I met Jzck Lemmon when I was a Bartender at Chadneys Restaurant in Burbank in 1981 across from NBC Studios. A lot of Stars would come in and have dinner and a drink or two before crossing the street to appear with Johnny. He selected an Irish Coffee and a couple bought the drink for him on a very busy Friday evening and he walked through the crowd all the way over to thank them before leaving in his Rolls Royce with a license plate that said LEMMON. He was an amazing man and I was thrilled to meet him and make him his drink. We had a very nice conversation. He told me he was a Bartender himself before he got his big break in Hollywood. Love you Jack Lemmon.
I rhought n he was a Prick. He played Golf [charity] In my home Town Palm Springs Came late/hungover and belligerent. He ordered us around likje his lackeys. Glad when he left, Dean Martin on the other hand was a gentleman
It's notable that thousands of clips from "The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson" are ten thousand times better than just about anything on any talk shows during the last twenty-five years. No one has done it better than Johnny Carson.
Craig Ferguson was awesome! Great interviewer, who made itfun for his guests. And his monologues and when he'd banter with his sidekick Geoff Peterson (his robot cyborg sideman voiced by Josh Robert Thompson) were always entertaining
Yes, it's horrible how conservative christians have become so hateful and want to indoctrinate kids with their beliefs. Seems like conservatives need to clean up their own house before criticizing others.
RIP Walter Matthau (October 1, 1920 - July 1, 2000), aged 79 And RIP Jack Lemmon (February 8, 1925 - June 27, 2001), aged 76 You both will be remembered as legends
I used to watch this as a teenager in the seventies. It was great seeing guests you love and Johnny making everyone laugh. In the eighties It became a favorite part of my night routine to watch this wonderful show. An American experience.
I am so grateful that I grew up in the pre-digital era. Great performers, great music, no selfies, no texting, no social media. I miss those days. I miss Carson and so many of his guests....... Great era, glad I got to experience it.
I 2nd Julianna. And Rox ... we also had Cheech & Chong at the very same time. And great comics like Jonathon Winters & Robin Williams. What an amazing dichotomy. An overflowing well of true rare talent in those days. I miss them too. Grumpy old Men was a treat to watch. RIP boys.
Jack Lemon's performance in the "Great Race" is one of cinemas greatest.Peter Falk is the perfect foil as Prof. Fates sidekick Max and the cake fight will never be beaten "Brandy! Throw more Brandy".Priceless.
Ah the nostalgia!!!! I love the memory of falling asleep hearing Johnny Carson every night! My dad loved watching him - I still have my dad and I am grateful!
@@lawncuttingplusdelta - no but I had a 1969 Camaro Super Sport with a Rally Sport (hidden head lites) package. 396 with a turbo 400. Factory power windows, console mounted factory 8 track, white vinyl top, green paint with the white rally racing stripe. I sold the car back in the day for $1,500.00 bucks and now I’ll bet that car is worth hundreds of thousands!
I have the exact same memories....was all cleaned up for the following day's work...comfortable and in front of the TV to see Johnny with a couple minutes to spare at 11:28 pm (sorry for detail as I am a Geometric Model Theorist)...I rarely could stay awake for the whole show...Especially liked Carnac the Magnificent...that "Mystic from the East",.... Sear, Sage, Soothsayer....I liked when the prediction of what was written in the envelope did not quite gel well for Carnac, where the audience let off all sorts of audible dissatisfaction, motivating Carnac to compose a good luck message for every audience member....such as: "May a crazed Auto Mechanic hotwire your Sister". I was Pop's Solo Caregiver for 2.5 yrs. before He died...Pops loved to watch Johnny too.....was Ma's Solo Caregiver for 8 yrs. before She died....was so glad to get those extra years w/them & to Serve (filial piety)...spend as much time w/ your Dad as possible so there are no regrets and of course Serve, as your Parents took care of you. GIVE HIM MORE THAN HE GAVE YOU, THOUGH MOST OF THE TIME I DIDN'T THINK THAT WAS POSSIBLE AS THEY SACRIFICED SO MUCH FOR ME.....Caregiving-- hardest & most rewarding work of my life...no more than 3 hours of sleep per night for nearly 9 years.....& I was grateful too for the extra time.....both of their end times were horrific...my brain suppressed virtually all of it...Ma flatlined 11 times through only half of the last day...Pops aged 30 years in only 1 day....stick w/your Dad through thick and thin...he'll be proud of you & you can make things easier for him......wish I could have served both for 20 years...didn't work out that way....😔 Today, I'm a 59 year old Orphan....A new & different angle than from before.... J.S..... Chicagoland
Carson is so responsive, it's amazing. He can go slow, and then snap back with some wit. He could actually hold his own against top actors and comedians. He really was the master of this medium, and so broad. Plus he can say no toilet jokes, and then let a guest go ahead. Carson knew how not to stop or direct people from doing something funny.
