Luckily for me my best friend is just as obsessed with this movie as me. And my whole entire family adores this movie and musical. We’ve all gone to see it twice together
@@nshanson7674 its a joke god and are u qualifed to say that no i was joking and he was a tormented soul yes mudered 2 people but loved christine i make fun of scary situations as its made up 😣
Am I the only one who loves how he swooshes the cape around? He gives it life more than other things that were in the movie to the point it’s practically a character of its own.
"No Raoul! Not like this!" - Christine. So don't kill the Phantom and don't cuff him up or something, but let him go free and Raoul and Christine goes straight into the Opera house- the Phantom's domain- to catch the Phantom. The common sense here didn't link lol.
Kitty Flare Christine's biggest character trait is her compassion, even for a rage-fueled killer like Erik. Like the previous commenter, I believe she truly loved Erik, and would have stayed with him had he not been violent - but even if she didn't, she would never let someone be killed on her watch.
This is probably the least logical story in a musical ever. Thank goodness the singing makes up for it, but there are so many numerous plot holes and spots of really questionable logic
Man, this scene always gets me - because how awful for Christine, that she can no longer think of her father without the Phantom trying to corrupt it, trying to insert himself and his manipulations into it. He uses the memory of her father against Christine, and just... how awful, because you know later, after it was all done, she would have to carefully set those memories aside.
@@daynacooper1163 not even near from Sierra and Ramin 😂 there are many pairs that are way better than the movie ones, like Gina Beck and JOJ, Davis Gaines and Dale Kristien, Harriet Jones and Geronimo Rauch... and counting more
Wandering child, so lost, so helpless, yearning for my guidance Angel or father? Friend or phantom? Who is it there, staring? Have you forgotten your Angel? Angel, oh, speak! @@scotthamp384 I am not offended. I do admit that it is not needed, and that it is your opinion. I know that everyone's opinion is different. And I prefer the singing over the sword fight to be honest.
+crazeedogs I would say to both of them "Erik Raoul quit fighting over Christine and start fighting for both of us seriously? one of you has to take me as the bride"
Honestly this song that they sing together is the best scene I thing in the whole movie. The way they both sing together and everything. It’s just amazing and perfect.
It's perfectly fine to root for the villain, or to like the villain more than the good guy, but those in the comments who are literally denying that Erik is the bad guy.... He literally murdered two people. The stage manager and Corlotta's lover. You don't have to like Raoul, but he is for sure a better person as he hasn't killed anybody. Also Raoul is a far better suitor for Christine considering Raoul doesn't pretend to be her father's ghost, kidnap her, or threaten to kill a person to make her his girlfriend. . Long story short, you can certainly prefer Phantom over Raoul or even root for him to beat Raoul, but saying that Erik is the better person or partner is delusional.
@@wiltblush4136 Erik kidnapped her, attacked her, pretended to be an angel sent by her father, pretended to *be* her father in order to kidnap her again and tried to force her to be with him by threatening the life of someone she loved (and no he doesn't win points just for not going through with it, simply *not* forcing someone into a relationship isn't worth a medal, especially when you were initially going to do so).
Funnier still when you consider ALW actually massively downplays the extent of the Phantom's murderous insanity in his musical versus the book. He kills a bunch more people, attempts to cook alive Raoul and the guy who raised him for trying to save Christine, and also tries to blow up/burn down the opera house while it's filled with hundreds of people. And then you get demented loons being like 'oH thE PhaNTOm IS so rOMAnTIc'
@@Blisterdude123Tbh the musical meant to be more romantic compared to the book, and honestly yeah no The Phantom is a manipulative killer, though I think people like him more, or at least I do, because in a twisted way, he did it all for her, because even in the first scene him scarring Carlotta away made a spot for Christine to shine, in his own way, he showed his love for her, and I will point out, he has a compelling backstory, being a monster to everyone since birth, he just embraces what everyone makes him out to be, he plays the part of the monster, not as his true artistic self, it’s still fucked up what he did, considering he has at least two confirmed kills, maybe perhaps a dozen from the chandelier, and terrorizing a whole Theatre, but we feel for The Phantom because many can relate of wanting to be loved, only to be turned away, and he’s even more tragic when you also consider that his mother gave him a mask as his first piece of clothing. TL:DR: He’s a incel prick, with a tragic backstory, and a very (*TWISTED*) yandere-like love for Christine, and we honestly feel for him because he had a tragic upbringing that we can relate. And also because he’s cool and angsty.
AngelsPirate he hasn’t had much human contact (other than letters and stalking Christine) in a long ass time, so it’s reasonable that his sword fighting skills are a bit rusty.
It would’ve been way cooler if Erik disarmed Raoul first, but then Raoul dodges the death blow and strikes Erik on his masked side, causing him to recoil and hold onto his ‘face’, giving Raoul time to retreat, lift a speechless Christine onto his horse, and narrowly escape the Phantom’s wrath.
