Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune (Retrospective + Documentary) 

If I walk into an arcade and I _don't_ see any Wangan cabinets, my ass'll be straight turning 180 degrees and walking out.

There needs to be an Xbox and PS4 Port of all the Maximum Tune games

1) I thank you sir for getting me to relive my memories since WMMT2 in half an hour. 2) I thought China being a version late and blocking google was bad, didn't know North America had it so much worse.

For those what's this game is running on NAMCO SYSTEM ES1 - Runs on a ArcadeLinux (e,g Debian or Ubuntu like from the Asia-Pacific Version) NAMCO SYSTEM ES3 - Runs on Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 (On Japanese Version)

I'm honestly just glad this game has returned. I played a lot of 2 in Canada back in 2006 and have always had trouble finding machines to play when I came back to the states after college. Thank you for raising the awareness and greatness that this racing game brings. It's my absolute favorite arcade racer hands down. Well done on highlighting a lot of the iterations.

Great work! When I first saw WMMT, I wasn't sure what to think at first. Plus, I thought I couldn't handle the loud noise in the game unlike the way I can nowadays. When I started playing it for the first time at Brunswick Zone Homewood (they're out of business now), it drew me right in! I couldn't get enough of the Tuning Card system, the official soundtrack, the story mode, and the feel of the game itself! It became my favorite racer to date! Then the years went by and I felt my location stuck me and other fans with the middle finger; they replaced it with these Fast and the Furious cabinets which instead of cards, you had the option to customize your cars and use a number password to store it. Honest to say, remembering your number password is a chore because you might have to start over on the off chance that you might forget it. That said, between WMMT and FATF, I'd be more than willing to give the former more of a shot with the BANAPASSPORT card. I find it more easier and more fun to store your car memory that way instead of having to keep it by number password.

When Maximum Tune 5 came back in the States, I got into the Wangan Midnight franchise by watching the anime series and reading the manga itself. When MT5 was released, they changed the logo of each Maximum Tune games to remove the Wangan Midnight logo and renamed Wangan Midnight R to just “Midnight R”.

I can't wait to update my local copy of the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune location directory to show WMMT 5 in Southern and Northern California. (I'm a frequent poster on that website.)

Great documentary, very much information given! In my opinion you can be glad to get any arcade cabinets in the USA at all. A main reason for me to visit Japan every year is to play those awesome arcade games. In my home country arcades were never present at all :(

be happy, things that was good in 5 have been removed or modified in DX for example there is only three extreme maps now and also you all it is is backwoods but u see KMS etc.

Fast forward to January 12, 2022. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 5DX+ (now known simply as: Maximum tune 5DX+) eventualy released in North America and the changes are as followed: Both Honda NSX (NA1 and NC1) were portrayed by the Acura brand with the S2000 being the only Honda car in this version although it is unobtainable. The Toyota Soarer (Lexus SC) was removed from the North American version.

Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune was my arcade machine when I still had an arcade to go to. I was going to the arcade for MvC2 or Soul Calibur, but WMMT was the game i was actually semi-good at. I still have my old progress card (pink with the three ladies on it) somewhere in one of my old wallets.

Some other changes to MT5 NA when it was released: The logos when selecting BGM have been altered to remove Wangan Midnight from the name with Wangan Midnight R being simply renamed Midnight R. The Toyota Celsior (Lexus LS) and Toyota Aristo (Lexus GS) were removed from the North American version of 5 which has Gatchan Sasaki and Mrs. Sasaki's car being replaced with a Crown Athlete and Chaser tourer V respectively.

Been dying to play one of these

I've been playing MT5 for about one year now and. I've been addicted to it since. I just would love to get the 5DX upgrade for starters. So I can earn dress up parts for my Toyota 86. I've even wanted to do the same for the BMW M3. After seeing the new features like the Stamp Sheet. North America could use more love for MT5, including the game not being region locked.