Walter Matthau and Jack lemmon are two of the most brilliant and iconic actors and Jack lemmon is a great director and they are so good friends and to be in so many movies together they absolutely make the movie so much better because they are so good friends and that is what makes great movies I wish we had more movies and actors that were friends like them today because no one can ever beat their comedy or anything if they do ever again God rest in peace all of them
Are you really serious about Johnny Carson being gone as well?! I never heard that he had passed away. I just thought that he wanted to retire, and play Golf like Dean Martin, and not work anymore.
I miss all of these guys so much!! Johnny was such a good host and always got the most out of his guests!! Mr. Lemon and Mr. Matthau are by far among my favorite actors!!! I've lost track of how many times I've seen the grumpy old men movies!! You can see in this interview the kind of friends they are... More like brothers than friends... Makes perfect sense that they would be buried in the same cemetery less than 30 feet apart... RIP gentlemen.....
I've always Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau both together and individually. There will never be a great comedy duo quite like them. Anything that they're in together and individually is pure gold. RIP to both of these legends along with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon.
Jack and Walter were perfect in all their movies. Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men were both just hilarious. Those are definitely laugh out loud movies. Loved them both.
What a wonderful interview! I love that we can watch these shows! There is nothing like it anymore. These shows make me laugh out loud, they are timeless!
Class acts...all three. This segment should be put in a time capsule. It will be seen by future generations that there was a time that genuine intelligent conversation was not hard to find on television.
There are scenes that tear you apart. The scene in Days of Wine and Roses where Jack is trying to repay his ex father in law some money he has borrowed is a master class. All the remorse, loss and regret expressed in a few sentences.
Oh Lord! O Tempora O Mores! Never to watch this kind of true TV shows anyway today! Unfortunatelly! Two great ICONS in the same room at the same time! Bless them God Up in heaven! Walther Mathau & Jack Lemmon!💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
I absolutely loved Jack as Ensign Pulver , when he blows up the laundry room and throws Cagney's stinking palm tree overboard are classic. I miss him, Walter, and Johnny so much, true greats of their time. Walter always looked like a loveable wrinkled Bassett Hound that you couldn't trust, yet he had his own code of honor. My favorite grumpy old men ever. As a caregiver, I deal with them everyday.
Caregivers are brave and selfless Earthly angels. Be mindful of also giving good care to YOURSELF. . . take time to indulge in some self pampering. Good food. Abundant sleep (if possible) and luxurious bubble baths with wine and candles. ❤
@@QuadMochaMatti Even on a pension, a wine is easy, a bubble bath is easier...and candles are as cheap as. It is the attitude one has to these things that makes it appear to others, a very costly or luxurious thing to do...but the secret is...just do it.
Could not agree more. The Out of Towners almost eerily predicted what NY would be like 50 years later. As for the original Taking of Pelham, only a real NYer, like Walter, could play the sarcastic Police Lt as he did. How lucky were we to have Jerry Stiller and Walter Matthau playing NY cops!
Jack Lemmon, the quintessential gentleman of the silver screen. Some Like it Hot, The Fortune Cookie, The Odd Couple and his supporting role in Mister Roberts, were some of my favorite Lemmon movies. Hollywood will never have legends like Lemmon and Matthau ever. These two both played off each other very well.
Watching JC I get completely lost in his conversations. He's so respectful, gracious and comedic that ya can't help but be enthralled. When he retired from the show, you knew that his shoes could never be filled.
