Legendary blues guitarist and songwriter Walter Trout played a show on his "Broken" tour on Sept. 5, 2024 at Richmond, Virginia's Tin Pan music venue.Trout and his excellent band (John Avila - bass, Michael Leasure - drums, Richard T Bear - keyboards, and Brett Smith-Daniels - guitar) played an awesome set. This video opens with a bit of Walter's new song "Courage in the Dark," featured on the "Broken" album. It then moves to a very personal tribute to the late John Mayall, featuring Trout's classic song, "Say Goodbye to the Blues." Trout was a member of Mayall's Bluesbreakers band for four years in the 1980s and he tells the audience (with some non-bleeped verbiage) how it was a rough time for him in terms of addiction and alcoholism. He credits Mayall, whom he referred to as a father figure, with turning his life around. Other reports also point to a meeting with Carlos Santana, when Trout was with the Bluesbreakers, as a seminal moment in Walter's path to becoming sober. Still, Trout eventually required a liver transplant about a decade ago. After almost a year of recovery, including learning how to play the guitar again, he's been steadily recording and touring. All of us who love the blues are thankful for that. Hope you like the short video.
