Hi dear fellow Musicians :) This playlist is a collection of NewJazz lessons that all show different approaches on how to play and improvise over the very same chord progression as used in the lesson above (a standard sequence of fifths in Emi): ru-vid.com/group/PLd8gNAxPUcJzqwqL21s9NExEKpk14bglb Enjoy :) Many regards from Oliver Prehn
People don't realize how much you are giving them in this lesson. I would like to donate and I will. As soon as I get some money I'll send you something because you are showing us more in one lesson then we could learn on our own in a lifetime, jazz is dying because we failed to share this great music and teach it two the young ones coming up behind vs. God bless the work of your hands.
@@NewJazz i subbed. but can you make a playlist series of videos from beginner to mid to advance. I honestly don't know which video to start at. like, if im in a certain level, which videos should I start with ect.
@@freeyoutube8298 Hi :) Each lesson can be seen individually and they are not meant for the purpose of being watched in a specific order. So the idea is that you just zap around and choose what interests you. But anyway, I made this playlist trying to sort the videos in a suggested order: ru-vid.com/group/PLd8gNAxPUcJw1DmmWooCWx_jgKzgBfYGp At the front page of the NewJazz channel ru-vid.com you also have other different entrances to the lessons. And on the “playlist tab” you’ll find even more categories/chunks of lessons: ru-vid.com/playlists Best regards from Oliver
@@freeyoutube8298 Oliver's videos are very interesting: they don't have an order, and you can just pick a random one to practice, and practice a lot of time! Once you practice about 4 to 5 videos or more, you will find they all connect together. Well, you can even pick a video, and only practice the easy parts of the video.
Oliver, your teaching has enabled me to start soloing. I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for not baiting your lessons with pay to unlock the rest of the lesson. For this reason I will be donating to your amazing channel.
Clearly not only an exceptional and passionate musician but also a very humble and extremely generous kind person in sharing to the world and bringing joy and knowledge to many. Thank you Oliver.
It doesn’t need to be “on the beat”.. it needs to swing. That’s something you do excellently. Your dynamic control is top top. I have yet to hear you make a mistake, so you not only have a nice touch but you’re very precise. Good pocket
Im a bassist but this video is so good. Not only teaches 51 good licks in the standart jazz progressions but it actually tells me what you are doing when you are doing it. I knew some blues, arpeggios and chromatic licks but I didn't know how to mix and match them to create the mood and emotions I aimed for, it helped me so much I will have to study that triad hand grip later with my bass to see how it applies but I guess I will just adapt it as a extended triad (octave 5th) with a 2nd or a 9th and make some cool phrases, the stacked fifths sound just great
Man, you literally blew my mind with how clear cut and concise this 20 minute video was. Explaining basic and complex jazz playing in individual steps. Awesome 👏🏽
This is just what I want. Thankyou. More please. The notation and the music demonstrating it. It's the fastest way to learn new material. People who don't develop reading skills have to rely on their ears and memory. That has it's advantages but sharing music with others can be limited in a studio situation with new material that's cleverly arranged.
Thank you sooooo much, Oliver. Each of your lessons are demystifying the improvising process. Your graphics, timing markers and slowing the levels down are tremendous! Yes, yes, I adore the slow motion. I realize speed will happen as I get things under my fingers. So, very glad that you have the time now to let your musical and teaching genius shine. Someone else can drive the bus. Keep playing the music, Mr Oliver!
I’ve been watching his vids on and off as a guitarist trying to understand jazz and it’s the clearest explanation and demonstration I’ve seen. Thank you so much Oliver.
I'm a guitarist (who also plays piano) trying to understand Jazz too but finds it too hard so plays more and more piano instead after watching this fellow's videos. Jazz Blues Piano Rules!
Maaaaan, I've never ever seen a better lesson... I love guys like Rick Beato, Jens Larsen, Scott Devine and others, but this was very best... Although, I primarily play other instruments, this lesson made me want to play piano again as well! Total subscribe!
Gracias!
Incredible teaching! Gave me a better understanding how jazz is played more than just theory and books! Deeper insight for me! Now I know why and how jazz players always play so beautifully!
Dear Oliver.. You are so kind, so nice.. You play so soulfuly and your sentences are so intelligent. Please keep playing and bring so much joy to us all.