The phantom was clearly the better sword fighter for most of the fight tho. He only lost because he wasn't stronger than Raoul. When they binded swords at the end of the fight, Raoul overpowered and disarmed him.
erik has better sword skills than raoul, he was desarmed this is completely understandable but i think he didnt want to win, 'cause in christines eyes he is an angel and, at least, in human eyes, angels dont kill
While the stage version is lot better with this scene, there is one improvement that makes it make more sense. That is the song just being between Erik and Christine. In the play, Raoul just watches the Erik hypnotize her for a while before waking her up. Here he just arrives on the nick of time before Erik's hypnosis completes
@@la_esmeralda444 I think what they mean is that she's very entranced to the point where she forgets where she I'd. She's not hypnotized, just entranced
I know they had Raoul win the fight and be in a position to kill Erik and then have Christine step in to protect Erik all to prove that through it all, she still cared for Erik, but I think it would've been much more powerful (and much more compliant with Erik's character) to have Erik and Raoul's positions reversed. Have Erik win and be in a position to kill the man who he knew all along would take Christine's love from him, but have him spare Raoul for the sole reason that Christine wanted him to. He would've had every reason to kill Raoul, would've been mere inches away from doing it, but realized Christine would never forgive him if he did it and therefore let the boy live. Idk, I just think it would've been much more poignant and thought-provoking. Also Erik is supposed to be good at everything, a true unearthly genius, _especially_ in the art of fighting and killing, so it also literally just doesn't even make sense to have him lose to a boy half his age lol
That's actually kind of how the ending of the book goes. The Persian and Raoul are done for as they drown beneath the house in the lake, Christine pleads to the Phantom to spare their lives, out of his love for her and the joy that has accepted to become his wife he complies to her wishes. Then as he is weeping at the hem of Christine's dress she cries with him and lets him kiss her forehead, something no one in his life had ever done and that's how he decides to let Christine free with Raoul and even gives her the ring he bought for their wedding (Erik's and Christine's) and tells her "this is your wedding gift, for you and for him, from your poor unfortunate, Erik"😓
Erik is saying to Raoul as they are swordfighting " is that the best you can do , i am the angel of death , come on monsieur , don't stop , don't stop , She doesn't love you , She loves me "
Honestly I love the sword fight it’s less ridiculous than throwing fireballs and I love watching a fight between Christines suitors, It just shows the rivalry between them.
While I think a part of the reason she tells Raoul no is because Erik still has some hold on her but I also personally think it’s she doesn’t want a murder in front of her father’s grave
This is some weirdass version of the musical where Christine just wants to enjoy two men fighting for her. 🤣 Btw I have a feeling that they didn’t make her call out to the Phantom to stop because for some reason ALW hates the name Erik, and her calling him “Phantom” would sound weird.
1. ok I NEED to know how did Erik learn sword fighting XD 2. everyone keeps saying CHRISTINE SHOULD'VE GONE WITH THE PHANTOM. but I'm like okay, where? to his cave? and live as hermits that terrorize a building whenever they are feeling spicy? raise their children there, having swimming lessons in that dirty af water? like. okay, imagine Christine chooses the Phantom. what happens THEN? they sing, they go all the way, maybe Christine gets her very own Dramatic Wooshing Cape... and then what?
Lol. Fair point. Phantom didn't have a lot going for him at the time besides his voice and charisma. Financial stability and a non-basement type place to live was at the bottom of his list. 😂
plus having to put up with dead bodies all the time and wondering when the Phantom is going to get mad at her and strangle her--as opposed to marrying a nice wealthy guy who is a count and she gets to be a countess
Erik is a complete *genius;* he can fight sword (the novel doesn't say that, though), he's an architect, musician, 100% artist, and a magician. Besides that he's intense, lovable and gives his soul to EVERYTHING, including loving, protecting and raising Christine. The problem is that anybody gave him the chance of showing his genius because of his deformed face; he was abused by everyone, including his mother. Minus his "insane moment" in the ending, which was cured by Christine's kindness, he was OBVIOUSLY the best choice. And his cave isn't dirty, he was planning to buy a house for them as in the novel. Well, anyway 😂
Megstar360 oh my sweet dear you if you love sword fighting than I implore you to watch the one in The Princess Bride. Three times as long and 10000 times better😃😃
Okay, I just noticed that Raoul smirked at Phantom. I really love this song so much. When I was a kid, I said " If you stab Phantom, I will jump through the telly and stab you". I also sad "Your lucky Roaul, your lucky I can't jump through the tv"
One question. Why is this comment section (as well as all others of this movie): 45% people loving the version and the actors 45% people hating literally everything from Gerard's voice to the fight 10% people throwing random facts or comparing the musical/movie to the book And I am just confused, still trying to enjoy stuff tho
People who watch this movie and think Raoul is the hero are insane to me. It's called The Phantom of the Opera. It's not called Fairweather boyfriends who hang out with you once your old boyfriend helped you get famous.