Maxi 4 was so big in Australia and now 5DX+ is still going strong

Finally, Maximum Tune 5 is out for NA! But only on Round 1 amusement and bowling. And only a few locations of that place is available. So I have to drive about 160+ miles to dallas to play this game. Thanks, Bandi. FUCKING THANKS! Hopefully MT6 will be more around in the states.

tl;dr at the bottom of the comment. Wangan Midnight R adds a bonus feature where if you turn the wheel while starting the game you get the choices of all Character Cars instead of stock untuned cars , it has no limits unlike the PS2 version where Character's Car is restricted to only Devil Z & Blackbird. Other than that the game is pretty much the same as the Wangan Midnight with minor optimization and bug fixes. Strangely enough the cabinets my arcades used to have an issue where whenever Rivals blows their engine, the game will start to stop loading chunks of the map ahead which cause invisible roads. Fun fact : Wangan Midnight R is still missing RUF cars but if you choose to play as Devil Z, in the final stage you'll still race Akio in his S30 but strangely Blackbird's /Tatsuya Shima's theme plays. Tl;dr : Wangan Midnight R is the same game as Wangan Midnight with playable Rival tuned cars.

Weird thing is, even if i'm in asia. I've never seen a wmmt4 cabinet in arcades, it just randomly skips from 3dx+ to 5dx

UK player here, first played the series with MT5 on teknoparrot, thought I'd drop in my opinions here. I honestly couldn't care less about dropping the wangan midnight from the title since the first three localised games had the Japanese logos, meaning the only english was "midnight maximum tune" which sounds a lot worse than just "maximum tune". Also over here the situation is even worse, we're still stuck on MT3 and even then most of those cabs are gone or have been replaced with dead heat. It sucks that Namco seems to have abandoned the US with MT6 and 6R but hey maybe something's going on that I don't know about. The video itself was really nice to watch and informative since I didn't actually know about the WMMT NAC beforehand.

In usa/canada version of wmmt, there is no wangan midnight in the title, the gear shifter and bana passport reader change places, the machine looks different than my country or asia, the update in usa/canada is late.

My Round1 had Maximum Tune 5 but it’s always packed and I could never play it. Fortunately for me, there was Maximum Tune 3DX+ at the far back of all of the cabinets and played that. I really enjoyed my time playing it. Now, I usually play the Tokyo Xtreme Racer games as they’re as close to Maximum Tune as you can get.

Minor nitpicking on how to pronounce Japanese. After its been romanized, you pronounce it as phrases of Constanent + Vowel combination. So Hakone would be Ha Ko Ne.

Dude, interesting story. Now I'm completely beyond to play this arcade series because this series brings me to my curiosity. Yes, I've played the first one when I was 9, and I sucked at it because arcade racing games are not my speciality to drive with a steering wheel, it was heavy for me. Now that I've aged, I can go out to arcade stores in Canada to play the availability of Maximum Tune cabinets. Glad to hear your story. But I have a question: Why Maximum Tune is not ported to home consoles?

What about Europe though? Any word on 5, 5DX or 5DX+ coming to European territories? We got fans across Europe too, who here lives in Europe and wishes to see WMMT 5 onwards in across the region?

BNAA dropped the Wangan Midnight name due to licensing reasons.

It took a LONG while but finally, we got our wangan back. It's just a shame that it's mostly restricted to R1s since D&B are jerking people around and the 3 locals in Canada.

We need to hack every Wangan with server off! Wangan 4 is playable on PC via Linux (because ES1) and with WMMT6, we'll hack WMMT5 ES3 to run on Windows. WMMT5 JAP ES3 is from 2014.

Well, in manga and anime, initial d is more famous than wangan midnight (since initial d has many seasons, ova, movie "both have movie version, but initial d movie is better than wangan midnight movie" and memes, while wangan only has movie and anime only) but in game version (mainly arcade), maximum tune beat initial d in all aspects (like story, feature, characters, online battle which is you can play other ghost player, ranking "from C9 to SSSS", multiplayer up to 4, cards, language, etc)