The only bad thing about this video is the title. It doesn’t do justice to the ground it covers. I learn so much from this video! A real gem for jazz beginner. The key is, i may not be able to do it now, but now i have a much better idea of the path to do jazz piano. One example, i know what a blue scale is but i never know it can be applied in such simple manner. Thank you for putting things into context in only 20 minutes!
Wonderfully perfect class, I love your teaching, and I dream of being able to play like this one day, thanks you Oliver for providing me with this amazing class, my congratulations for making your knowledge available with so much love and dedication
You've done a really great job here Oliver; I've been a jazz lover for 1/2 a century but never had the opportunity to see the detail of what performers play, so thank you for showing me.
Inspirational instruction video. I am not a musician, though I have owned a Baldwin baby grand piano for twenty-five years. I have tried lessons for a few years but never felt I progressed like I wanted to (lack of practices as nothing to do with it ;)) Music warms my soul and I have the greatest respect to those that have the talent and ability to play. I happened to play one of your videos and was immediately captivated by your presentation style and relaxing voice. Watching this video has sparked my love of music and prompted me to revisit the piano. I really like the slow motion playback to reinforce the lessons. Thank you so much Oliver!
I play flute and tenor sax but I keep a keyboard around as a tool for understanding the theory of it all. As a melody player I am learning those arpeggios. What I found most useful from this was the various ways to use chord tones or the chromatic. Good stuff for understanding how to play the changes. The keyboard lets you see it so clearly. Thanks Oliver!
Thank you ! Your are a very great contributor. I will use your advices for saxophone. Your comment is so encouraging. You are in the team of whom that give more than lesson.
Brilliant lesson Oliver ! Your best New Jazz production yet. Mixing arpeggios with blues, triad and chromatic licks is where learners struggle to decipher what is happening, so the colour coding is an ingenious idea. Although RU-vid allows users to slow videos down (or speed up!), your "intentional" slow motion explanations, as part of the lesson, are invaluable and essential for me at least.
in fact, the slow-motion is very, very useful for people like me, who are learning by listening and repeating, what I´m seeing on the screen. Fantastic idea !
This lesson came just right in time, to relax and learn from, a needed brake in these times when there is talk about the corona virus almost 24/7! Tack så mycket! Levi i Jönköping, sverige
Tack sa mycket. I have very fond memories of Sweden. One of the most civilized and advanced nations on this earth. Music connects us. Cheers from Victoria , Australia. In lock down for the virus, and using the time for piano.
Thx Oliver. I'm still years behind to be able to apply for this lesson, if not decades. Nevertheless, your lesson allows me also to read and hear answers to a thousand questions I am wondering, every day in my learning progression. So, congrats and thx again for your very pedagogic approach. Many thx Oliver.
Oliver Prehn Master (University) in Music & Multimedia - and bus driver!!! I really enjoy the ride! Thanks for sharing. Full speed, half speed. It's a technique I employ in my teaching, too. Love that you perfectly demonstrated it.
This is my first time seeing your video. I wish you were in NYC! You are truly a master at teaching and helping one understand how to read what's written out. I'm sure to visit you again Oliver! Thanks.
Hi Oliver, while lockout at our Condo here in BGC Philippines because of c19 virus I can now practice my favorite piano jazz licks that I Learned from you. Lots to choose in UR 51 cool Jazz licks. I started in 8:45 Level 4 and 15:35 Level 7 Ur licks sounded like AUTUMN LEAVES. God bless you YESHUA loves you
Love the way you swing, you can really tell the difference. Thank you so much Oliver for all the great information on your channel, best regards from Argentina!
Super usefull the slowdown with thrcolir videos! Thank you! I am a 49 years old jazzguitarist, but started to learn piano and I enjoy your lessons and explanations!
Você é MUITO EXCELENTE E HUMILDE! PARABÉNS... Nunca vi algo parecido... Extremamente inteligente e educado. Continue assim e OBRIGADO por compartilhar um conhecimento tão PODEROSO com a gente!
As a self medicating Piano Player, Honestly, Your videos have provided the best instructions for me. The hand grip introduced me to Jazz and now this has really provided me with yet tonnes of material to add to my toolbox and a real Golden touch thats easy to mix in several styles of music. thank you sooo much for sharing.
Exactly! Without warts, there's no groove. To paraphrase Little Feat "Music's the perfect imperfection." Hat tip to New Jazz for these wonderful videos.
