From Season 1 of Walt Disney's Disneyland Anthology program we have Episode 13: Monsters of the Deep which originally aired on January 19th, 1955. Walt Disney begins the program with a discussion on dinosaurs and how the studio first studied them in the film Fantasia. We then get a behind the scenes look at the making of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea film hosted by Kirk Douglas and Peter Lorre. The rest of the episode is devoted to a retelling of the film Pinocchio with emphasis on the scene with Monstro the Whale. Due to copyright restrictions the following scenes were removed: a clip from Fantasia, the squid attack scene in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and the extended clips from Pinocchio. All of these films are available on Disney+.

This is great. 20,000 Leagues is one of my favourite films. Love Peter Lorre.

I wonder if Walt Disney knew that Pinocchio would today be considered the pinnacle of animation and has stood the test of time very well. It was a shame that Walt wasn’t interviewed more than about Pinocchio during his lifetime. It innovative animation has inspired so many Disney artists over the decades.

After it became clear that the film was going to be at best marginally successful in its initially release (due in no small part to the outbreak of war, which prevented it and other films from being released widely in the world), Walt thought that the film lacked what he called "an intangible something".

I read that too in the autobiography that Bob Thomas wrote. What did Walt mean “Pinocchio lacks an intangible something”? Another book said that the novelty of an animated feature might have worn off by 1940.

I enjoy these as much as the movies they showcase. Thank you again for posting this. I suspect this year's Christmas is just going to be me at a computer watching everything on your channel.

Thank you for doing & sharing all my childhood memories, Sunday nights here in Canada, this was a staple watching every weekend, then we watched "The Beachcombers", or what ever specials CBC had on....

The animation from 6:46 to 8:06 is mesmerising.

Peter Lorre, first seen in "M for Murder" in Germany a very suspenseful drama.

I remember this one. I watched it on Disney Channel back in 1998. It was a kind of rerun or something seen on what they called it “The Disney Vault”. If it wasn’t for this one, I would never have gotten Fantasia & The True Life Adventure Series in my Disney DVD Collection. All I need now is So Dear To My Heart which is where that Sea Dragon or Fire Breathing Sea Serpent came from. As for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea & Disney’s 2nd Animated Feature Pinocchio, I’ll think about them in time.

"I've never been braver - I fight sharks, cannibals, a giant squid, women - but the bravest thing I do is to open my mouth and sing. Believe me, with a voice like mine, it takes a lot of courage." And we admire your courage, Kirk. RIP

"Pinocchio" was actually re-released in early 1954, not late 1954/early 1955, unless that re-release was still going on at this point.

Well, I’ll believe Dick Wesson telling me it’s still playing in theaters in early 1955!! 😉

It was also still being distributed by RKO. It would not be distributed by Buena Vista until its next re-release in 1962. I would think, though, that "Pinocchio" would have been out of theaters again by this time. Wesson said that "Pinocchio" was "NOW playing in theaters," not that it was "STILL playing in theaters."

@@michaelharrington4503 That’s a technicality. Now = still if it was playing in theaters at the time of this episode. You are bound and determined to correct all of my errors aren’t you? Also, why don’t you create a blog to show off your knowledge instead of using this channel as a forum to display it?

@@keepingwaltindisney First of all, I wouldn't know the answer. For all I know, it may still be have been in theaters. Hindsight is 20/20. I'm not correcting your errors, I'm pointing out what I heard in the video. You're not the one making errors. As for a blog, I actually do I have one, but I don't think anyone has ever seen it.

Thank you for showing us a full show. But it would’ve been nice if we actually see Monstro the whale in person.

I showed as much of the Pinocchio clip as I could, while staying within copyright restrictions. Please watch the film (in color) on Disney+ or buy it on disc!