The Great Race! Multi role film that shows the versatile genius he is. If you haven't seen it, it is an absolute must! Perhaps one of the greatest comedic films of its era and beyond!
When my daughter was 4, 1998, she started watching their movies from the 1990s; eg Grumpy old man etc. She felt in love with them. She came with up with a nickname for them, “ the funny boys”, she still calls them by this name to this date.
Wow, I am getting old, I can’t believe the algorithm put this up for me, and then I actually watched it, and then I watched the whole thing. I miss the old days every once in awhile.❤️
I adored Walter ( and Lemmon ) when I was growing up in the 80s and I still watch the movies. Just a brilliant comedian and actor Old grumpy was my favourite movie when it came out. I still laugh my ass off This was something I had never seen. Thank you thousand times 💕 What a duo of love and happiness and so much laughter I'm going to rewatch the movies I miss both so much
One of the greatest comedy teams to ever exit...Matthau and Lemmon...God rest their souls... I'd love to see their kids Chris Lemmon and Charlie Matthau, do a movie together. I hear they are good friends like their Dad's were and I just have this thing about heredity and the 🍎 apple not falling too far from the tree.
Both of these Gentlemen are legends in showbiz industry. And are now Buried practically next to each other side by side. RIP Jack Lemmon 😔 RIP Walter Mathouew 😔
Always have been a big fan of Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau . They also did the great classic which help to launch the 70s tv show? The Odd couple. May they both ? Rest in blessed peace and thanks to them for giving us some great movies that are timeless.
Love this ... the 80's were great for a lot of reasons but one of them was the cool fact that culture had a great crossover in that it is close enough to us, where the movies and technology still resonates, images are in color but at the same time society and entertainment also was still filled with the big stars from the Golden age of the 30, 40, and 50s and the WW2 generation was barely retiring. It just connects a century of America in a way. And Carson basically showcases that America.
Sort of makes me glad that I can't afford a TV or cable now. I'm surprised that any of the late night shows are still going, based on what I had seen of them some time ago.
Two big, big, favorite movies, starring Jack Lemmon: 'Some Like It Hot' & 'The Apartment'. Both actors have given us many fantastic performances. Many thanks to them & to Johnny Carson. 👍
Three greats! Jack Lemmon talking about Fonda, Cagney and William Powell, in the presentence! I was just a kid back then, but had I been older, I would have felt this great sense of fortune knowing that all of these classic actors were still with us.
The mention of Matthau in a neck collar (neck brace) after his accident on the slide - anyone remember the "Fortune Cookie" ? In that movie ("Whiplash Willie" in the UK) it was Lemmon in the neck collar, etc - Matthau , as a shyster lawyer, trying to get a big pay-out for Lemmon's supposed injuries - Matthau got an Oscar - very funny movie - Lemmon was (naturally) great in it, too.
Both actors are great and ve maný movìès. But they nèver dìd Some Like It Hot together. The actors were Jack Lemon,Toñy Curtis, Mariĺýn Monroe IT is so funny
Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthaw they were the best comedian actors in America and in the world. Very funny men and talented people. the giants of comedy. R. I. P. 🇮🇹
I was born in 1968 and I used to go to my grandma's house back in middle school in junction City Oregon I'd watch The tonight show, starring Johnny Carson at 11:35 every night. And in 1992 I watched his very last episode
One of the greatest moments of humility from the Hollywood world I’ve seen was Ving Rhames winning a golden globe in the same category that Jack Lemmon was nominated, and Rhames brought Jack Lemmon on stage and gave him the award. Both men are class acts.
Thank you for mentioning this! I just found the clip and enjoyed it immensely: The joy of EVERYbody in the room at the gesture was unbelievable! I don’t think any other actor ever did anything like it…..
@@l.w.i7478 and with all do respect to the man, ving Rhames wasn’t exactly a high profile leading man or not who Hollywood would put in that role where he’s going to get another opportunity to be nominated let alone win that award again, so he likely knew that was the one and only opportunity to accept that award and without any hesitation he graciously elected to pass it to Jack Lemmon