Its great to have a manual job and meeting people ,nice and sadly sometimes not so nice.to help express the colours of jazz from sweet to sour.I played for a long time but got fed up being a sheet music slave all the time for songs but jazz improv is freedom.thanx
This has been of great help! Speaking from someone who does not necessarily play the piano but rather blues and jazz on guitar and violin, this is packed with information. Thank you for this
I love this. It's really a good way to teach. I like the fact that you have the chart, and the colors describing what you are doing, both on the chart and the keyboard ... An I especially love the slow motion because there would be no way I could get it in real time and if it weren't for slow motion all the rest of the cool stuff, including the licks themselves would be lost... at least on me. Thanks very much for all of this and your time to put it up on youtube. ✌
Brilliant lesson, Oliver! Really smart of you to show us some jazz lines being born on the simple side of the spectrum. Really helps me get my ear around some of the new sounds. Also really appreciate the chords and notation clues you drop in, so we can match the theory with the sounds. Also, fair warning, I'm stealing some of these lines for my guitar playing :) Keep up the awesome work, man. Appreciate you!
Fabulous. I like the slow motion feature very much, but most of all is how understandable it all is, and it involves techniques I know I have heard before. I like that it is a collection of tools to use sparingly. Very valuable.
Thank you so much Oliver, you are one of the best jazz and blues pianist in the world, congrats! I play piano jazz with my master since 3 years, because my greatest dream is to go to play in a pub in Milan, Italy, so I will be like a master, on June 2024, when I will be 29 years old. I play my keyboard 1 hour and 30 minutes a day, and my teacher is proud of me. Good music, Oliver!🎹😁
Hello Oliver, I've just traslated the subtitle in italian. Just a way to say thank you. The answer to your question is YES, slow motion is very useful. It is very difficult to find on line tutorials about fingering.
Thank you so much for your hard work :) :) :) Your subtitles are now approved and published. And thanks for your input on the slow motion feature. I'm so glad that you can use it!!! Many warm regards from Oliver
Very good lesson, Oliver! And thank you. Had a question about level 6 triads, but think I may have found a link to look at from someone else’s comment? Will check they out first.
Great :) This playlist contains lessons that all elaborate the techniques in use: ru-vid.com/group/PLd8gNAxPUcJzqwqL21s9NExEKpk14bglb And in the playlist we have this specific lesson explaining more about the triads: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dY5m3Qe9-_Q.html Warm regards from Oliver
SLOW MOTION - 🐢🐢🐢 - I think this is the best way to study and learn to play an instrument, paying close attention to each bar - I hope that other people who are truly interested in learning to play like you, understand and appreciate your work and this type of videos. Oliver you are a genious 🤜🤛
I would just like to thank you so much for your videos. I never thought that I would take to jazz but your method and style of playing really captivate me. Words fail me to express how much I love this particular video. I am 78 years old and have been learning the piano for the past 2 years and haven’t been getting anywhere until now. So thanks so much again and I will be happy to contribute to you. You make learning and playing comfortable with your laid back approach, and playing at half speed, which gives me time to take notes and play in my own time.
Thank you so much. And you don’t have to contribute anything. A really nice comment like yours is all the support I need :) Many warm regards from Oliver
It's your imperfections that makes NEW JAZZ uniquely unmistakably yours. That is part of the genius in your playing. You are human and not machine. Thanks again Teacher Oliver.
Hi and thanks :) Yes, this video explains the triad technique further and where to place the triads: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dY5m3Qe9-_Q.html
I have been trying to learn jazz guitar. This lesson has shown me more interesting and *useful* approaches than the several jazz guitar channels I have visited. Like most guitarists, I can not read sheet music with much fluency, however, no matter, I will pick out the melodies by ear, using your slow versions. Many thanks!
So clear, with brillience in your teaching technique. You need to be in every school on the planet. I used to dream of being able to understand what you have shown me just now in this short lesson in knowledge. Will try to be cool, just like you suggested. You have renewed a love for the crazy piano. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much!!! If you wanna make a small donation to support my work you can do it here: www.newjazz.dk/donations.html But you certainly don't have to - a nice message like yours is all the support I need :) Warm regards from Oliver
FYI I regard these as excellent lessons and donate each time I download to complete my study......good value when you have no tutor at home. Terrific value for money.
