I have six siamese algae eaters in a 75-gallon community tank. The only fish I've ever seen them harass is each other. My favorite part of their behavior is that they like to perch on the hardscape, often in groups. I've had many instances of seeing four of them chilling on the same rock. 😅

You were talking about geophagus but my electric blue acaras also do the same. My angelfish alway go around the plant bases or just below the sponge filter and eat if there's anything there with their pointed mouth . I've never faced algae issues in any of my tanks . Some people says black mollies eat algea but they only eat if they're kept starved , with food available they don't do much with algae . BTW good list with lots of information for future reference.

People often confuse Siamese algae eaters with Chinese algae eaters. Chinese algae eaters are the ones that are a total nuisance. Siamese algae eaters are peaceful and won’t mess with your other fish… BUT yes they do tend to fight each other quite a bit

Look! About the SAE fish... I had one and it was harassing the Celestial Pearl Danios non stop. I had to give it away because the CPDs were not eating anymore. He was even harassing a grey shark twice his size. And it was fed with shrimp and algae wafers.
@PlainsPup
@PlainsPup 6 месяцев назад
I think the confusion over the Siamese algae eater (Crossocheilus oblongus) stems from its resemblance to the distantly related Chinese algae eater (Gyrinocheilus aymonieri). SAEs are smaller, calmer, and shoaling. In contrast, CAEs are bigger, semi-aggressive, and territorial.

I love ‘em though and they crack me up they got my Ottos to feel more comfortable and come out so much now(before I thought they all die and I couldn’t find them). I have a deep sub planted sand tank and the snails were out of control. I had 3 small bishirs in there and after the rest of the fish disappeared (1st time bisher keeper) I noticed fewer and fewer snails. The bishirs love to roll baby snails around in their mouth, suck the meat out, and spit out the shells. Those monster fish are 7-8 inches now and the tank and snails are all theirs.

@KGTropicals. This may be my anxiety talking again but if you keep fish with shrimp and a few shrimplets get picked off how much harder is it to determine how much to feed your fish? I'm just curious I've seen Mark from MD fish tanks do some great shrimp tanks i'm sure I could manage.

I have never seen SAE be aggressive to other fish. I have kept them with various fish for over 40+ years. The fish that look like SAE are Chinese algea eaters. They are meaner than stink. Before I learned how to tell them apart, I found them the hard way. Read up on the differences between SAE and CAE

I think the debate over the Siamese Algae Eater comes from people confusing it with the Flying Fox fish, which IS a feisty little beggar. Whereas the Algae Eaters are very sociable and barely squabble at all. In fact, when I had five together in a tank they used to lie all over each other in a cute fishy pile. I have found, as well, that they aren't very happy unless they have at least ONE companion. When I've had them alone they hide all the time. In groups they can become so confident that they'll come to the surface to eat out of your fingers, and they come to the front of the tank and flap their fins in excitement when they see you. (Presumably because they think that there's food coming, and boy do they love their food!)

I never had problems with SAE, except: 1. They demolish Java moss: So no Java moss unless you have high tech, CO_2 _may_ save it. 2. If 1 SAE gets skittish, other learn it. I had few SAE in a smaller tank, carefully I caught them, put into a larger tank and suddenly they became very skittish. Later I bought another group to have more SAE. I should have at least 7 SAE in that tank, but they barely come out when I'm near the tank. Like a collective trauma. It's not the lights, it's not the other fish or the shoal being too small. 3. SAE are hard to catch, they are fast and they can jump far. 4. They are related to Rainbow Shark Minnow and similar barbs, which are notorious in their relation with their "cousins", SAE included. They can be kept together, but they aren't exactly friendly. I wonder if the aggressiveness issue other mention comes from different species (there are some similar fish). SAE have narrow black strip which goes all the way in the fin (I think there's other barb with strip ending before the tail fin), but I wouldn't be surprised if some localities had less timid fish unless those imported to Europe. AFAIK nobody breeds them in Europe, because it's way cheaper to breed (catch?) them in Asia where the fish breed during the Monsoon season. It can be done with hormones, but a hobbyist may easily end with hundreds of baby SAE that way. Overall I love SAE (not on a plate as they think), they grow about 6" in length, live over 10 years if they are lucky, pretty easy to keep and they can help combat algae when they are young or hungry.

Hi! I figured I’d comment on the most recent one so you’d be more likely to see it, but I have a question. For background, I’ve kept a small 5 gallon tank before but it’s been a few years and I’m getting a 10 gallon this time. I know the basics of cleaning and water tests but found my old test kits (ph and ammonia droppers and then the 5 in 1 test strips). Since it’s been so long, my old test kits are now expired by about two years for most of them. I did get new ones but haven’t got EVERYTHING yet. I was wondering if the expired ones would still be accurate enough? I’ve only found one video and it was for liquid ammonia tests, but what about the strips? If you or anyone in the comments who knows could help, that would be awesome since I’m kind of on a budget and don’t want to buy new 40 dollar kits yet if I can wait. Thank you!

There isn’t much algae growth in my tank and I dose CO2 for the plants and have about 10 hours of daylight. Anyone have advice on getting my sweet snails to leave my plants alone 😭
@jmtlpt
@jmtlpt 8 месяцев назад
Mystery snails usually don't eat healthy leaves. They tend to only eat dying leaves. I have dozens in multiple planted tanks and don't have an issue. If they are eating good leaves then there must not be enough food for them. If there's no algae to graze try a cut up cucumber or zucchini squash. Slice them up and blanch them in boiling water so they sink. Let them cool of course. I do that about once a week. They love it. You'll see a pile of snails all over them within 30 minutes. You can also try other sinking foods, rapashy gel, etc. Mine eat sinking pellets that I feed my Cory cats as well as the algae wafers. I'd step up the amount of algae wafers as well. 1 per 5 snails seems low. Double it at least.
