to the date of the pagan celebrations of spring, people were able to celebrate both events under church law without fear of reprisal.
As requested by legion malacite :)

"There is a mountain very high and bare, whereon it is given out that witches hold their dance on Walpurgis Night" The _Harz_ is the centre of german witch legends. "Stories collected in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries show that the region's mythic reputation reached beyond Germany. From France to Scandinavia, countryfolk traded fireside yarns of strange happenings on the Brocken, the Harz's highest peak. Rumor had it that Europe's witches gathered there on Walpurgisnacht, May Eve"

German was my major at the University. I had heard of Walpurgisnacht as a pagan festival there, and always thought of it as such. Tonight, I checked the Wikipedia entry on Walpurgisnacht, which emphasizes the Christian aspect and sort of downplayed the pagan celebration on the same night as Hexennacht (Witches' Night). This was confusing to me. However, M. Marie's explanation that the pagan rites are much older than the Christian makes more sense, as Christianity, when it spread through Europe, absorbed the pagan festivals and converted them into Christian holidays. Thanks very much for the clarification. Only recently did I discover Faun and I really love their music. It is rousing and fun and has a sort of mystical, idyllic, German Renaissance/pagan feel to it. They must be wildly popular at Renaissance festivals. I look forward to hearing a lot more of their music and I will look for similar groups.

People in some parts of Europe hush away the winter at this evening in April. It's celebrated with dance, fire and processions. People of Germany also believe that witches are very strong in this night and that they gather for a celebration in central Germany (Harz Mountains). At the 30th of April many people of this area come together at the Brocken (Harz).

This song really hits the nostalgia spot I really loved celebrating Walpurgisnacht bc our Kindergarten made a whole village event out of it, with stick-bread (you wrap dough around a stick and grill/ "bake" it over a fire), witch-costumes, games, rhymes to learn and recite for a treat, hand-made nettle-tea (with nettle leaves we collected beforehand ourselves), witch-themed food, and so on

This has probably already been pointed out but I still think it’s a cool fact. In the Harry Potter book series, Voldermort’s group of followers, the Death Eaters, was originally called the Knights of Walpurgis. I also find it funny bc if you know Sirius Blacks mother was named Walburga Black, which is very similar to Walpurgis. She was also in attendance at Hogwarts during the same time Tom Riddle/ Voldermort was there too, and probably knew him before he became Voldermort. She was also probably a member of the Knights of Walpurgis.

Haha yes and no.not really Halloween. We light fires in that night and spend the majority outside if possible have some get together time. I remember as a kid we had also made fresh bread of the fire, hang up colorful ribbons in trees and Bushes and made flower crowns. In tradition the fires were lit to distract the witches from descending the Blocksberg and coming to close to your homes (because surprise ~ witches were feard for most part haha)since all witches were gathering that night at the "Brocken" to celebrate the change of season some even call it honoring and celebrating the earth goddess which turned later on into an act of chasing evil spirits away ...there is a lot of background info on this too long to post here haha. We also had an cartoon character (a little witch) series called "Bibi Blocksberg" ^^ sadly now in these newer generation i think this tradition will fade (started already in my generation when i was born so I'm not even sure if some people still do that at all😅). It is not a whole german thing mostly Saxony anhalt and Saxony (if people had ancestors in anhalt)

In some areas of Germany, children (and only the children) dress up as witches, then go from door to door to collect sweets, rather like Halloween.

American here, I dont speak German but have listened to a lot of music in other languages, and your right, as far as the German language is concerned it seems a lot softer and maybe cleaner than a lot of other german songs.
