Today we sit the MXR Phase 95 (4 Stage Phaser) and the EHX Bad Stone (6 Stage Phaser) next to the new Walrus Audio Lillian Phaser and see how similar or different they sound.
We run through several scenarios including clean, dirt into phaser, and phaser into dirt.
1:23 - Playing Starts - Demo of width differences
3:44 - Clean sounds
10:11 - Dirt into Phaser
13:27 - Phaser into Dirt
20:32 - Final Thoughts

This was helpful. I’ve contemplated selling my Bad Stone to “upgrade” to a pricier pedal, but I don’t hear a significant difference in sound quality and it’s about as versatile as it gets.

Paulitik Dont know if you ever decided or not, but I got the Bad Stone after already having the Small Stone. The Bad Stone has a beautiful crunch element to it that I really enjoy. And it’s easy to dial in the “color.” Pretty bad ass.

Always fun to watch folks move that "manual shift" knob on the EHX Bad Stone. It does nothing until you switch to manual mode. But good demo dude! Thanks. Bad Stone for me.

Walrus did an amazing job on the Lillian AND Julia , effectively focusing the EQ's and ranges to the useful and musical.It seems to be something that Walrus tries to do with most of their effects, but was particularly noticeable with that pair, I suspect because most familiar are used to a lot more tweaking to find desireable ranges.It's a brave yet logical move, as,- along with flangers,( no doubt, next) they are NOT "bread and butter" signal processes that every one uses or has.With phasing, it's going to be applied subtlely, as a "color", or basically control the entire composition,- the same commonly going with it's opposite modulations.(chorus, vibrato, flange). Like EHX's Electric Mistress, it does it's own thing, and is the better for it.

It's so weird I bought a phase 95 as one of my first pedals, and keep trying other phasers in an attempt to upgrade but can't find anything to dethrone it. 1 knob does not seem like enough parameters to manipulate but somehow it just nails it every time. MXR did a great job on this pedal.

Yea, the Phase 95 is a keeper for sure. One of my favorites in that category.

Thank you, always appreciate your work! I have two of the three here, and the Lillian is certainly on the want list! If I didn’t already have the Psilocybe & Tractor Beam already is run out and get it today. Looks great! (PedalCrazyFool)

Snap! Hadn't heard of either of these. I bet the TB is awesome :) Sad that VFE closed down.

Tri Pedal Reviews - that Tractor Beam is really, really sweet. It’s like the Lillian in certain ways, but has its own thing going for it. The Psilocybe is just cool, because, you know, ‘shrooms...

The thing with the width knob isn't intended behavior. I think it's doing that because the filtering effect is sweeping through the fundamental of the guitar, but it then immediately goes back up (hence the uweh-uweh). I believe the extended width range of the knob is to let it play more with bass.
@jdjk7
@jdjk7 3 года назад
It may also be accentuated by running the distortion into it. Watching another demo where somebody runs the Lillian into distortion, it doesn't do that when width is maxed.

Effectyness. Love it. Haha, I might have to retry a bad stone. I love a small stone so much, but I feel I can never rely on any sort of EHX product. I think the lillian stands out in being different, and it may confuse people who have used phasing for so long. But like the Julia, this is meant for newer player that aren't too familiar/like the effect normally. What Flanger they do to complete this trilogy should be whacky. Good sounds, thanks!

You find EHX unreliable?:What about, the foot switches? I know that's an area they've improved, lately, and while you might accuse them of not keeping up with the market, I've always found them sturdy enough,- unless you're just thrashing them.That's why you see 25 YO versions used ,all the time. (With the exception of the newer plastic wahs/volume/ expressions,- the mechanical, internal parts are plastic; terrible idea.)

@Chris Greene I've noticed that , and also that you get an illustration of how basic component qualities effect overall fidelity, including in bypass.Because I do sometimes like some " Lo fi" / Vintage sounds, it's not always a deal killer, but point, otherwise, taken.You have to figure that, outside of their broader distribution network, there's going to be some compromises at their lower price points.I would never use their newer digital effects,- better are widely available.

I never noticed the difference in sweep width in the Lillian before... interesting. Makes the Lillian sound more considered I think.

Never put a phaser after a drive. It makes an analog pedal sound digital. MXR is still king for me at half the price of the Lillian. No brainer

Hey there. Checking out some of your old demos because I love pedals and just buy , keep what I like, and then sell what I feel is not there if you know what I mean. Phasers are another tough one for me but one of my first pedals was the Bad Stone and while I don't use it that often(I wish they would do an upgrade with an expression pedal or something), this pedal is a keeper. Super dark stoner kind of phasing which works great with distortion and reverb. The MXR 90 was the one I bought and just couldn't find the groove on it, too clean or something, annoying. I would definitely like to check out the Walrus. I think they make great stuff, but I wind up selling almost all of their pedals. They are maybe too good, I don't know. Right now, I found a good deal on the Wombtone and find that both exhilarating and frustrating, but it is super cool. Pedals are definitely interesting and keep me in the game. Thanks for your demos. Enjoyable and informative.

Good luck on the hunt! I haven't tried the Wombtone, but would like to some day. I've found that I like my phasers simple. Any more than a few knobs and my enjoyment level tends to go down lol The Biphase is an exception to that rule. Which reminds me... I need to demo that pedal!

Short explanation at the beginning was nice. Maybe not always necessary for everyone, but that’s what time-stamps are for! Overall, I rank them Bad Stone>Phase 95>Lillian, although the doubling back lfo was pretty cool.

I’m a new subscriber and I dig your channel. I found it when researching Phasers. I have a question, I use my amplifier’s distortion (EVH 50 watt EL34 version). Should I put a Phaser before my Input or in my Effects Loop? Since the Dirt is coming from my amp.
@TriPedalReviews
@TriPedalReviews 5 лет назад
I like my phaser after dirt for a more pronounced effect. Whether that comes from a pedal or amp doesn't really matter. So if it were me I'd run it in the loop. But there are no wrong answers. I'd try it both ways and see which you like!

@@TriPedalReviews Thanks a lot! I'm building up my pedal chain slowly and there is a lot of info that's not that easy to find. I guess most people just experiment but I just wanted to know what you thought since you seem to know so much about pedals, I will put it in the loop. Thanks again.
@TriPedalReviews
@TriPedalReviews 5 лет назад
@@richardaaron4454 No problem man! Most people do experiment, but they generally follow a basic guideline. When first starting out I'd follow guides such as the below www.guitarplayer.com/gear/pedal-order-by-the-numbersplus-the-pros-on-pedal-order I usually follow something along those lines to start out and then figure out if I have any "exceptions". Just depends on the pedals you are including and what you want to achieve. In general if you want an effect to come through in the mix more you put it later in the chain. If you have any questions or need advice feel free to reach out. I may not have the answers, but happy to give you my 2 cents whenever! Have a good one.

I use a MIM Stratocaster, Fender Princeton, I think this was a Big Muff. The 2 dirt pedals I nearly always use is a Big Muff or Metal Zone, cause I get a kick out of people complementing the tone of the MZ lol. But I think this was the muff ran in front of the phaser.

I usually run a rat in front of the phaser but I'm gonna have to try it with the big muff. 👍

I prefer the Lillian, as a bonus the vibe is useful for lofi texture when at a very low rate with fuzz through it so it has more uses then just being a phaser.

Grand Orbiter, this is not even a question. Even some chinese pedals can play around Lillian they really f*cked this up with that pulsing sound.
