This is what the internet was made for, not for all the social media narcissism and ranting that is worthless and teaches us nothing but division. I will make a real effort to sit with this instruction and make my life better!! Might even make another person feel good when I can put this on their ears. You are a positive force for the world. THANK YOU!!!

Great stuff. I love that you don't take the approach of a lot of teachers: "You can't do anything until you know everything!" This gets me started with some simple concepts that sound great. I can learn them in C and then after I have the hang of that go on to other keys, etc. Really helps to get me actually playing.
@5naxalotl
@5naxalotl 3 года назад
yep. cannot stand music theory guys who refuse to explain things in C. they're all like "today we're looking at tritone substitutions for secondary dominants, and i'll just assume everyone can follow along if i do this in A-flat"

Finally...I'm retired and have time to learn some Jazz and improv. I studied classical from 7yrs old and got pretty good, majoring in music at UCLA. Even toured with the long Beach State Symphony orchestra back in the day. The problem was while I could read and play just about anything on sheet music I never understood or learned how to do the cool jazz and improv stuff that people want to hear! So I am thrilled to find this site and I'll be signing up shortly!!! awesome site, thanks...:)

Smart, accessible, and friendly as usual. Especially that you help beginners, and intermediate players, avoid the complexities of chord scale theory. Also, this is what Barry Harris says " We didn't have time to think about all those scales ".

In this particular video, he hardly mentions right hand rhythm - he only mentions "coming up in triplets" at one point (playing 3 notes evenly within the space of 2 beats), but that's an occasional thing. Most of the time it's pairs. Anyone who's wondering why their solo doesn't sound like Jonny's... listen to how he swings the solos. He does play the triplets in a few places where they feel appropriate, but most of the time he pairs the notes and swings each pair slow-fast slow-fast slow-fast slow-fast instead of playing evenly spaced notes. His left hand is playing the Charleston rhythm that he showed how towards the beginning. He often doesn't swing the solos' notes when he shows them to us slowly, but it's there again when he speeds up and it sounds "right". So, make sure to feel that right hand swing, and give it a try. Also listen for when he pauses with a longer note or an empty space, get a feeling for when those and the triplets are due.

Johnny... just started.. I had skipped this earlier.. I am starting to feel and hear the approach notes much better. I am noticing that playing over the D-7 Left Hand with with Db D# is much better experience than just playing the notes themselves on the R.Hand. still working on it. I believe the first 2 approach notes up and down, according to the D7 chord are b9 #9. Could be wrong. .

I love this but have one question, I feel it will get old and repetitive quickly, is there a break out from this, maybe throw in some power chords occasionally ? What do you suggest ?
@SeanTheDiscoNinja
@SeanTheDiscoNinja 3 года назад
Power chords are not really in the style. A better option would be looking at things like quartal or quintal voicings, or looking at ideas like ‘root, shell, pretty’ (adding upper extensions or alterations of chords). Otherwise, block chords and drop voicings provide a great sound too. Smooth voice leading is the key to great sounding chords though. A quick search on youtube will give you all the information you need about all of these ideas.
