In the elevator scene, the driver knows that what he's going to have to do to the bodyguard and knows that once he does it, in front of Irene, she is never going to see him the same again. So this was his only opportunity to kiss her and show her what she meant to him. Look at his face after he stomps the guy and looks back at Irene. He knows what he's done and is ashamed that she had to see it. It's a really great scene. The lighting and choice of camera angles are phenomenal, not only in this scene but the entire movie. Every moment in this film was meticulously thought out.

That makes sense! Thanks for clarifying that scene for me!

I know this is late but I wanted to share my 2 cents on what I think of the driver. If you notice during his violent encounters, he seems to improvise it a lot. He isn't an insanely trained hitman from years past, he's only the driver. Another thing to think about is during his interaction with Nino's thug at the strip club. He's visibly shaking and breathing uneasy, because he's very clearly not used to his level of violence before. I think this added character depth did a lot for my enjoyment.

Hmmm I can see that, and definitely adds to the character for me as well!

"I'd Crush a Million Skulls..." could be the title of the greatest love song of our times. Right up there with "My Heart Will Go On"

He couldn't be singing "City of Stars" in 2011 because it wasn't written. He tells him how Shannon got injured and it is a warning and a threat. Why wouldn't you trust him, he is taking care of those he loves and the woman thief isn't trustworthy either.

He do the right thing and go away. She would never be safe around him, his expression says everything.

Saw this at an advance screening & we had no idea what the movie would be. Stunned. Definitely arthouse, but was as mass appeal as an arthouse film can be I think. And this was also the first time I had seen Oscar Isaac. Was hugely impressed by him.

That sounds like fun! I definitely wasn't expecting arthouse

despite being remarkably late.. as this is one of my all time fave movies, i thought i'd throw an interesting BTS fact about why you didn't get a full on Nino death scene. it's bc perlman quite literally broke his knee when he first walked out into the ocean water trying to crawl away and a huge wave knocks him over, his knee slamming into a rock. you can actually see it in the footage in the movie b/c it happened on the first and only take. so due to his injury, they weren't able to go fancy with diff closeup shots etc b/c, well, he broke his knee. but it think it's fairly obvious to imagine that he didn't make it out alive.
