Agreed. When I saw him in "The Sunshine Boys" I couldn't stop laughing at him. He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for that film, but he ended up losing to my favorite actor who isn't dead, Jack Nicholson, in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest", which I think might be the greatest performance to have won that award. As much as I loved Jack in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (the first role he was in that I truly admired), I thought that Walter Matthau was so hilarious in "The Sunshine Boys" that he deserved to be nominated because he should have had some form of award for comedy like that.
Yep! Hasn't been like that in many years. I enjoyed watching Johnny, Merv Griffin, Dick Cavett............even David Letterman in his early years. These days Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon, and Colbert just put me in a bad mood....way too political. Can you imagine if Johnny Carson came on and all he did was rant about Richard Nixon for an hour?
@@noneyabizz8337 Same here. Like Johnny, he was a quick thinker. Different interview styles but just as funny as Johnny. His personality was also different from Carson. Ferguson's interviews with Robin Williams were extraordinary. Both riffed off each other at lightening speed. I miss them both. Wish Craig would come back to annoy the censors again lol.
@@howardford6991 how is Jimmy Fallon “too political” when he was criticized for not taking jabs at politicians like Carson, Letterman, and Leno. revisionist history at its finest. you’re just cherry picking to like some out of touch old head. laughably sad.
@howardford6991 Johhny sound go after everyone regardless of politely affiliation. He was fearless and a true generational talent. I really liked Jay Leno as well.
@@repent.sinner Think how lucky those of us who used to watch Johnny when he was here were; also before bed. Soothing voice. For sleep.... Jason Stephenson has get to sleep vids. Pretty soothing too. zzzzz 😌
Walter Matthau and his son Charles were both clients of mine, both lived in Pacific Palisades. Walter was a very gregarious and nice person; his son, not so much. I told Walter that one of his lines in Charley Varrick made my Dad laugh so hard he almost broke a rib. He asked what it was, so I told him it was in the scene where he was in a Vegas hi-rise with a woman who had a round bed. The line was "I've never slept in a round bed, do you lay east, west, north or south?" When she replies, "Well, what did you have in mind?" he says "What I had in mind was boxing the compass," Walter admitted he didn't remember saying that but smiled and acknowledged that it was a funny line. RIP.
One time I visited my grandfather on the dementia ward, and he was sitting at the lunch table with a guy who was the absolute SPITTIN' IMAGE of Johnny Carson.
7:27 in the right hand top corner you can see the flashing signal NBC used to warn local affiliated stations to indicate an upcoming local commercial insert.
Ironic that an eye recovering, sun glass wearing Mr. Matthau talks of his poolside encounter with the Reverend Schuller. My one time speaking with him was at the Braille Institute of LA luncheon where he was wearing his “Coke bottle” glasses…
Every time I saw him at Santa Anita ---he was an asshole. He owned a stable an never had time to talk, even though I had a booth 3 rows from his and he would sit a drink half the time. Great sport
I enjoy many of your videos from marvelous Johnny and his guests. But, how is it possible you guys do not show the movie clips? It is important part of the show. How can you guys do not see this? Video is not the same if we don't see the movie clip. Reactions from guests and Johnny are not appreciated, nor the video. Thanks.
Fine comic actor. And often a good guest. But this movie plug put me to sleep. Whoever did the pre interview must have told Johnny he was going to have to turn on the charm and smile a lot to cover up this waste of 9 minutes. Oy!