I sang this in Choir earlier this year and I couldn't help but thinking of Raoul and Erik sword fighting. Because there's this senior in my choir that sounds exactly like Raoul and another one sounds like Erik so during practice, we couldn't help but laugh
The Kingdom of Sparta is clearly at war with the kingdom of Atlantis, so both kings chose to duel instead of having their armies fight. Clearly Ocean Master and Leonidus are wise rulers.
You were a KID, so it makes sense. Thankfully you grew up, i guess? When i was a veeeeery young child, i also rooted for Raoul, i'm very ashamed to confess that. Today i'm free and i know that Erik is better.
He escaped scot free after a bunch of murders and psychotic stalking and terrorising an opera house, I'd say he got more than a semi-good ending all things considered.
Semi good ending: 2 weeks with Erik, 2 with Raoul. Like in Muslim families when a man has more than 1 wife, and shares his time equally, LOL. Why we, women can't do that??
It does set up precendence for Raouls physical capacity to go and fight and survive various traps which in the musical isn't as well established but it is in the book
I can't hold this scene of the musical, i found it kinda nonsense because Leroux Erik would never pretend being her *father* (the angel, yes, but father? Nope). But, i understand what both Christine and Erik feel on this scene, and i hope some annoying brainless people can understand that Erik is not "perverse", evil or anything like this. Christine lost her father, she is sad because of it. She is alone. Erik loves her more than anything on his life, and no, it is not "obsession" or false love, use your brain a little and try to understand the message of the Final Lair and how much noble Erik always was. Erik pretended to be her angel of music because he was afraid of showing himself as a normal man, he was abused and shunned for years and he just... doesn't feel worthy anymore. Only at "The Final Lair" is that he understand how much human he was and let her go because he loved her more than anyone did. Anyway, he wanted to protect Christine. He HATED to see her sad, defenseless, lonely... he saw himself on her. Being her "angel" would protect her, but once he falls in love with her and shows himself as a mortal human (and the feared The Phantom of The Opera), Christine started to feel uncorfutable at his side. It is not her or his fault, she was only scared. Erik thought "so, not being her angel but a man scares her? So i'll be a pathernal figure". The musical is veeeeery poetic and romantic, so no, i do NOT believe he was literally pretending to be Christine's father, he tried to be some kind of pathernal figure to make her happier, and then he could marry her. He had a horrible life and his father didn't love him, it is not his fault that he doesn't know how to deal with emontions. If you blame him for this, you're a jerk. The same way Christine was scared and sad missing her daddy, Erik was abused all of his life and he couldn't adapt 100% to a normal life. Both did wrong things based on what they lived, if you blame Erik and defend 10000% Christine... hipocrisy, is that the name?
Right, and let's not forget that in a good long term relationship we're not only the romantic lovers of our spouses, but their best friends, even each-other's mother/father sometimes, giving comfort, solace, support each-other's career, etc.
Does anybody notice how the color of their clothing represent good and evil like Luke vs Darth Vader ? Or perhaps freedom and open vs strict and closed ?
This version of wandering child will always be better than the 25th anniversary one. Adding Raoul in just made no sense and it didn’t sound good at all, it sounded so messed up, I couldn’t tell what was being sung, the only good bit was Ramin coming through at the end with that low note. In this you can actually hear what they are saying and it focuses on Erik and Christine
+Emii64 True, but he shouldn't have been chosen for the role if he had never had singing lessons. POTO is a musical that can't afford mediocrity. Gerard was chosen for sex appeal, not singing talent. Sure, he can carry a tune, but you have to be able to do more than that if you're playing the title role of this musical.
For anyone who thinks Erik would not have lost this fight, I fully see where you're coming from but A. Erik probably hasn't fought against another person in awhile and B. He had Raoul on the ropes for pretty much the whole fight. Raoul literally just get lucky with being strong enough to disarm him.
Raoul ruins everything. Christine walk faster to your fathers grave before Raoul comes. I love how Raoul falls after jumping and the Phantom lands perfectly on the ground.
Because - as much as I love this movie - it was poorly done on many levels. See Lindsey Ellis' video on the Schumacher version. A lot of it was ALW's meddling tbh. I think the cast did their best with what they were given. As far as the disfigurement, the mask he wore for Don Juan just physically wouldn't work. It just doesn't cover it all. And when she takes it off, you can see just before that there's... something there underneath, and a wig/hairpiece comes off with it, but still. In the 2011 stage version (might still be on Netflix?) he's wearing a completely hooded cowl for Don Juan and it just works much better physically speaking. I mean, obviously the Phantom is not Piangi in this version, but with the hooded cloak, there's a lot more anonymity.
